Optics and Resolution

S230's nine-point autofocus lets you sharpen the image on your subject, no matter where it is in the frame.

Featuring a 3.2-megapixel CCD sensor, the PowerShot S230 delivers a wide range of detail and color (with images up to 2048 x 1536 pixels) and prints up to 11 by 14 inches. Canon's high-quality 2x optical zoom lens allows you to close in on the action, while the 3.2x digital zoom allows for a combined 6.4x zoom, letting you capture intimate details that might have been missed with another camera. The PowerShot S230 is also one of the few digital cameras to feature wide-area nine-point autofocus for taking crisp, sharp images no matter where the subject appears in the image frame.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash memory cards, and a 16 MB card is included. When shooting images at the medium or fine setting, the 16 MB card will store approximately 26 images. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB storage-class connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the S230 can also record movie clips of up to 3 minutes. You can choose from three different video formats: 160 x 120, 320 x 240, or 640 x 480 pixels. Both picture and sound quality have been improved, and an editing feature allows you to delete unwanted scenes during playback. The S230's photo-effect mode lets you do more with your still images. Choose from low sharpening, vivid color, sepia, neutral, and black and white.

A Must Have for long films and high volumes of photographs.
I will begin by saying I cannot believe the poor quality of the previous reviews, simply atrocious.On to what I hope will be helpful to others.

If you have a Canon Powershot, chances are you will be fine just using the battery.I bought a second battery so that I don't have to worry about running out of power while I'm shooting photographs.

In contrast, I purchased the ACK-500 for my S410 so that I can shoot long films and a high volume of photos without wasting the battery.It is important to realize that the Canon NB-1LH battery has 400-500 charge/discharge cycles (third-party batteries have even fewer).

For most people the number of cycles isn't a big deal.But say you want to shoot 6 hours of film in a single location or you are shooting a ton of flash photos from a single location - doing all this using batteries would become tedious and you'd quickly use up your battery's effective life.With the AC Adapter Kit you can go indefintely, as long as you're connected to a power source of some sort.

The kit comes with a little rectangle that looks like the battery but feels lighter.You put it in the same spot as the battery, then you plug in the AC adapter and run the power cable to the faux-battery (that's what the rubber cover on the battery slot is all about).Setup is a piece of cake and it works exactly as advertised.

The kit is great for some people; I would suggest you buy your camera and use it for awhile.Try to think about how you use the camera and what you want to use it for and then make your purchase.

Comprei a camera s-230 , uma bateria adicional , uma memoria de 128M , uma leitora de CF , alem do adaptador AC .
Só utilizei uma vez o adaptador AC , pois a bateria de boa duração . Para utilizar o adaptador AC , a bateria deve ser retirada da camera e no seu lugar é introduzida uma bateria falsa que contem o terminal externo , no qual é conectado o adaptador ACK-500.

Small, light weight and easy to use
This small digital camera is very easy to use and is small enough to fit into a pocket or purse.The owner's manual is clear and the displays are well-designed.If you haven't used the camera for a while, or only skimmed the manual, you can figure out the basic controls fairly well.

The LCD screen is a nice size and gives a clear sharp picture.

It takes approximately 2 hours to charge the battery.

Never had any problems
I have several of these, and I've never had any problems with any of them.I've used them in my Canon camera and my Nex1a MP3 player; both work fine, and are interchangeable.

FOR NOW BETTER THAN OTHERS FOR COOLPIX 3100
I HAVE A NIKON COOLPIX 3100 WHICH IS QUITE SLOWWRITING PICTURES TO THE COMPACT FLASH (CF) CARD, LEADING TOA CONSIDERABLE DELAY FOR THE NEXT SHOT.
BEFORE THIS VIKING I OFTEN USED OTHER BRANDS OF 256 MBCF CARDS : LEXAR 12X ANDSIMPLE TECH AND SOMETIMES 64MB SAN DISK CF CARD .
A RELATIVE MADE ME A GIFT AND IN FACT I WAS ONLY THINKING TO USE IT AS A STEP CARD FOR BACK UPS,
IREALLY BECAMESURPRISED.
I HAD ITONLY FOR A SHORT TIME, BUTTIME ENOUGH TO BE CONVINCED THAT FORMY NIKON COOLPIX 3100 SEENS TO BE PRETTY FASTER THAN OTHERS IN WRITING IMAGES.

Great card, but slow write speed
I've been using this card with my Canon S400 for the past 9 months and am very pleased with it.However, about a month ago, I noticed that the write speed increased from about a second to three-four seconds per image.It's kind of annoying since it was so quick before, but other than that, the card has served me well!

Good value, but watch out for compatibility
Unlike Lexar or Sandisk, Viking does not design or make the components that go into their flash memory cards, instead they use off-the-shelf components (controller and memory core) made by others.This means two things: 1) lower cost (to Viking), and 2) compatibility with devices may not be as robust as Lexar or Sandisk.There have been numerous reports about incompatibility between Viking flash memory and various digital cameras and PDAs.You should do a web search before buying this product.

That said, this Viking CF card should work in most digital cameras or older Pocket PCs that take CF.The rated speed of 8x means this is not suitable for digital SLR's such as the Nikon D70 or Canon EOS Digital Rebel which need higher-speed CF cards (40x or higher).Most consumer, non-SLR digital cameras will find the speed of this card more than adequate.128MB holds about 80-100 5MP, high-quality pictures (depending on the complexity of each picture and the particular camera model).I personally recommend if you have a 4MP or more camera, you should have a 256MB memory card as your primary card, while carrying a 128MB card like this Viking as a spare.

In short, this Viking 128MB CF card is good for the money.Just make sure it's compatible with your digital camera.
