Sony DSCF717 5MP Digital Still Camera w/ 5x Optical Zoom

    Editorial Review

It takes two hands to hold Sony's new DSC-F717, which you'll need to use all the many features packed into this digital camera. The F717 captures images at up to 5.2-megapixel resolution--2,560 by 1,920 pixels--which allows for prints of 11 by 14 inches or even greater.

Images are crisp, colorful, and deep with detail. With USB 2.0 support, transfers to the PC zipped by and can be set to dispatch automatically. The large, autofocus Carl Zeiss lens zooms optically at 5x, with another 2x in digital mode. Atop the lens, the automatic flash pops open when needed. It also performs preflash metering and corrects the amount of light sent to create shots with the best possible exposure.

This aids the NightFraming mode, which incorporates the camera's NightShot infrared technology, and can help with taking optimal shots in low-light or no-light situations. If you've never used an infrared viewer before, you'll be impressed by the additional photo opportunities it provides, like snapping shots of teenagers stealing your jack-o'-lanterns and catching them orange-handed.

NightShot can also be used with the camera's movie-capturing mode. The audiovisual movies can be played back full screen with the HQX mode; we played our movie at 1,280 x 1,024 and could only find minor pixilation around the edges.

Video size is limited only by the capacity of the Sony Memory Stick inside the camera. The F717 ships with a 32 MB stick, so an upgrade to a larger size is recommended. It comes with a shoulder strap, but we also recommend buying a case to protect your investment. Not a camera for beginners, the F717 does everything you'd expect from a high-end digital camera. --J. Curtis

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Update to the F707
We've had the Sony DSC-F707 for over a year and love it. I had a chance recently to test drive the newer F717 and was suitably impressed. The features and use are nearly identical to the 707, as is the performance. One difference is price - the 717 reatils for $100 less than our 707 did. And, if you shop around, you can easily get a free 128 MB memory stick thrown in, maybe a case too.

On the test stand, the two cameras measured virtually identically. That's a tribute to the dependability and quality, considering the thousands of images I've acquired with the 707, in a wide variety of demanding conditions, such as high altitude winter mountain photography and hot, dusty shoots in the desert. This camera makes the A list for consumer digital cameras and if you can afford it, you'll be a happy camper. One of the major challenges in consumer digital is the optics and the 5x optical zoom Zeiss optics are excellent. The electronics of the 717 seem a tiny bit faster than on our 707, but both have less lag than most 5 MB models I've compared (over 30 onto the test bench in the last 3 months). This baby is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 megapixels and easy to use
I've spent a good deal of time with my 3.2 megapixel Olympus and thought that it was a pretty good camera. That is until I bought the Sony F717. The good things...Looong battery life with fairly quick charging..... accurate autofocus, even at macro setttings...controls/menus are obvious, you don't even need the manual to figure most of it out...fast cycling...great through the lens or screen readouts and framing, a focus ring that feels like the thing is on a real camera...intuitive location of controls, after ~15 minutes of fooling with it I could shoot and never take my eyes off of the viewfinder despite changing aperture, speed, flash, macro etc frequently.

The bad things...the manual is a great quick get-started guide but lacks the detail I'd like in a camera with this much potential that costs this much. The software that comes with the camera is not great, but if you spend this much on a camera you ought to use Photoshop or PictureIt any way.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT
IM NOT A PHOTOGRAPHER BY NO MEANS. BUT I LIKE TO HAVE A CAMERA AROUND TO TAKE PICTURES WHENEVER I CAN EITHER OF MY BOYS OR BEFORE AND AFTERS OF PROJECTS AT THE HOUSE. I ACTUALLY GOT A CARRYING CASE FOR IT AND ACC. I TAKE IT EVERYWHERE I GO. ALSO GOT A PRINTER TO GO WITH IT. WHAT WONDERFUL PICTURE THAT I CAN TAKE. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you have an HDTV, you need this camcorder!!!!
This is the first camcorder I have ever used that looks good on an HDTV. No... Let me correct that. It looks great!!!

Have you ever wondered why a normal camcorder looks so bad on an HDTV? It's because an HDTV is very high resolution. When you connect a traditional camcorder (even a Mini DV), the TV sees a much smaller, comparatively low resolution picture and must scale it (digitally enlarge it) to fit the screen. It doesn't matter if you have a $400 low end cam or a $4000 high end cam... Scaling the picture on virtually any HDTV will ruin your camcorder picture.

JVC solved this on the GR-HD1 with the world's first consumer HD camcorder. Basically, it's the first consumer camcorder ever that makes a picture which correctly fits a widescreen HDTV. It records a picture with 720 x 1280 dots, compared with 480 x 720 dots for a normal camcorder.

The result? The detail & resolution is simply phennominal! The colors look great! The video is much more appealing to watch in widescreen because it more closely matches your natural field of vision.

The only thing you need to be careful of is the frame rate. This shoots 720/30P. What that means is it takes video at 30 frames per second. As a result, if the camera uses too fast of a shutter speed you may see a "jitter" in things that move on-screen. The fix is really easy: Simply take the camcorder out of the "auto" mode and lock in a 1/30th of a second shutter speed. This eliminates the vast majority of the jitter. What you are left with is a superb high resolution video with a subtle "film-like" quality.

You don't have to be Stephen Speilberg to appreciate this. This is the ideal camcorder for any type of family video. Think about the great stuff happening today that you'll want to be able to watch 10-20 years from now, and still be happy with the quality.

If you own an HDTV, no other camcorder else even comes close! ... Read more

Panasonic DMR-E80H Progressive-Scan DVD Player/Recorder with Hard Drive (Silver)

    Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: May 2003. This is the first DVD player with a built-in hard drive recorder, allowing you to record all your favorite shows onto digital disk as well as watch DVDs.

Talk about "all in one"--the Panasonic DMR-E80HS not only records DVDs and stores more than 100 hours of audio/video programming on its built-in memory; it's also a progressive-scan DVD player (for use with high-definition or HD-ready TVs) that also handles your DVDs, CDs, and MP3 recordable discs. With the DMR-E80HS's 80 GB hard drive, it provides up to 104 hours of recording time, plus up to 6 hours on a removable 4.7 GB DVD-RAM disc (in Extended Play mode in each case). The DMR-E80HS offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as DVD-R, widely regarded as the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats (great for sharing camcorder footage with loved ones).

Panasonic's Time Slip feature lets you use your DVD recorder like a personal video recorder, or PVR. Because of DVD-RAM's extremely fast transfer rate, you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the program in progress. In addition to recording new video content, the DMR-E80HS lets you transfer your favorite VHS recordings to durable, space-saving discs. Personal movie libraries and family videos can be archived, preserved, and easily cataloged and accessed. Picture-enhancing technologies include 3D noise reduction, block noise reduction, and mosquito noise reduction.

With the Direct Navigator you can instantly access recorded material from an onscreen menu that lists recording dates, times, channels, and titles. Finding and viewing recorded material is simple because there's no need to search, fast-forward, or rewind. You can even perform simple non-linear video editing, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, and creating custom playlists of favorite scenes on a disc. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product.
This is a great electronic component. The recorded picture quality utilizing the SP mode is excellent. The XP mode is even better, with virtually no difference from the original source. I have not found the need for recording in the XP mode since the SP mode is superior, but it's there for anyone who may require it. Just remember, you get approximately 1 hour of recording time in the XP mode as compared to approximately 2 hours in the SP mode.

If you are recording movies from your satellite (or cable), this unit is capable of editing out commercials or any other unwanted up-front and rear "garbage" that gets recorded before and after each recording. Just record to the hard drive, edit, then dub to DVR -R and your done. In addition, the DVD -R recording you just made can be copied over as many times as needed just by hooking up a second DVD player to the inputs.

One reviewer below mentioned "You cannot copy a DVD, copy protected or not, to the hard drive unless it is a DVD-RAM disk." Well he is just plain WRONG. In fact, not only can you copy a DVD -R to the hard drive, you can also copy it to another blank DVD -R and utilize the flexible recording mode to get the best possible (highest quality recording). I have done it and have tested the recording in the three other DVD Players I own. Each one is a different manufacturer: Sony, JVC, Samsung.

This unit is not TIVO. It's much better. You cannot edit out "stuff" with TIVO and you cannot make a DVD with TIVO.

Look at the consumers report on this unit. It is ranked #2 (right behind the Panasonic dmr-e100h model) in the DVR/DVD Recorder Combo Category. It received an excellent rating for Hard Drive/DVD recorders and these guys are the experts. According to their 12/3/2004 report on DVD Recorders, this unit scored excellent in DVD Playback Picture Quality, Recording Picture Quality and DVD Playback Ease Of Use. Very good in all others categories. If you are looking quality playback, recordings, sound, etc... in a recording unit, look no further.

I have recorded approximately 70 movies with this unit, with only one failure due to a bad DVD disc. I have used a number of different DVD disc. Sony, Panasonic, Memorex, TDK and Maxell disc. All work fine, so just pick the least expensive. My preference are the Sony & Panasonic brands. You can tell the difference in the quality workmanship. The manufacturer recommends using Panasonic disc. But of course, they would.

5-0 out of 5 stars why 5 stars?
We bought the Panasonic DVD recorder three months ago; we still haven't pressed all of the buttons on the remote. And it still functions beyond our expectations. We wanted to save old VHS programs and we wanted to time-shift television programs to watch later (a VCR). Perhaps very little to expect from a device that costs $500 but over twenty years ago we paid $1000 for a Mitsubishi top-loading, two-head VCR. Enough history.

It took almost three hours to hook up to a VCR, a Sony receiver, another DVD player, two TVs and the digital cable box. But when it was turned on, it was fantastic. We used the hard disc drive immediately. Playback was broadcast quality. We dubbed from the VHS to DVD-R; the quality actually improved. We recorded a test DVD-R disc from a commercial DVD and VHS and those both played back flawlessly. The big test came when we recorded a TV program onto DVD-R for a friend who didn't have the cable channel. Her old Sony player played it.

The instruction book is intimidating; read what you need and just keep the book handy. The prompt screens are somewhat intuitive. The most important buttons (after three months of use) are the 'Functions,' the 'Enter,' the four arrow buttons and the stop-pause-play buttons. We expect to learn more the longer we use the recorder.

The Panasonic recorder (with Hard Drive) is an excellent piece of electronic equipment. Well worth the price and deserving 5-stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unit dead after 6 months
After 6 months of using this unit it went completely dead. I took it to an authorized Panasonic repair service center several weeks ago. The service center told me that the needed part, a circuit board, was backordered from Panasonic. The service center also told me that 3 different promise shipment dates for the needed part were not met by Panasonic and there was little they could do. So today, I am still without any idea when the unit will be repaired. I would avoid this unit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like driving BMW
Like it or not, I've used Windows/PC for the past 12 years. Macintosh occasionally appealed to me, but I didn't get it partly because it's expensive, partly because of compatibility. At work and at home, I owned: Dell Inspiron, Thinkpad, Dell/HP Desktops, running Windows 98/2000/XP. Also I tinkered with Sun workstations running UNIX (I'm an EE guy and have a respect for UNIX).
After 12 years of Microsoft (and blue screens), I made a bold switch to Apple Powerbook 15" with 1.5GHz/512RAM/80Gb, and I'm so happy with this system that even 5 stars are not high enough.

    - The sleek aluminum chassis and the wide screen generate Wow! effect.
    - This 15" machine is lighter than my old Dell laptop.
    - It's very quiet during operation, but the bottom side may occasionally become hot.
    - The keyboard has a good depth and touch, and the backlit keyboard is simply cool.
    - Using the built-in microphone, you can play the bundled 3-D chess game via OS X's voice-recognition. Isn't that futuristic?

About software compatibility (from EE guy's viewpoint):
    - MS Office 2004 for Mac became my favorite patch of programs. Even better than the XP version - a very important factor in my decision to switch.
    - Math tools, especially Mathematica 5 and Matlab, run well on Mac.
    - Favorite design tools, Adobe Photoshop and Carrara 3, work well. After all, Mac was built for them.

    - There are tons of open source programs you can use: GIMP, A/G BLAST, ...
    - Some layout and CAD tools are not compatible. I have to use old PC. For those number-crunching jobs, however, I don't use laptop anyhow.

As much as I enjoy steering this elegant silver machine, I love to navigate through the Mac OS X. As Sun's Bill Joy said during an interview, "Mac OS X is rock solid". I like the idea of using UNIX commands on my Mac, although I can do everything with the user-friendly Mac interface.

Yes, Powerbook is more expensive compared with Dell and other PCs, but you get what you pay for: top-quality components, futuristic functionality, eye-catching design, and the enormous joy of owning a rock-solid elegant machine (like BMW!). You'll definitely like this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars concerning double-memory promotion
    Hi,

If you are considering to purchase this PB because of Amazon.com's recent (as of 6/29/04) free double-memory promotion. Be aware! This configuration of PB comes with two DIMM slots already filled with two 256MB modules, and there is no open slot left. So, even if you get another 512MB memory module for free, in order for you to add it, you will need to remove one of those pre-installed 256 MB modules. So, that means instead of having 1 GB memory that you are dreaming about, you will only be able to upgrade it to 768 MB, which is not bad. In fact, that is how much I have for my iMac at home running OS X 10.3 Panther. In the end, you will have an extra 256 MB module.

Anyway, I just wanted to bring this to your attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy customer
I have to say I am glad I waited for this generation of the G4 powerbook. It has been said in reviews that the most significant new feature of this laptop is it's lack of problem exhibited in many of the previous generations of the g4 powerbook. I must agree. The powerbook is very refined and the technology is perfectly combined with the operating system. It does everything with grace.

BTW, I reccomend the Appld bluetooth mouse and keyboard. They are an flawless pair.

I am very hard to please and don't write such positive things often. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Editing Very Good Output
I've used Adobe Premiere in the past, excellent but too expensive, I tried Ulead what a horrible experience, pinnacle reviews said crash after crash. Based on the reputation of Video Vegas I gave this product a try and it is really excellent.

I've used it so far to create 2 online projects for work documenting team meetings and posting the video online. It's easy to work with different pieces of the timeline and then output them in an appropriate format like Windows Media 9.
Excellent integration with external codecs - quicktime, wmv, mpeg1 and 2, and real video. The only drawbacks I've found so far are no control over the output only fixed templates. For example if you wanted to fine tune the audio bit rate, SB will not let you do that. Oh well I guess it is an entry level package. Secondly, the outputted MPEG is a little bit halo prone. It's supposed to be main concept encoder, but since you are not allowed to tune it at all, there's no way to fix it.

Lastly the NTSC mpeg2 video it creates is actually non-compliant for DVD production, since it only supports mpeg audio. In the US you really should output either PCM or AC3 Stereo. Neither of those are an option. I've filed a bug against Sony, but they have not responded. If sony would allow a little more control over the output I would definitely give this package 5 stars.

First the pros: excellent stability, very easy to use capture, good editing capability, easy to generate output.
Cons: lack of control over output.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Editing, but buy another DVD authoring program.
I suppose that, considering the whole package, I shouldn't give Screenblast 5 stars, but the editing functions are that good. I've used other programs, but only Screenblast gives me the kind of precision editing I needed. And only Screenblast gives me truly professional-looking titling functions. After many frustrating hours trying to get Pinnacle to work, Screenblast was a pure joy from beginning to end.

The down side is that for DVD authoring, it provides a separate program, Sonic MyDVD. MyDVD worked once for me, and produced good results. But when I went back and wanted to make a second DVD from exactly the same project, MyDVD reported that my video files were incompatible. Looking at other people's comments, it's apparent that MyDVD is an albatross around the neck of Screenblast.

Just install the Screenblast portion of the software to do your editing and get a different product to do your DVD authoring. It's worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this if you want a "better" home movie.
Look, you want to make your home movies interesting to watch...right!? You want some flexibility in your video effects and transitions...right!? You want to score your clips to existing CD tracks...right!? You're not afraid of spending a few hours on your PC instead of using a cut/paste video editor...right!? Get Screenblast. This software is great for someone who is interested in quality video editing. Even if you're a beginner, the tutorials will walk you through every step. The only part I didn't like about the package, is the DVD authoring software from Sonic DVD (Not part of Screenblast). It's like working on Windows 98 with 32MB of RAM. Buy the cheaper version of Screenblast without My Sonic DVD and find something that let's you display more than five buttons per screen. Anyway, good luck and enjoy this crash-free, easy to use video editor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve Jobs wants you to be cool!
Apple's always at the top of their game - whatever game that is - and this top of the line iPod is no exception. Let's pause a moment for the analysis:

40 GB. That's roughly 40,000 megabytes. Using today's AAC or mp3 music encoding technology, a 72 minute album rarely consumes more than 80 megabytes - even at near-CD quality. What does that mean to you? Yeah, you did the math right - 500 albums. You could sit there and play music 24/7 for nearly a month without repeating. Or head down to your local club and be DJ for the night - just slip the iPod out of your pocket and plug into the sound system!

OK, so it'll hold all your music. But what the numbers don't tell you is that it holds your music in STYLE. About the size of a stack of 8 credit cards, and only a trifle heavier, this'll fit on your belt, in your sleeve, in your backpack's cellphone pocket, in your purse, or wherever else you want to put it with no hassle. The controls lock so jostling around doesn't accidently push buttons. And what cool buttons they are - the 'scrollwheel pad' and no-click touchbuttons make for an easy, fun and durable interface.

Also, the thing just looks darn cool - with its white front, silver back, and little backlit screen, it's got instant 'bling bling' credibility, day or night.

It comes with everything you need - belt clip, earbuds, dock to recharge the battery and transfer music over from your Firewire- or USB 2.0-equipped computer. But I'd recommend two additions: first, the optional FireWire cable makes this into a portable 40G hard drive, highly useful in today's information age. (I carry a copy of the human genome around on mine.) Second, ditch the included headphones and grab a pair of the Sony neodymium-magnet earbuds, model #MDR-EX70LP. They transform your iPod from merely great to INSANELY great.

Cool tunes to ya, my friend!

2-0 out of 5 stars Undeserved Hype: Why Not Someone Else (with Cheaper Prices)?
Ok. I'm going to keep this simple. The iPod is a very nice player with great features- but I really think there are much better alternatives. Lets compare the Dell DJ 20GB model and the 20GB iPod. 1st there is the $150 price difference favoring the Dell. Then there's compatibilty with the Windows WMA format, which allows nearly 2x the storage space for similar quality songs. Or Dell's 250% better battery life? Or Dell's built in voice recorder? I have both products and am much happier overall with the Dell. The 2 stars are based on camparison on other products. Here's some info:

    Dell- Pros
Cheaper, Better compression, More compatibilty, More battery life, Intuitive controls, Better data file tansfer, Durable
    Cons
Larger, Lacks docking station, lacks Alarm Clock feature

    iPod- Pros
Smaller, Better transfer software, Plays games?!?!?!
    Cons
Easily scartchable back surface,Expensive, Windows Problems, No WMA files

For ALL Windows users- "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell."

    Mac users, you gotta switch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome capability
I'm using windows XP with an adaptec fire wire card and the interface is perfect. Like anything computer, this too will require some initial tweaking on the user's part. On the advice of Apple's tech-support, I went through four different fire wire cards before determining on my own that the slow uploads were due to something called "volume leveling" which robbed system resources. De-selecting that in Music Match sped up the process immensely. I loaded my 28-Gig collection in about 3 hours. Because of Apple's clueless tech-support, the gizmo loses a star in my rating.
The controls are intuitive, and of course the design is elegantly simple. It's lighter, faster and easier to use than my previous MP3 player, a Nomad Jukebox, which lasted just 2.5 years before the hard drive crapped out.
The included headphones have excellent sound quality -- superior to my expensive noise-cancelling Sony's -- but are uncomfortable and don't block environmental noise. The volume cranks up loud enough to drown out most airplane racket, however. To avoid sore ears, comfortable noise-cancelling earpieces would be a good idea.
I also bought the FM transmitter, car kit and spare battery pack.
Now, I have my own radio station, loaded with 6500 of my favorite songs. It's amazing to think back to the days when I filled half my trunk with CD's on long driving trips, and now I have my entire collection at my fingertips, in the size of a pack of cigarettes. Right now, it's the best thing out there, but the competition is coming. Dell is working on its version and Creative is sure to follow. If Apple really wants to perfect the Ipod, they could include more comfortable, noise-cancelling headphones, a removable battery with longer life and reduce the unit's size even more.
As is, though, this is the device I think all of us music-crazy travelers have been waiting for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bose 3-2-1 GS DVD
I was a little nervous at first purchasing this system because of some of the negative feedback I heard on other systems from Bose & the high price $1199. ABT electronics did throw in the $120 speaker stands for free which was nice. After I first installed the systems it did not sound as expected; but after some adjustments to the angle of the speakers and raising the bass and treble in the setup menu the sounds is terrific. As Bose states in their manual this system is meant to realisticaly recreate sounds, not overdue certain effects like many systems do. So far I have had great enjoyement listening to CD's and DVD's, Top Gun sounds better than I have ever heard it. The set-up was easy, including the stands it took 25 minutes and then another 30 min to understand all the menus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Great Player
This is a great sound, you think how can 2 speakers have a 5.1 surround sound, well it can. I mean the depth, sound is rich in quality.

Pro's: Great sound, 3D depth, sounds like your in the theater. DVD player is a great player.

Con's: The worst con is that it does NOT support progressive scan out put, just regular Video cables, and S-Video.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SYSTEM EVER
I just bought this system for my livingroom. I use to have a surround sound system with like 5 speakers and the speakers werent that great and were everywhere in the room. This 3-2-1 Bose System is easy to set up and only had 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer. If you have a small to medium size livingroom this is perfect. Its as if you were sitting at the movie theater. The system sounds so good and is also a dvd player, cd player and am fm radio. Its a dvd stereo system all in one. Im so glad I bought this product. You cant go wrong with this one. ... Read more

Meade ETX125EC Telescope w/ UHTC, Autostar Controller (497) and Tripod (884)

    Editorial Review

The ETX-125EC permits a broad range of astronomical study. In deep space, the ETX-125EC's larger aperture enables the observation of galaxies and nebulae in much wider extension and permits the resolution of celestial objects as faint as magnitude 12.5. The entire Messier listing of 110 objects is now not only visible, but, in addition, every object takes on a readily discernible structure. The Autostar controller turns the ETX-125EC into an automatic celestial object-locating system.

    The UHTC Difference
Each time light encounters a mirror (above) or lens (below), some light is lost. In the case of a lens, light is lost at both the entrance to and exit from the lens. UHTC dramatically decreases this light loss.
Image brightness in a telescope is crucially dependent on the reflectivity of the telescope's mirrors and on the transmission of its lenses. Neither of these processes, mirror-reflectivity or lens-transmission, is, however, perfect; light loss occurs in each instance where light is reflected or transmitted. Uncoated glass, for example, reflects about 4% of the light impacting it; in the case of an uncoated lens 4% of the light is lost at entrance to and at exit from the lens, for a total light loss of about 8%. Meade standard mirror and lens coatings equal or exceed the reflectivity and transmission, respectively, of virtually any optical coatings currently offered in the commercial telescope industry.

Ultra-High Transmission coatings (UHTC), recently developed at the Meade Irvine coatings facility, however, have permitted the vacuum-deposition of a series of exotic optical coatings precisely tuned to optimize the visual, photographic, and CCD imaging performance of Meade telescopes. This telescope includes primary and secondary mirrors coated with aluminum enhanced with a complex stack of multi-layer coatings of titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide. The thickness of each coating layer is precisely controlled to within 1% of optimal thickness. The result is a dramatic increase in mirror reflectivity across the entire visible spectrum; at the important hydrogen-alpha wavelength of 656nm. - the predominant wavelength of emission nebulae -- reflectivity is increased from 89% to over 97%.

This telescope presents dramatically brighter images on the full range of celestial objects — from emission and planetary nebulae such as M8, M20, and M57 to star clusters and galaxies such as M3, M13, and M101. Observations of the Moon and planets, since they are observed in reflected (white) sunlight, benefit in image brightness from the full spectrum of increased transmission.

    And more
The computer-driven Autostar controller makes it easy to find 30,000 celestial objects.
Just plug the Autostar into the telescope's HBX port in place of the standard-equipment electronic controller, do a quick telescope alignment, and you're ready to observe any object in the Autostar's 30,000-object database.

ETX optical systems include a Maksutov meniscus corrector lens of Grade-A BK7 optical glass. High-transmission magnesium fluoride (MgF2) coatings on both sides of the correcting lens, as well as aluminum-silicon monoxide coatings on the primary and secondary mirrors, are provided as standard equipment. Use the standard pushbutton electronic controller at any of four dual-axis speeds: 8x sidereal for image centering in the main telescope at high power; 32x for image centering at lower powers or for pushbutton object tracking in the altazimuth mode; slow mode for image centering in the viewfinder or for terrestrial tracking of nature and sightseeing; or medium speed for fast slewing across the sky. The observer can instantly select any of these speeds simply by depressing the speed button on the controller.

The telescope’s ultraportable design allows the viewer to view from any flat surface, be it a window sill, car hood, or picnic table. The optional tripod can raise the telescope to any comfortable height.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Meade EXT125EC /uhtc w/ autostar
A novice to astronomy i bought this unit with extra bells and whistles, thinking it would be a good intro to astronomy. I am completely disappointed and would never recommend it to anyone for any purpose other then a door stop. Unless you already have some knowledge of telescopes avoid it at all costs. Set up is difficult to impossible, and what eventually appears is not much better then what you can already see on a clear night. As far as i am concerned this purchase was a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Telescope!!!!! Beginner or Expert!!!!!
This is an awesome scope that is so much fun to use and makes it easy as can be to learn about astronomy. It comes with everything you need to see some of the most amazing outerspace objects, nebulas, other galaxies, and more. I can not say enough how easy and fun you will have with this scope. You can use it for terrestrial or space exploration. The only negative to the scope is do not expect to get many hours out of the AA batteries. Buy rechargeables, or build you a 12volt power supply like I did with a lead-acid battery and small battery box. It will last you for several weeks of viewing and plenty of power. The price is not cheap, but remember you get what you pay for these days. I started with a lesser scope and had to upgrade a month later to this one. Just do it right the first time and get the ETX-125 now instead of wasting your time and money with other smaller scopes. Again, this is an awesome scope you will be proud you purchased and impress your friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Versatile Instrument
This is a great instrument for beginners and amateurs alike. Highly portable and easy to set up, which is important in light polluted areas such as Natick, MA. This allows me to get up and go to dark sky areas for fantastic viewing. Even in light polluted suburbia, the Moon, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Andromeda Galaxy, and the Orion Nebula are clearly visible as well as many other Messier objects. If you're a beginner, don't expect to see the flag on the Moon, Hubble Space Telescope can't even see that, or canals on Mars. Do expect to see amazing craters during crescent Moons and polar ice caps during Mars opposition. Jupiter is impressive to look at due to it's shear size. You can make out cloud belts and the famous eye of the 300 year storm. Jupiter's four largest moons show up as small points of light and they change location each night. It's as if you're looking at a miniature solar-system. Saturn and it's rings are among the most beautiful objects to observe. On very clear nights you can make out the Cassini division in Saturn's rings as well as it's largest moon, Titan. Andromeda Galaxy is viewed as a fuzzy cloud with more detail observable in darker skies. Use a CCD camera to overcome your eye's limitation by capturing the color and detail that are shown in pictures. The Autostar is an excellent educational tool with detailed information on each object. It allows you the hands-on experience of learning which makes it fun. Follow the instructions carefully for configuring the Autostar. The more accurate the motor calibration, the easier it will be to align to the stars. It helps to set your watch to the atomic clock which can be found at www.time.gov and use that for the time entered. This will give an accurate position of the stars according to the Earth's rotation. Make sure your telescope is pointed "True North" and follow the instructions for the fork arm location on the telescope. Learn the locations of a few stars during the different seasons in order to make the alignment procedure simpler. I found that if I placed the telescope slightly to the East of "True North" then each time the star it was aligning to was in my 26mm eyepiece. Don't be afraid to pick up the tripod and move it clockwise or counterclockwise until the star your aligning to is shown in the eyepiece. Then you can use the motor to center the star in the eyepiece. The less you use the motor for aligning the more accurate it seems to be and the faster it slews to the object. ... Read more
