Editorial Review

Despite its entry-level designation in Canon's digital lineup, the2-megapixel A40 is a surprisingly advanced model with excellent picture qualityand more manual features than you'll find on most digital point-and-shoots.

Resolution
With resolutions of up to 5 megapixels now available in other cameras, the2-megapixel chip in the A40 may seem wimpy, but for the camera's intended user,2 million pixels is a great balance between performance and price. Thisresolution means gorgeous full-screen images on your computer (even with a19-inch monitor) and prints that look great at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. Ifyou're hoping for a camera that captures even detail in each photo, considerCanon's 3-megapixel S30 or 4-megapixel S40.

Optics
A 3x optical zoom lens (35-105mm equivalent) aids in photo composition, and anadditional 2.5x digital zoom (7.5x total) further magnifies your image.Remember, however, that digital zoom reduces the sharpness and detail of yourimage, so it's best used sparingly. Two systems help ensure your pictures willbe perfectly focused, even in challenging conditions: a multizone autofocusworks even when the subject of your photo isn't in the center of the scene, andin low-light situations (a particular weakness of many digital cameras), afocus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accuratelydetermine distance.

More Features
Though it's primarily designed as a point-and-shoot, the A40 includes asurprising number of advanced features for photographers who want more creativecontrol, including aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual modes, exposure compensation, low-light manual shutter speeds, manual ISO and whitebalance, and stitch assist, plus black-and-white, sepia, vivid, and neutralmodes.

A movie mode captures video clips with sound. Depending upon resolution, theseclips can last from 10 to 30 seconds. The limited length and resolution of theseclips guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it'sperfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to afriend or relative.

The A40 is the successor to last year's A20. Physically, the two cameras arenearly identical, but the new model has substantially more manual controls and amovie mode.

Power
The A40 uses four AA batteries, and a set of alkalines is included. We don'trecommend using alkaline batteries in digital cameras unless you have noalternative, since the high power demands of digital cameras drain alkalinebatteries ridiculously quickly. Instead, we prefer lithium batteries foroccasional users, since these last much longer and also stay fresh if yourcamera sits unused for months at a time. If you use the camera more than onceevery couple of weeks, we strongly recommend getting a set of rechargeable NiMHbatteries and a charger. These can be recharged hundreds of times and hold anexcellent charge, but will lose their power in as little as a month of disuse. Many people solve this problem by purchasing a charger with two sets ofbatteries, keeping one set in the camera and the other in the charger at alltimes.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on standard Type I CompactFlash cards. Consider the included 8MB card a starter capacity, since its 12-picture limit means you'll need toreturn to your computer often to transfer images and free up the card for morepictures. A 128 MB card is a great size for this camera, storing around 200images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USBcable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automaticallyrecognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

Printing
Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with theA40. Using these printers, no computer is required--simply connect the camera tothe printer and start printing. The CP-10 produces credit-card-sized prints, andthe CP-100 makes 4-by-6-inch prints. Both use continuous-tone technology forresults that are indistinguishable from traditional photos. Of course, photosfrom your camera can also be printed on any home computer system with an inkjetprinter, sent off for online processing, or simply enjoyed on your computerscreen.

Size
Dimensions of 4.3 by 2.8 by 1.5 inches put the A40 in the middle of thecompact-camera pack. The plastic body keeps weight down to 8.8 ounces.

Contents and Recommended Accessories

The package includes the A40 camera, AV and USB cables, wrist strap, printedmanual, software suite, four AA batteries, and an 8 MB memory card.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but a few well-chosenaccessories can help you get even more from your camera. We strongly recommendthe addition of a larger memory card (a 128 MB card holds around 200 images), aset of rechargeable batteries, and a carrying case. A broad array of additionalaccessories are available, including a waterproof housing, an adapter forthreaded lenses, and more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect All-Around Shooter
It's outdated & unavailable new but I still think the Canon A-series line is the best balance of features, ease of use, & price.

My A20 is still going strong after 2 years and 3000+ photos. It has been thousands of miles by automobile & aircraft and still takes excellent shots.

There's 3 cons that keep these from being the perfect camera:
1. Finger-press to shutter time is just no good for those truly candid shots. It's hard to catch people in natural states while you wait for the camera to autofocus, fire off some anti-red-eye bursts, then finally snap the scene you just missed... You become well-trained to almost prophectic-like preparedness for moments like candle-blowing or most any kid action. Adults are far more camera-aware anyway, so an SLR is still the best way to go for any action requiring fast reaction times.

2. Weight. It's a mixed blessing since it comes mostly from the 4 AA batteries (ONLY USE RECHARGABLE, PEOPLE!) that allow you to go long between changes.

3. Size. It's barely pocketable in loose pants. And then it pulls your pants down. You won't be hiking or even just walking around much without a good belt (or suspenders). So be prepared to carry it by hand (good for quick snapshots) and/or stowing it in a camera bag/pouch.

I use a LowePro D-Res 25 AW bag which is bigger than absolutely necessary, but has MORE than enough space for a backup set of batteries & memory card, the A/V cable (in a perfect interior slot), shoulder strap, velcro belt strap, and an attached (but hidden) rain cover. Plus it's very well padded. It could fit the data cable too, but I don't carry that myself. Overall it's more of a (travelling) storage than everyday portage pouch.

I guess that's a bonus review of the pouch.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great... til it died!
My Canon Powershot A40 was also the most user friendly piece of technology I'd ever used until it died.Same deal as everyone else I guess. The thing will turn on but something inside no longer opens as the screen remains blank.Don't bother upgrading as all Canon cameras are pretty much similar. My sister-in-law's A75, which is 6 months old, just died of the same cause.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware: Lens Motor Life Span Is Short
The Canon A40 is simple to operate and takes decent images with its 2 megapixel/3x zoom features. It's compatible with a Macintosh OS/X and the digital imaging edit software is easy to use. After six months, the lens jammed and the camera did not function properly.I mailed the camera back to Canon for repair and less than six months later, the lens broke again while I was changing batteries.I googled the Canon A40 and learned that other consumers have experienced the same lens jam problem with their Canon A40.If you buy it, be sure to read the warranty details and have the 800-number ready to call.Good luck. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Own three SimpleTech 256 and a SimpleTech 512 CF cards
I've taken over 24,000 pixs with these on a Nikon CoolPix 5000 and only once did the 512 give me a fright. But in the end, the pixs were there. It happened during file transfer from the card to a PowerMac laptop. It could've been my fault; a little careless last weekend.

Speed of writing on SimpleTech cards is respectable; price is right though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have used this card for about 6 months and never had any problems. I used it in a Canon G5 camera.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with Muvo2
I purchased this card and the Sandisk 512 CF.Simpletech wouldn't format in the Muvo2.The Sandisk worked like a charm.Previous experience had this card fail in a week.I should have known better.I have never had a problem with Sandisk, but have been bitten twice with SimpleTech. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY FROM AMAZON.COM
Better cards are available from other retailers - just check epinions.com - you will find a whole bunch for $19 or less. Also they deliver, while Amazon does not.The item has label "usually ships in 24 hours", but I have waited 5 (five !) days, and still it was not shipped. Do not buy this card, and check other place than Amazon. The Amazon stinks...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic card - unbeatable price
I bought this SimpleTech card in early 2003 and have had great results with it.I have shot over 34,000 pictures on it using my Canon PowerShot G3.I use it extensively with my Dell X5 PDA.For the last month, I have been using it in my new Nikon D70 (over 5000 pictures so far from that).I originally paid about $60 for this card.

The card has never failed me.I have given it extreme use.I also have a 256 MB Sandisk card (it failed me once, and I had it replaced under warranty) and a 256 MB Viking card.I had read a review that the Viking card may not be compatible with the G3, so I never used it in that camera.I used the Viking card only in my Canon Powershot S400.However I did use all three cards in my PDA and in the S400.I have used the SimpleTech and the Sandisk both in my D70, as well as a new Sandisk Ultra II 1 GB card.

By comparison, the Sandisk 256 MB card was definitely the slowest when performing the same tasks. It could not keep up with mp3 playback on my PDA.It has noticibly slower write times for photos on my cameras, especially the G3. The SimpleTech and the Viking cards perform about the same as each other.Neither has noticeable slowness on my PDA.Photo write times on the G3 were acceptable with this SimpleTech card.It really did not cause a delay in shooting dut to waiting for pictures to write to the card.

Interestingly, on the D70, this SimpleTech card still keeps up well. The D70 has an advanced buffering system that can hold several (about 12 at normal quality full resolution) images while writing them to the card. This is so much buffer that rarely so I have the need to exceed this many shots in one burst. Thus, when I am using the SimpleTech card, it really does NOT slow down my shooting at all.

By comparison, I do notice that the D70 finishes writing pictures to my ULTRA II card sooner, especially after a burst of several frames.(based on the blinking light that indicates CF card activity)I really never have the need to shoot a continuous burst of frames all the way to a full 256 MB card.

My conclusion is that this 256 MB SimpleTech card is just about the best way to go for CF memory currently. It will cost you less to buy 4 of these (1 GB) than to buy one 1 GB Ultra II card. And then, if you have one of these fail, you will not be out of memory at a crucial time - because you have 3 other cards to use.And you would be able to get a replacement for the failed card later at your convenience.

I highly recommend using multiple smaller cards over single larger cards.256 MB is my size of choice, and this is my choice among inexpensive 256 MB cards. At the current price (around $20 at the writing of this review) you can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable and fast
I have been using this 256MB card for an year now on two of my Canon digital camera and a Casio PDA. It has always been reliable and there is no diminishing in storage capacity. Read and write are slightly faster than my San disk 256MB. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Has a mind of its own
I'm glad most people are happy with their card because I'm having a terrible time with mine.I just came back from a short trip and was transferring 21 pictures that I took to my computer.By the 4th picture, things came to a halt, it might have been my computer. When I tried again, the camera gave me the "No image" message.Yes, the card was blank, all 21 pictures in the camera simply vanished before my eyes while I was transferring them to my computer. This is not the first time.It did do a few little funny things here and there before.Obviously I missed the crucial sign of a greater potential trouble back then. This memory card has compeletely made me paranoid about taking pictures with a digital camera. It's one of those things that money refund won't replace what's been lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I've owned it for a year and it works fine.No issues with loss of storange or read/write speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid reliable product at a great value
I purchased the 128 MB Simpletech CompactFlash Card about seven months ago.My digital camera came with a 16MB card, but I wanted more memory and this was great. So far, it has been very reliable in holding pictures upto the full capacity.I read that other CompactFlash Cards can sometimes stop functioning after a couple months or not live upto the "promised" capacity. Not true with this card.I take quite a few pictures and therefore have used the card to its full capacity many times and then erased pictures from it using the camera.I didn't have to format the card and it's still functioning like a new one.I have not had a single problem with it and I am very happy with this product. The price was reasonable as well.I highly recommend this card to anyone looking for a CompactFlash Card. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about.Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The SimpleTech 64MB Compact Flash Card, like most 64MB cards, will store on average 71 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 53 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera,32 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 25 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 20 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simpletech still has never failed me
Being that I only had the 8 MB that came stock with my camera the switch to the Simpletech 64MB cf card was a huge difference.I have always been happy with Simpletech products. My last purchase of the 64MB CF Card re-assured my faith in ST.

5-0 out of 5 stars More MB means more pics for your digital camera!
I already have a 256MB compactflash card from Simpletech, but needed a little more extra just in case... for back-up.This 32MB card does the trick and it works just as well as the other Simpletech cards I have, which is just what I expected!!
