5-0 out of 5 stars More memory than I know what to do with.
I popped this into my Canon S100 and with the default resolution, got a reading of 1478 shots available! That's an incredible amt of space and for someone heading off on an extended trip, it should be quite a boon. I have been following CF costs on a dollar-per-meg basis for some time, and while the newest & largest cards have tended to carry a premium, this one does not. It is roughly fifty cents per meg, less than 1/4 of what it cost per meg only 18 months ago!

4-0 out of 5 stars REBATE ...
Read the fine print on the REBATE. you MUST send the rebate within 15 day of purchase. so I would not recommend the free shipping that amazon has to offer. It may take too long for it to reach your place. Good Luck. I had this Compactflash for a year now and it works just fine. People complaint about speeds of the download, but what do they want when they tranfer hundreds of picture and video. Go get a drink of water in between tranfer. Its not really bad at all, and its cheap.

3-0 out of 5 stars According to Viking's Rules...
In my informal comparison of the transfer rate of 256MB compact flash cards by Viking, SimpleTech, and Kingston, the Viking card came in a distant third. The Viking card took about 40% longer to transfer identical data. My card at least, did not meet the stated specified transfer rate.

So where speed of transfer is important, the Viking card may not be the best choice. For other less critical tasks, the Viking card has proven perfectly adequate.

5-0 out of 5 stars good solid card/brand
I have a 2 megapixel canon elph and own two other CF cards, (Sandisk 64mb and Fuji64mb) Reason I got another CF card was the price as of Feb 2003, was the lowest I've seen ever, and I did abit more research than before. check dpreview.com they have a section of CF card ratings and this particular card did very good, as far as speed and reliability.

I did my own amateur testing and noticed "slight" differences, the Viking and Sandisk cards were abit faster in taking multiple shots. (but this is a matter of miliseconds) reliability, I have had the two other cards for about 6 months and have not had a problem with data loss of any kind. On my 2 megapixel camera, the Viking 128mb CF card shot about 360-400 images "high quality" (depending on image size, each image can be a different file size, depending on the information each one requires)

So, I would just stick with a big name like Viking or Sandisk and you really cant go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zab
I love this card. I keep my Canon Digital Elph S110 set on the highest resolution/highest quality and have never filled this card up on a weekend trip. One day I took 120+ pictures, it is so easy to delete the ones you don't want afterwards. With the holidays and longer trips coming up I am purchasing a second 128mb card to double my capacity, you can't beat this price.... I also have the Viking card reader to speed up downloading and save wear and tear on the camera. I am very pleased with it. It works just like an external hard drive... It was a good deal then andit is an even better value now. Go with it! The best thing is thatyou will have comfort in knowing that you have the capacity to takethe pictures when you need to (you'll not miss out on those preciousmoments that will never repeat themselves). END

5-0 out of 5 stars Meets my needs
I recently purchased a Nikon Coolpix 2100 and bought this card for extra storage. At the 2 MP high setting, this card holds about 130 pictures. At the next lowest setting, it holds well over 250. For me, this is PLENTY of storage. Some people mentioned compatibility issues with the Coolpix, but this was not the case for me. You just need to make sure you format the card in the camera before its first use. Overall I think Viking makes a product which, for the price, is the best value on the market. Buy this card, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Do the math.
I use CompactFlash for my digital cameras, and I've become a fan of the Viking brand. However, I still buy by the dollar-per-meg calculation. Currently, this number should always be less than 2. It is curious to note that the prices on these cards are fluctuating almost daily, and by as much as 20% in one day! I suggest you find the card you want and track it a while. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 64MB card - 155 pictures for a 1MP Kodak DC240 camera
Well, I had no idea how much room a 1 MP picture would take up on a CF card. I know it is a combination of compression and format, but I never really did the math.

GREAT PRICE: I bought this card, number one, because the price was great. Now the price is even greater when you get it for about 2MB for $1.

NUMBER OF PICTURES THAT CAN BE STORED:
155 in a DC240 with 1MP.
55 in a DX3900 with 3.1 MP.
I never knew the MP versus MB formula, this practical application helped me out. I understand however, much depends on your compression and format. This was all .jpg files and on Kodak cameras.

SEEMS COMPATIBLE FOR PDA AND PC:
I know one of the concerns on these cards is compatibility. Since I have had it, I have put it in an @migo Pocket PC, on the PCMCIA card on an IBM laptop and a Kodak DX3600 and a HP315. It worked great.

Nice card and a nice size, I'm set for awhile now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value and good performance
I've used Viking components in the past and never had any negative experiences with their products. When I got a digital camera, I shopped the local computer and mall stores for Compact Flash memory cards before turning to Amazon.com. I was pleasantly surprised to find an affordable Compact Flash card in the capacity I was looking for made by Viking. The card works great with my Kodak digital camera and Sandisk CF reader. A top notch product at an affordable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great

2-0 out of 5 stars Why Buy This If There Is a Cheaper One!?!
Why should you buy this 48mb CompactFlash Card for $59.99 when you can buy a 64mb CompactFlash Card for ...(less at this website)?

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked like it was supposed to.
I bought this for our Kodak Digital camera and had no problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Updated Review after some difficulty
I had originally purchased this card in late January 2001. I use it with a Canon S100. After using it for about 3 months the card developed a problem. The problem: the camera detected the card as full, even though I had over space for over 250 low res. pictures left. I tried to format the card in the camera with no result. I then attempted to format the card on my pc with no results. I contacted Viking ( very easy to do ) and spoke with tech service. He explained the problem very admirably. I use the card regularly (several times a week) and erase photos using the camera's delete feature, or my pc's delete feature. By doing this regularly, the storage area on the disk becomes fragmented, and makes storing info difficult. The card was useless. They sent me a free replacement very quickly, it having a lifetime warranty. Viking recommends formatting the card weekly if you delete pics from it regularly. This will of course make you download photos on a more frequent basis. So if you are going to download frequently, and not use so much of the memory, perhaps a smaller card is the way to go. So I have begun using the card again, and so far, so good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Card
I got this card free when I purchased the Kodak DX4900 - no problems at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars good device, but too small
I got the unit free when I bougth my Ipaq through Amazon.
Unit is very functional but I upgraded to 128MB very shortly after I was using my IPAQ. 32 MB is too small. If you are buying, consider a larger CF to start with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive and still fantastic
CF readers with USB cords? Why bother? Say goodbye to those bothersome cords! This CF adapter is the answer to keeping your portable computer PORTABLE. One little adapter allows you to plug in your Compact Flash cards for quick and easy reading. I bought this item when I purchased my latest digital camera and it has been a blessing! It's so simple to use, light-weight, compact -- and incredibly inexpensive! How simple? Plug your CF card in one end, plug the adapter with card into the appropriate slot in your laptop and the computer is ready to read and write to the CF card just like it was another drive. How sweet is that?

5-0 out of 5 stars So nice, so very nice
This is a great little piece of hardware. I have used mine in both a Dell Latitude running WinXP and an Apple Ti800 running Mac OS X. It is the only way I transfer pictures now. Much easier to carry than a USB cable, plus it is faster, does not use up the batteries on the camera, and just flat out works perfectly.

Here is how I use it :
I take my picutres (duh ;-), remove the CF card from the camera and insert it into this adapter. Then I insert it into the laptop. Under both Windows and Mac, the CF card appears as a removable drive on the computer.

Under Windows, I navigate through a couple of folders to where the pictures are stored and copy them to a folder on my hard drive. On the Mac, iPhoto automatically opens up (because I have told iPhoto to startup automatically when a camera is connected) and it gets ready to transfer the pictures. I can then tell it to copy the pictures to my Photo library, and delete the originals. It does just that. Then on the Mac and PC, I tell the operating system to eject the drive/device, then I can pop the adapter out of the computer. Of course you can pop it out whenever you want, but you will definitely risk something bad, better to eject it the proper way. I can transfer a full 128 MB flash card to my computer is a minute or so. Fast enough that I haven't timed it.

So, I would highly recommend this to anyone who uses CF media with a laptop. It is the way to go!

...

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have accessory.
As other have already noted, the product just works. On a XP laptop, pop the adapter (with the CF card inserted) into an open PC card slot and the CD card shows up as a disk drive. No drivers needed. Simply read and write as you would any other disk.

If you camera uses CF cards and you have a laptop this is once thing to always have on hand. Finally, the build quality and reliability are superb. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than what's advertised
I first bought (and have reviewed) the ScanDisk reader, with which I had too many drive conflicts and installation problems. The Viking unit is better thought out, and this is apparent from the moment you open the box and notice how it is neatly and carefully packaged. I installed the Viking software (30 seconds, no options), rebooted and plugged the drive into my USB port. It was recognized by the OS and the correct drivers were installed and, voila, I was in business! I seems to read a little faster than the ScanDisk drive, has better indicator lights for on/active & reading, and includes an adapter that allows you to use the CompactFlash card in your laptop without need of the larger drive. As a last little bonus, the drive can also read SmartMedia cards!

4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfy your need for speed!
Assuming that spending the bucks on a memory reader isn't going to cause any heartburn, you won't be disappointed by the USB Flash Memory Reader.

Essentially, what you are buying is speed. The USB Flash Memory Reader is fast, fast, fast. I've experienced a screaming 25-50X improvement! Transferring jpeg images files from my Nikon CoolPix to my Windows laptop previously took many minutes via a serial cable connection. Comparable transfers now require just a few seconds.

The USB device is plug-and-play and pretty funky looking (think: iMac cool). The drivers for Windows and MacOS are available.

CAUTION: I'm told there are unique technical issues surrounding the Diamond Rio MP3 Player's proprietary audio files.

In summary, the USB Flash Memory Reader will satisfy your need for speed! (Well, at least, temporarily.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Viking IntelliFlash USB Flash Memory Reader is excellent.
This device reads Smartmedia [which is what I use it for] Compact Flash and ATA Flash Cards.

One barely needs to look at the User's Guide - this USB device is so easy to set-up. On a Mac, the software install is very quick. Once complete, the next and last step is to plug the unit into a USB port on your CPU or to a powered USB hub. That's it!

Once a SmartMedia card is inserted into the reader, it mounts on the desktop (Mac), just like a floppy, zip or any other storage device. This is super slick! To move the data, one simply drags and drops to a folder. But, it gets better: the data transfer is FAST! Wow! I copied a 4MB TIFF image from a SmartMedia card to a G3 in a blink of an eye. For digital cameras and other devices that use SmartMedia, this USB reader is superb - and at a nice price! ... Read more

Nikon Coolpix 880 3.2MP Digital Camera w/ 2.5x Optical Zoom

Editorial Review

With the Coolpix 880, Nikon has taken the 3.3-megapixel CCD and many ofthe advanced features from its semiprofessional 990 model and put them into atraditional compact point-and-shoot design simple enough for anyone touse.

The Nikkor all-glass lens features a 2.5x optical zoom (equivalent to 38- 95mm on a 35mm camera) with a macro mode that focuses down to 1.6 inches. A 4xdigital zoom further increases magnification at lower resolutions. Images arestored on a Type I CompactFlash card (8 MB card included). Maximum imageresolution is 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, and an uncompressed TIFF mode is available(remember, however, that uncompressed images are so large that you'll need abigger memory card to store even one full-resolution uncompressedimage).

Though the camera defaults to full-auto point-and-shoot mode, it has ahost of manual features for advanced photographers. In addition, Nikon hasincluded 11 special modes in which the camera is automatically programmed withthe appropriate settings for specific situations like sunsets, beaches, nightportraits, and extreme close-ups. For example, switch the camera to itsparty/indoor setting, and it will slow down the shutter and use a slow-synchflash with red-eye reduction.

The 880 is Nikon's smallest digital camera, withoverall dimensions of only 3.9 by 3 by 2.1 inches, and weighs only 9.7 ounceswithout a battery.

Power is provided by either a disposable 2CR5 lithiumbattery (included) or an optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Forenvironmental and economic reasons, we strongly recommend getting therechargeable battery kit for anything more than occasional use.

Image transferis quick and easy with the included USB cable. If you have an older computerwith only a serial port, the Coolpix 880 also supports serial image transfer(though you'll need to purchase the serial cable separately). The camera shipswith an impressive software suite that includes Genuine Fractals 2.0 LE for filecompression and scaling, Cumulus 5.0 demo for image management, and Great Photo!for image manipulation and correction. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great camera -- a few reservations, however.
I purchased a Coolpix 880 two weeks ago and have been incredibly impressed with the pictures I'm able to take with it. They truly rival 35mm shots in quality, especially when combined with a good photo printer. However, there are a few reservatins I have, mostly the result of the transition to digital photography.

First, the battery. You must buy the rechargeable, and even that won't last too long. I'm thinking of buying a second rechargeable for use on vacations, long family outings, etc. I can't imagine trying to keep up with this thing's voracious appetite for batteries any other way. YOu can minimize drain by shutting down the LCD or turning off full time autofocus, but that seems to destroy some of the reasons I bought the thing to begin with.

Second, the "lag." I put it in quotes, because I think it is mostly a matter of getting used to it. You push the button the instant you want the picture taken (for example, a one year old coming down a slide); the camera takes it around that time. Maybe at the top, maybe at the bottom, maybe right when you thought it would happen. Tricky. Thankfully, one year olds are happy to go down slides repeatedly (by which I mean all day). Even in the 2 weeks I have had the camera I have adapted, however, and this is no longer a problem.

On the whole, an excellent camera that will become better once I figure out exactly how to use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice camera - no rechargeable battery
I received my camera and immediately started taking beautiful photos. The menu is easy to follow and I like the scene option and quality of the display. I had compared it to the Sony DSCS70 with the Carl Zeiss lens and it was about the same in price and features, but I went with Nikon for their optics and menu options thining that I would spend the same amount of money. As well, I ordered the CoolPack for "all" coolpix 700, 800 and 900 series cameras. To my dismay the batteries that come with the CoolPack are not compatible with the 880 and the lens filters are not compatible either (I am assuming a step down ring is needed). I promptly returned it. I ordered a 64MB compact flash card for about $100. I took about 40 nice photos and kabam - the lithium ion batter was drained (it comes with a disposable battery). Each battery costs $12-13. Since I intend on taking many photos, I have opted to spend the extra $120 and order the re-chargeable battery, charger and small case. This is a hefty add on fee for what all the other digital camera's of the same price range come with standardly. The autofocus makes a rather loud noise. At first I was worried since it does not sound like it is a smooth moving part inside (lots of friction sounds), but I called tech support and was told this is normal for the camera to make these sounds. The lady at Nikon was professional and courteous, and hopefully correct in her information! All in all, I expect to take lots beautiful pictures very easily, but if you are not willing to invest about $1100 including the camera and accessories, then this may not be the camera for you. If the camera had come with the battery, charger and protective cover/case I would have given this a 5 star review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Digital photography is fascinating
Having used this CP880 for about 2+ yrs, I've still on the learning curve and have only scratched the surface . Although most shots are quite good with the Auto sequence, it's nice to have flexibility with manual settings. Be prepared to buy the extras to make your digicam experience practical: 2 re-chargeable Li-ion batteries and the charger; upgrade to a 64 or better yet a 128 MB CF card with card reader (supplied with my Lexar 64 MB CF card. USB connectivity reader greatly expedites transfer of files to PC); optional digital wallet (Minds@work 3 GB portable HD for travel and downloading on the road); belt case (to keep the CP close by for those "once in a lifetime shots"). I'm familiar with many controls but the manual is a bit cumbersome. I'm now reviewing "Nikon Coolpix 880 Photography by Dan Curtin...to pick up more nuances. The CP4300 may be a more current version and deserves consideration. All in all, a great camera. My 1200 shots taken in Oregon,Washington,Vancouver, and Victoria were burned to CD's with relative ease thanks to my CP880 and peripherals. Some of my Butchart Gardens shots were spectacularly polarized courtesy of a hand-held 52 mm polarizing lense from my old 35 mm Nikorrmat!! ... Read more
