4-0 out of 5 stars Good buy
I am a regular Linux user and my requirements in having a laptop were (a) it have nothing to do with Microsoft and (b)
be easy to use and carry. I toyed with the idea of getting a bargain laptop and loading Linux on it, but after playing with the iBook in the university's book store, I decided this was it.

I have used this machine only for a month now, so I don't have extensive comments. By and large the machine is very good.

What I liked: Apple has done a very fine job when it comes to the screen. It is brilliant and crisp. Setting up the machine to connect to the network (both via modem and ethernet) was effortless. Appleworks is great in converting MS files and the presentation suite is very nice. Hooking up this system to a projection system was very easy. (I have seen people struggle with their Microsoft based systems.)Loading up with software such as TexShop, OmniWeb, etc. was very easy and I could get going without wasting much time. The "sleep" feature and "waking it up" work very nice and are very convenient.

What I didn't like: Apple should have made a much better keyboard. There is a perceptible and disconcerting keyboard flex. For an expensive machine such as this one, this would have been a basic requirement. Apple really cut corners in making the "press-to-open" CD drive. The drive itself couldn't get any flimsier. I can tolerate some keyboard flex, but the flimsy drive makes me not want to give it 5 stars. Of course, Apple's warranty systemcould be better, not that I needed to use it.

    5-0 out of 5 stars It's not a flashlight----L@@K it's an iBook!
I was out of town on business a few weeks ago when a lightning
storm hit a sleepy New York town that was my temporary home.

A group of us were in the hotel dining room when all the lights
went out. The emergency lights were not enough to light the way back to the dark rooms.

An hour went by and we were getting a bit antsy.

I remembered that I had my iBook back in my room.
It was ready to go with the screen saver "slide show" on the iBOOK,.... a screen saver of my own
pictures I had taken while on the road.

The hotel clerk led me to my room by flashlight where I retrieved the iBOOK.
Opening the lid and turning on the machine made a good even
light to get back to the resturant in the complete darkness.

When I got near the entrance I was greeted with an "OHHHHH AHHH!"
--------you see the Apple on the cover was lit up like a beacon! -----and the angel like glow
from the monitor shone softly all about the room!

The slide show was a success, but the iBOOK won over the
    crowd!!!
I was just finishing my iBOOK demo and putting in a jazz CD
to show off the audio when the lights came back on : (

This is a true story, the names haven't even been changed!

Enjoy your new MAC laptop and spring for even more RAM if you can.
    Cheers!

Boy!this is very beautiful, and good capabilities. my iBook is the 14" with 256 MB, and it runs quite ok. although there is slight down side with its speed while opening an app. or running a video. but rest its gorgoeus, and runs quite good, if you are in to looks and style this is perfect. its software integration is greate. and i absolutely love it. if its for personal use at home or studies this is perfect i gues. ... Editorial Review

Any business that requires documents to be shared, reviewed, and editedacross broad networks will undoubtedly benefit from Adobe Acrobat 5.0. If you'venever used Acrobat before, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to convert Officedocuments and Web pages to PDF files (portable document format). If you alreadyuse Acrobat, new features and enhancements--including the ability to uploaddocuments to Web sites and intranets--make this version a worthwhile upgrade.

Installation is quick and easy; within 15 minutes of opening the box we weresaving Web pages as PDF files and adding comments to our documents. New usersmay want to take a tour around the help sections (either online Help or tooltips) to get acquainted with the program. In addition, checking out the helpsection will ensure you don't miss out on some of the more hidden featureswithin the application, such as color management and timesaving Windows and Macshortcuts.

One of the most important new features of version 5.0 is the ability to developnew documents from PDF files. You can now save the PDF file to Rich Text Format(RTF), and then edit the document using your word processor. Another importantnew feature is the ability to create interactive forms, which actually look alot like their paper counterparts. And once you figure out how to upload theseforms to your company intranet, you can share them with all relevant teammembers. Team members can even sign these forms, using a password-protecteddigital signature.

As always, the ability to comment on documents and Web pages remains animportant reason to use Acrobat. A toolbar on the left-hand side gives userseasy access to the list of comment tools, which range from highlighting tools, note boxes, pencil and line tools, and strikeout tools which let you erase linesof text. Once you've marked up a file or Web page, you can send the file to teammembers, business contacts and clients. As long as they have the Acrobat Reader(available free from Adobe's Web site), they should be able to read these files. And Acrobat retains the quality of your documents when you print them, so youdon't have any nasty surprises when you pick up your documents from theprinter.

Companies with employees in different physical locations can only benefit fromAcrobat 5.0. While version 4.0 is obviously still a strong and very usefulproduct, upgrading to Acrobat 5.0 promises a host of Internet-ready new featuresdesigned to accompany your business to the next level of high-speedcommunication. --Gisele Toueg--This review refers to the Windows version. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Merely a Stepping Stone
Since, for some unknown reason, Adobe doesn't offer a direct upgrade path from Acrobat 3 to Acrobat 6, I bought this Acrobat 5 Upgrade merely so I could qualify for a free upgrade to Acrobat 6.Not only is this silly of Adobe, it's also expensive.Instead of buying an Acrobat 6 package, sticking my old Acrobat 3 CD into the drive, and continuing on my way without further hassle or expense, I had to buy the Acrobat 5 upgrade, go to the Adobe website to find their customer support phone number, call them via their 800 number, get them copies of the receipt, pay a token shipping cost, and then install the new software. What's even worse is that I've spent over six weeks trying to do that.Amazon got me the package immediately. But, so far, I've had to talk to Adobe (at their expense) five times. The first time was to find out that the upgrade existed and get the instructions for faxing the information to them.Supposedly, my fax never arrived. Then, I had to talk to them about that and get a snail-mail address.Supposedly, THAT package never arrived. Then, with my next call, I managed to get an email address to send the documents to.Again, supposedly, that never arrived. Finally, I talked to a person who had me re-fax just the receipt and my Acrobat 3 serial number. She called me back within a half an hour and we completed the whole process (confirmed my shipping address and got a credit card number for the shipping fee).Besides the hassle I had to go through, this upgrade must have cost Adobe a bundle in phone and support personnel costs. The free upgrade period from Acrobat 5 to 6 is over now, but Adobe really needs to come up with a better way for their old Acrobat 3 customers to upgrade.

2-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Aggravation
I ignored the various warnings by other contributors and bought 5.0 for an upgrade from 4.0. I had wanted (and tried) to load my old 4.0 into my new computer, but gee, what a surprise, macro error messages prevented access to Microsoft Outlook and other M/S programs because (apparently) XP Professional and Adobe Acrobat 4.0 can't quite seem to get along. (Planned incompatibility to force repurchasing?) Hence, I bought the upgrade. It loaded okay once I figured out that the serial number that wanted entered for 5.0 was really my old 4.0 serial number, although they specifically stated to enter the new 5.0 SN (which was rejected). At any rate, I got it loaded. Now, even after trying in vain to adjust preferences to minimize file size, when I create a pdf file from Excel the pdf file is 7.5 times as large as the original Excel file. This negates one of my main reasons for buying the thing in the first place since I want to email smaller pdf files of my Excel reports. I suppose if I were a geek I would chuckle at this problem and make some mystery adjustment somewhere and obtain the desired results. After hours of struggling with this, I tried to contact Adobe. The message stated that all their suppport personnel were in a meeting...Congratulating one another, no doubt, on their fine product. All I want is to be able to send a Word or Excel file as a decent-sized pdf file--which I could easily do with 4.0. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrated I am. I pay for everything, pirate nothing, and get this garbage for my efforts and expense. If you can do without this product, hold your ground.

Revised comments added a couple days dater: I did reach a very helpful tech at Adobe who quickly talked me through my problem with wanting smaller pdf files. If you need this info: (1) Select Print, (2) Select Adobe Distiller Document, (3) Select Properties, (4) Select Adobe PDF settings, (5) Select Conversion Settings, and then (6) Select the "Screen" option (assumes you aren't using fancy fonts, etc.)Now why didn't I think of that?Actually, on the 3 different occassions that I did reach techs, my wait proved to be minimal, and they all were helpful. But I still have a grudge against what for me is an over-engineered product that has taken a simple concept and turned it into an expensive and involved effort. If you live and breathe this stuff, then 5.0 will probably satisfy your various whims. But if you are an infrequent user wanting minimal functions, then you'll have to jump through some unwelcomed hoops. With Adobe Acrobat 5.0, one size fits all--and "all" means all those who eat kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes for breakfast, lunch, and supper. Those of us with big fingers and little patience won't be quite as enthused with the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best deal going right now for Acrobat
By the time I was done reading the reviews for Adobe Acrobat 6.0 I was depressed. Not only do I not have Windows XP, or Windows 2000, or NT installed in my machine (The only operating systems that will work with 6) I also couldn't muster up the confidence in the product after so many people were giving it the thumbs down. I want to create an eBook, and Adobe Reader is the most popular reader out there, with some 400 million, to a half a billion users with it installed. What a dilemma. I kept coming back to read some more. Finally I found the answer. I bought a new Adobe Acrobat 5.0 here at Amazon from one of their vendors, and it works great with my Windows 98SE. I planned on buying the 6.0 upgrade after they got the bugs out, and or I got a new computer with XP. Then I found out that 5.0 was the only version before, and that was the professional version. 6.0 Standard is a geared down version of 5. Ok, so it has some additional features, but it is missing all the rest of the professional features that 5 has.
So what's the skinny on the deal? For what I paid for a new 5 that is the full program, unregistered, and upgradeable, plus what I would have to pay here at Amazon for the 6 Professional Upgrade, I saved 80 bucks, and wound up with both versions 5 and 6 pro. Which as I mentioned are both professional versions. If I bought 5 and upgraded to 6 standard, I would only spend a little more for both versions. (About 4 percent more for standard, and about 20 percent less for professional) That way if 6 standard turned out to be as bad as many were saying it is, I would have 5 also.
In the final analysis, I am using 5 and am super excited about the new capabilities that Adobe Acrobat gives you. I'm hoping that by the time I get a new machine with XP on it, Adobe will come out with 6.something, or a second edition of 6 etc. with the fixes built in.
I'm not the only one to come to this conclusion. I noticed in the sales rank at the time I bought it and wrote this review, that 5 was outselling 6. Also I noticed that in the "Those who bought 5 also bought this" section, it had a special note that said, 47% of the people who bought 5 also bought the 6 upgrade. If your running XP, 2000, or NT, get them both. That way all the bases are covered.
Check out the reviews on 5 you'll be surprised how everybody raves about it. To be perfectly honest with you, if I had an XP machine, I would have ordered the 6 upgrade at the same time. Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Newbie to Acrobat
Yes indeed Adobe Acrobat is too expensive, but, when considering the alternatives of buying other brands of PDF software that have less than pleasing quality, it all boils down to choosing the product that has the highest quality. To my knowledge, Acrobat is still the best PDF software available.

My personal needs are to create PDF files, encrypt them, require passwords to view, and restrict the user from printing and copying. After testing a couple other PDF products, I quickly discovered that their security was overly easy to bypass, no I take that back, they were *ridiculously* easy to bypass. Adobe's security has so far proven to be usefully solid.

Since Adobe provides limited public information about their products, I recommend that you first buy a book teaching how to use an Adobe package and read it through so that you will know what the software actually does and does not do. Yes, I agree, having to purchase a book and spend the time studying is not the prefered way to learn about any product, but the few dollars invested can easily pay for itself by your knowing which software to buy (or more specifically, what not to buy!).

What has amazed me the most with my Acrobat experience is when I had to call Adobe customer service to get a complex upgrade to version 6. Not only did the girl answering know what I was talking about, she also accomplished the entire order within that one phone call! WOW! Customer service like that is unheard of today. Apparently Adobe does care about its products enough to hire quality employees, and with that level of care, I feel more confident that I made the right decision choosing Adobe. Too, I purchased Acrobat from Amazon for the same reason of wanting quality service.

There are other PDF products available, some are even free, but for those of us who prefer quality and usefulness over initially lower costs, Acrobat is an intelligence choice. Choosing the right product today, the one that does not crash nor take time away from our work to fiddle with settings, gives us more time to whine about the costs later. If Acrobat were less expensive, I would give it five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential if you like to save web pages
I use Adobe Acrobat for many things--creating PDF files, editing them and writing documents for work. But if you visit web pages and want to save or print them, the Adobe Distiller is really essential.

The Distiller acts like a virtual printer, and saves a web page view as a PDF file, complete with images. Unlike saving a web page, which relies on being on the internet to bring up linked photos, the PDF captures the pictures and creates a document that you can store away. Even if the webpage is taken down or altered, you have a copy of it. Web pages are rather ephemeral; they come and they go. This is a good way to document them.

I don't find the interface particularly easy to use--it's not like the Microsoft Office package and the icons are all new to figure out. The price is somewhat steep, though it's been lowered recently.

Despite these criticisms, I would not be without this software. It's probably one I use more than almost any other on my PC. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than Useless
Acrobat 5 is a great product, but Adobe has done a lousy job of communicating its many valuable features and how to use it. Totally unstructured and unintelligible, this book is an example of what happens when computer programmers attempt to communicate in English.

I recently participated in an Acrobat focus group made up of people who use the product in their daily work. Everyone agreed that it's very useful in a wide range of applications, but they all had real difficulties learning how to use it. This book only adds to the problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars UGH!!
After plodding through many chapters of this book, I am totally exasperated. Not only was the book fraught with errors, but the information was, at best, inadequate. I am an indexer and a Mac user. You cannot create an index in OS X and that is not documented in the book. It is apparent that the authors, Adobe staff, never tested the instructions for the lessons on OS X. in addition, there are too many "check online for information about xxxx" references. If i wanted the information online, I would not have purchased a book. The waste of money is small compared to the waste of my time. One star is definitely a high rating for this book.

Designed for people who like to push one button and let the camera figure out everything else, the A200 is a fully automatic, 2-megapixel digital camera that also features a movie mode for capturing short videos and PC camera capability. It's also one of the first digital cameras to utilize the tiny XD memory card.

Featuring a CCD sensor with 2 million effective pixels, the FinePix A200 delivers a wide range of detail and color (with images up to 1,600 x 1,200 pixels) and prints up to 8 by 10 inches. Like many other entry-level digital models, the Fuji keeps the price low by using a focus-free lens with no optical zoom. A 2.5x digital zoom does bring your shooting subject closer like an optical zoom, but at the expense of image detail. The lens also has a macro setting (for shooting extreme close-ups).

For photographers who want more control over their photos, there are several options: the flash has five modes, the white balance can be adjusted to optimize colors under various lighting conditions, and exposure compensation can be set to lighten or darken your shots.

In addition to taking still photos, the A200 can also record silent movie clips of up to 20 seconds. What's more, the camera can be connected directly to your computer's USB port for use as a Webcam.

The camera is powered by two AA batteries (alkalines are provided), but we recommend that you buy a set of rechargeable batteries, as they last longer on a single charge and quickly pay for themselves. Images are stored on XD memory cards, and a 16 MB card is included, which stores approximately 25 images at fine mode and 39 images at normal mode.

This package includes the FinePix A200 digital camera, 16 MB XD memory card, two AA alkaline batteries, USB cable, hand strap, and CD-ROM with software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value
I had and tried several digit-cams and can say that you cannot find a better camera for this price.

      Pros:
      + Great value, low price
      + Easy handling
      + Portability, light weight
+ Great Fuji colours, good auto white balance
+ Fast shutter response, close to film cameras
+ Control over exposure, flash and pre-programmed white balance
+ It uses AA's, great battery life
+ Changig between images in playback mode doesn't take hours
+ Excellent prints from the photos

      Cons:
      - Images noisier than competition (but they are more expensive also)
      - Images too much compressed, therefore less detail, no control over jpeg compression (but this is the same with most Fuji models unfortunately)
      - No control over ISO
      - Low resolution LCD, too dark in low-light
      - No optical zoom (but at this price it's ok)
      - The camera has a cheap feel to it (but again, at this price it's ok)
      - Weak flash for outdoor night shots, but enough for smaller room shots
      - Flash recharge time takes a few seconds, camera freezes (but this is the same with most Fuji models unfortunately)
      - It uses expensive XD-cards
      - Sluggish zooming and panning in playback mode
      - No sound in video

I highly recommend this camera for beginners or to those who doesn't want to spend more on a digital camera.
I've read many negative reviews due to it's bad photo indoors. Okay, it's not a Canon G3. At first I thought the same, but then set the controls to manual, set the exposure up to the highest value and then shot the picture. The end result was much better than in full auto mode. So my advice is indoors and in low-light set the exposure manually, you'll be glad you did I promise.
The colours are well balanced, and the prints come out great, no matter how noisy the images are, you won't notice that on the photo paper.
This model is now out of sale, but if you can find a second-hand one at a good price don't be afraid to buy it, it's an excellent buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars it doesn't work
Hey this is for everyone buying cameras over the world out of the united states, I have a problem with my camera and I don't have anyone to help, I've been trying some help in amazon's help area but they just have thousands of links but any simple email where I can ask for some help, I don't really understand why is this site so well known on "customer service", but I just cannot communicate with no one in the company to ask anything, I'm just mad about this, if anyone can help me to contact amazon or fujifilm please post an email or whatever cause there's no such a thing like help in the "help area". I need to repair my LCD monitor of my camera, it's really fragile, so if you're still thinking on buying in this site or even buying something from fujifilm, don't do it, they don't care about the customer satisfaction at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good scanner, dubious quality
I had a UMAX SCSI scanner that was a workhorse from 1997 through 2002.I got a LiDE 30 about a year and a half ago, and it has developed a short in the USB port, which causes it to be uncommunicative with the computer unless you hold the cable in the socket JUST right.I am unimpressed with the durability of this scanner. It scans SLOOOOOOOW compared to the SCSI or USB 2 scanners on the market.

I would only recommend this for light use home users that do not have any need to move peripherals around, plug and unplug the device, and are amenable to slow scanning speeds.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this scanner. It's just simple, plain and simple
As noted in one of the reviews. The software is in great, but the fact it is powered by USB is one less chord to worry about.I recommend it to anyone interested in a cheap portable scanner. You'll fall in love with it.Again, don't expect too much and we pleasantly surprised.

One thing I love the auto crop feature when I scan a photo it crops it in the final image.Instead of having a big white area where there was no photograph. It is cool.

      Peace out

1-0 out of 5 stars Dirt on inside platten!
This scanner can with dirt on the inside platten, so my scans are all grainy! Very poor quality control. Read the web, others have had this problem too. Stay away; you'll be sorry.
