Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 by Jasc Inc. Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (12 May, 2003) list price: $109.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review It's good to see that even mature applications can benefit from innovative thinking--Jasc has improved the latest PaintShop Pro in several areas. PaintShop Pro is one of the original graphics editors, stretching back over 10 years. This latest version of the program features a new interface, which is more logically organized. Gone are the cumbersome floating palettes, so much a feature of earlier iterations. The tool options palette, for example, is now a context-sensitive ribbon under the menu bar. Lifting a leaf out of the CorelDraw handbook, the colour palette and several others have been rearranged as dockers on the right-hand side of the screen, too. The painting engine itself has been rewritten, to give smoother control over your brushstrokes and it's now quite possible to do delicate work with the mouse, where before a graphics tablet might have been necessary. Several new tools have been introduced and others have been enhanced, so theyre equally useful to the casual photo retoucher and the professional digital artist. A couple of examples are the red-eye removal and erase-to-background tools. Red-eye removal calls up a two-pane dialog, for editing on the left and preview on the right. After highlighting each eye in turn and selecting the color and hue you want it to have, the result can be a very natural looking pair of irises. Erase-to-background enables you to paint away any part of a photo and leave just the unpainted parts as a foreground image. It's more intelligent than a simple eraser and detects line edges, so works particulraly well on high-contrast subjects. Other new tools include warp and mesh warp brushes A major new productivity feature is the scripting recorder, with which you can teach the program a task and get it to repeatedly run that sequence of operations. This is ideal, for example, if you want to convert a batch of files from one format to another or resize a series of images. --Simon Williams, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more Features Reviews (58)

Paint Shop Pro 8 for Dummies by For Dummies Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 March, 2003) list price: $21.99 -- our price: $14.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (5)
If you have used Paint Shop Pro before, then you may want it for a reference.I do not like the way that the authors dove away from some of the tools. Unlike their opinion, I found some of the tools VERY useful in correcting photos and should be explained. For example, they do not explain the dodge/burn tools.I knew what these tools do but the authors attitude was you won't need them. That may be true for someone just wanting to use the program for quick corrections butit is used alot in retouching. Overall, the authors did explain why some of the tools behavior which helps understand why something did not work as you had expected.I feel that this is a good beginners book if like I stated before, you are not looking for a tutorial type of book.

Nikon Coolpix 2000 2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom by Nikon Average Customer Review: Electronics (15 October, 2002) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Nikon Coolpix 2000 is a bold step for Nikon, because it further broadens Sony's digital range as the manufacturer moves from top-end SLR cameras and prosumer models into the popular point-and-shoot arena dominated by Kodak and Fuji. The Coolpix 2000 shares many of the design cues with the recent 2500 with a silver finish and metallic blue accent around the lens and the absence of a normal optical rangefinder. Instead, as with the 2500, Nikon has chosen to ensure that the LCD viewer on the rear of the camera is of sufficient quality to be used in all conditions, including bright sunlight. It has also ensured that the camera will run comfortably on four AA alkaline batteries. Unlike the 2500, the Coolpix 2000's lens does not rotate into the body of the camera--it does, however, have an automatic lens cover. The Coolpix 2000 is not the smallest 2-megapixel camera weve seen. However, it has a nicely rounded body and will fit comfortably in the pocket. Controls are straightforward and comprise shutter release, power slide, mode dial, zoom controls, menu navigation, and buttons for self timer, macro, and flash. The modes include party/indoor, backlight, portrait, night portrait, and beach/snow. We found that when chosen carefully, these modes would significantly improve the quality of the final image compared with the Auto setting. The Coolpix 2000 scores highly in two areas--image quality and value for money. It takes excellent pictures in most conditions. The colors are accurate and the images crisp. This must be due to the quality of the Nikkor lens and the in-camera processing. The Coolpix 2000 offers a lot of bang for the buck, providing many of the features found on Nikon's high-end range. For instance, despite the Coolpix 2000's many automated features, you can still adjust exposure and metering as well as manually set white balance and in-camera sharpening. Nikon has also included its Best Shot Selector, which takes a series of images while the shutter is depressed and then saves the sharpest to the flash card--this can produce better images more reliably without using up your memory. The Coolpix 2000 is supplied with a quick start guide, a comprehensive paper manual, strap, 16 MB CompactFlash card, four AA alkaline batteries, AV cable, USB cable, software CD, and reference CD. The basic image transfer software supplied is the excellent and straightforward Nikon View 5. This provides an interface to the camera to upload images, and then organize and view them. --Nick Baxter Pros:
