5-0 out of 5 stars You have to have this.
If you're even bothering to VISIT this site, you are a person that needs Tivo.I bought our Tivo two years ago, and it has transformed our lives.Seriously.We never, ever bother to rush home to avoid missing Friends. We never pick up a TV Guide. We never miss new episodes of Trading Spaces or Modern Marvels.Sopranos?Got it.Sex and the City? We've seen every one.

The funniest thing about having Tivo is that it changes your television conversations with others... I might tell someone about a cool new show (something Tivo selected FOR me that I wound up liking, for example), and the person will ask, "What channel is it on?"

    I have no clue.

    "Well, WHEN is it on?"

No idea.Tivo takes care of everything!I watch WHAT I want WHEN I want.Channels... times... superfluous!

Tivo takes EVERY SINGLE responsibility or burden off of you, the television watcher.Cliched as it may sound, Tivo really is "TV Your Way!"It's easier than a VCR with better quality, control, and versatility... I can certainly understand why the media isn't advertising it (have I MENTIONED that I haven't watched a TV commercial in TWO YEARS?), but I can't understand anyone not having this in his or her home.

It streamlines your television viewing, and saves you time, turning television into an active and dynamic pasttime, instead of the modern-day opiate of the masses.Sound good to you?If you get it, I cannot imagine you regretting it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Tivo, great if it worked!
    10/30/03

My Philips TiVo 20 hour Tivo was working great for about four or five hours until the hard drive started acting up.Now the Hard drive seems to be messed up some how and all I can see now is a bunch of lines and blank screen. Now I have to go through the trouble of getting it fixed. This SUCKS because I just spent $150.00 for it and now the stupid thing won't work!

3-0 out of 5 stars When it works
I love the concept of the product. It's great when it works.Today, I'm sending it in because they say the hard drive needs to be replaced.I don't know if I will send it in.The exchange price is almost the cost of a new one.Funny how it waited one month after the warrenty was up.This one is really the fourth one that I've had.The first three didn't work out of the box.In order to get this one, I had a very patient Best Buy employee go through their stock until we found one that did work.In the end, there was only one left on the shelf. ... Philips DSR6000R DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service

    Editorial Review

While you probably have one or more personal computers and may own a personal digital assistant, you might not know about personal digital video recorders, or DVRs. Well, all that's about to change, because DVRs are reshaping TV in a big way.

At their most basic, DVRs are glorified VCRs, but instead of storing audio and video on magnetic tape, they digitally record and store TV programs onto a hard disk drive, like a computer (but with much better resolution than those video clips that people sometimes send as e-mail attachments). The Philips DSR6000 DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service represents a new generation of DVR, combining AV recording services with duty as a DIRECTV satellite receiver, delivering up to 225 channels and special pay-per-view programs. It also uses TiVo proprietary software and services, which it downloads over an analog phone line.

The DSR6000 houses a massive, 40 GB hard drive that stores up to 35 hours of audio and video. You'll need a satellite dish to get started, in addition to your TV and the equipment supplied with the DSR6000. The DSR6000 is equipped with two satellite inputs, each compatible with DIRECTV. Only the first input is currently usable, but that's about to change.

If you don't already have a DIRECTV satellite dish (as you would if you were upgrading from an older DIRECTV receiver or buying the DSR6000 for use in another room), we strongly recommend you purchase a DIRECTV satellite dish with dual LNB capability. Dual LNB simply refers to the number of different signals a dish can send to your audio-video equipment. A dual LNB dish has two jacks or connectors inside the arm extending from the dish, while a single LNB, for example, has just one.

If you currently have a single LNB DIRECTV dish and want access to these changes as soon as they become available, an authorized installer can upgrade your dish (please call DIRECTV for more information at 1-800-347-3288 or visit them online at www.directv.com). If you don't know what LNB format you have, we recommend checking with an authorized installer, as you can't determine the LNB format by counting the number of arms pointing back to the dish.

You'll also need an analog phone jack to receive TiVo's services and to transfer data to the DSR6000. A 50-foot RJ-11 phone cord and telephone line splitter are included, so the receiver can share a single wall jack with a phone, if needed.

The DSR6000 automatically makes a daily call to TiVo at no cost to you. This call won't interrupt your phone calls or Internet connection, and the receiver is compatible with Call Waiting, Voice Messaging, and Caller ID. However, it's important to note that the DSR6000 must never be connected to a digital PBX phone system. Doing so may permanently damage the modem. It also voids your warranty.

Out of the box and in your hands, you'll immediately notice the substantial weight of the DSR6000; it's clearly built for performance. A robust "jack pack" lets you connect your TV and a range of audio-video components with this receiver, including a VCR, DVD player, and/or a game center.

Audio-video connections include an S-video output (cable supplied) and an optical digital-audio output (cable not included) for state-of-the-art video and audio. Two analog-audio stereo and composite-video outputs (cables supplied) offer extended connectivity with conventional equipment, while infrared (IR) and serial outputs are offered for future upgrades. An RF (CATV) output with channel switch (cable included) and a VHF/UHF input (for an antenna or an older VCR) complete the package.

Worried that the resolution of the TiVo storage will compromise the quality of your recordings? Don't be. Unlike a VCR, the DSR6000 gives you exactly what you put in. That's because the video signal from DIRECTV is digital, allowing the DSR6000 to write the satellite signal's ones and zeros directly to its hard drive. In addition, the DSR6000--like DIRECTV--is Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic compatible so you can enjoy your TV in surround sound when you route the audio output to your surround receiver.

The Philips DSR6000 also offers software programming and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). It's the first DVR to bring TiVo Version 2.0 software to the public, offering several improvements over previous releases, such as enhanced search features that can do keyword program searches, and an overtime scheduler that lets you add a buffer to the end of your recording--so you don't miss recording the play of the century just because it occurred in overtime.

Installation is a snap; the DSR6000's onscreen menus walk you through the process. Philips includes most of the accessories needed, along with a user-friendly suite of manuals. In addition, we tried out the customer support on three occasions during peak hours. Our wait never exceeded 60 seconds, and the Philips service solutions group on the other end of the phone was informed and helpful.

A DVR like the DSR6000 gives you unparalleled control over your viewing. First off, any time you're watching TV, a 30-minute recording buffer is always in action, letting you pause live TV--the image freezes when you hit pause, but the hard disk keeps recording. When you resume playback, the recording now stored on the hard disk picks up where you left off. So if the phone rings or the kids can't wait, you won't miss a moment of your show. You can pick up right where you left-off, skip the commercials that ran while you were with your family, and you may even end up finishing the program on schedule.

For sports fans, nothing rivals instant replay of live TV. Say you just watched an incredible triple play. With TiVo, you don't have to wait for the network's replay. Just replay it on the DSR6000. You can watch in slow motion or frame-by-frame and still catch up to the network's replay.

Both TiVo and DIRECTV offer several convenient features--status bars, channel banners, programming schedules, Wish Lists, recording archives, and more--that make TV watching easier than ever. And you can toggle between either system's features, using those you like best.

TiVo includes a search feature that lets you find programming based on theme, actor, time, date, etc. A programmable parental lock lets you guide your child's TV viewing. A clever thumbs-up/thumbs-down feature can track your viewing likes and dislikes. TiVo uses this data to search out and recommend new programs that you might enjoy.

You can record a lot of programs on the DSR6000's hard drive. TiVo manages these in a storage cache called Now Playing. You can select a recording from Now Playing and watch it, even if it's recording. You can also opt for the Season Pass feature and record an entire TV series. You can even set TiVo to record first-run shows only, ignoring the repeats. As the DSR6000's disk space fills, TiVo helps you manage it.

DIRECTV delivers a staggering range of program offerings into your home--up to 225 channels including music channels. Its video quality is equally outstanding. DIRECTV displays program schedules 14 days in advance, which is great for planning recording time or if you travel a lot. If an alternative audio track is available, DIRECTV also lets you listen to both TV programs and movies in other languages.

Among the best features of both DIRECTV and TiVo are their special programs. DIRECTV offers DIRECT TICKET, pay-per-view programming that you'll find nowhere else. TiVo offers its own television magazine called Tivolution, featuring one-of-a kind interviews, movie reviews, and special previews, as well as TiVo Takes with tips and programming updates for viewers.

Philips's DSR6000 DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service not only reshapes your TV viewing, it rethinks it, ultimately letting you create your own network. --Heidi Wartelle ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DirectTiVo is Crippled - Not fully enabled
I've had 6 Tivos but up until now, they have all been freestanding (TiVo1 and TiVo2) units. I switched to satellite about a year ago and was thrilled to find that DirecTV was offering Tivos.....Until I brought mine home. What they DON'T tell you is that DirecTV TiVo is designed and built for DirecTV only.It DOES NOT record cable or over the air broadcasts, it DOES NOT support networking (a fantastic feature for getting your schedule via Internet and sharing shows between multiple TiVos in a household) and, because it doesn't support networking, it also doesn't support the Home Media Option (which allows you to stream audio and images from your PC to your TiVo).It also doesn't support web based scheduling requests or the soon to be released TiVo-to-Go.These are all features that are central to the TiVo culture and I'm amazed that DirecTV has crippled their version of the TiVo service.I'd happily pay out the few bucks a month to add a DirecTV unit to my TiVo subscription, but DirecTV doesn't allow for it.

The long and short of it is that this is not a fully enabled TiVo and there isn't much you can do about it.If you just want a PVR with a nice interface, this is probably it.But if you want TiVO, as in ALL of TiVo, then skip these direcTV units, buy a regular TiVo and hook it up to you current satellite receiver. Not only can you record over-the-air or cable this way, but you get every one of the TiVo functions that the folks at TiVo have thoughtfully built into thier units.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best TV Accessory Ever!!
I will make this short & sweet...this thing is amazing! It has truly changed our TV watching for the better.

    Thank you, TiVo!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I own 4- They are great!
I don't generally write reviews, but after seeing some of the complaints you have posted, I decided to set things straight. I have owned 4 of these units for over 1 year and the only problems we ever had were caused by incompetent installers. When there is a problem, either your sales person or later, DirectV will replace the unit as long as you purchase a service plan. They all work beautifully, and they have completely spoiled my family. My teenage sons said, " Mom this is the best thing you ever bought". If you are not afraid to read directions, you will easily be able to run the software. No modems ever gave me trouble, nothing ran hot, everything is just as specified. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A review for Macintosh users
I have a Macintosh G4 (AGP) that shipped with a 20gig Western Digital drive. My internal 20gig was filled to the brim with mp3 files and I now that I have an iPod to sync to, I didn't want to delete any of the mp3 files on my drive.

The Maxtor drive was recommended to me[....]P>I had never installed a hard drive in my life, but after surfing different Mac sites, I saw photos that showed how simple it was.

The drive works great and I had to make absolutely no modifications to the jumpers... literal plug-n-play and boot-up.I kept the internal 20gig and put this 80gig drive on top in the slave drive rack.

I connected the ribbon cable and power connector, closed the panel and started up the Mac. The drive didn't show up because it hadn't been initialized. I used Mac Drive Setup (all Macs should have a copy of this installed by default on the internal Hard Drive... there will also be a copy on your System CD) to initialize and partition the new drive which took less than 1 minute.

My less than perfect rating is due to the total absence of Mac-related documentation with this drive. The box it comes in has both the Windows and Macintosh symbols/trade markers, showing that the drive is compatible with both platforms.

The drive comes in an electrostatic bag and is well packed in heavy foam rubber and comes with a mounting bracket to make this drive fit in 5.25" drive bays in older PCs. It also ships with an extra ribbon cable and 8 screws.

In addition, it ships with a floppy disc and a CD-ROM. The instructions tell you that you will find all the information you need on the CD. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. If someone has a failed hard drive (not just adding a 2nd drive like I was doing), it is impossible for them to use the CD or do anything.

Still, the tiny printed sheet inside the box implied that all jumper settings, etc. would be on the CD-ROM. I loaded the CD in my Mac, and wouldn't you know it, not one Mac-compatible file on the whole disc.

I threw caution to the wind and plugged everything together as-is and it worked on the first try. I'm not sure whether this was solely due to the simplicity of the Mac or because of superior settings on the Maxtor drive, but either way, I am very pleased to now have space enough to use Photoshop and store more mp3 files. [....]

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, drive, poor instructions.
Anyways, this hard drive is a great one, VERY VERY good...I can't even hear it right now, and it is fast as hell. 9ms? Try about 2 or 4. And the capacity is great too, though I don't run a warez site, I do collect alot of programs and that means I need lotsa space, not just 10 lousy mb like my old drive. The only fault with this is with the manual. It goes take out, place on holders, poor poor diagram of screws, put in drive, another poor poor diagram of where screws should go, and then put in tape/power (no diagram at all!). And also they only send you half the screws you need. But it gets a 4 because it makes up for all this in drive quality. I recommend this drive for more intermediate-advanced computer people, novices get a different product or you will have to pay for a computer store to do it for you. ... Read more

Canon EOS D30 3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $3,499.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The Canon EOS D30 is one of the few available interchangeable-lens digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras. It's designed to offer the performance and picture quality of a film-based SLR with the convenience and features of a digital camera. Based on Canon's EOS line of film cameras, the D30 is compatible with all EOS-related equipment, including EF lenses and EX-series Speedlite flashes. This model is targeted at "prosumers" (serious consumers and some professionals), and its EOS compatibility makes it a natural choice for people who already own Canon equipment.

If you're accustomed to using a Canon SLR, the D30's features and controls will be familiar. As with film models, the shutter speed, aperture, and focus can all be set manually or automatically. White balance can also be adjusted, either by selecting a preset value or by shooting and storing a reference image. Unlike most digital cameras, the traditional optical viewfinder is the only way to frame your shots; the 1.8-inch LCD monitor on the back of the camera is for perusing images and adjusting settings only. One bonus of this arrangement is that the D30 is always ready to take pictures; you don't have to worry about changing modes as you must on most digital cameras.

The introduction of the D30 also marks the first use of a CMOS sensor in a multimegapixel digital camera. Because CMOS sensors are less expensive, use less power, and are easier to manufacture than the traditional CCD sensors found on most cameras, there are high hopes that CMOS will be the primary sensor technology for the super-high resolution digital cameras of tomorrow. Until now, however, CMOS sensors have offered inferior results when compared to CCD, so they've been found primarily in entry-level and toy digital cameras. Canon seems to have solved the image-quality problem by custom designing the CMOS chip in the D30, and the company claims that their sensor offers better performance than most CCD sensors.

Images are stored on Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards, including the IBM Microdrive. By default, files are recorded in JPEG format, though there are also settings for TIFF and RAW recording. TIFF is the most common lossless recording format, and TIFF images can be viewed and edited with virtually any photo editing software. TIFF files provide the highest-quality images, but at a price: a single D30 image occupies nearly 10 MB of memory. RAW, in contrast, is a newer format that's not recognized by as many photo-editing software packages, though Canon provides a plug-in to let Adobe Photoshop users directly import RAW files, and also includes software that lets you convert RAW files to TIFF files on your computer. Like TIFF, RAW is a lossless format, yet RAW files are only about one-third the size of TIFFs. Because the RAW image comes directly from the sensor and has received less in-camera processing than other file formats, it also offers experienced users more image-correction options.

A final note about the EOS D30. The CMOS sensor is smaller than a 35mm negative, which means that when you take a picture, the focal length of the lens you are using is greater. For example, if you took a picture using a lens with a 28mm focal length, the actual focal length would be 1.6x greater, or 45mm. If you're currently shooting with a Canon SLR, this makes your zoom lenses even more powerful, but it also means that you'll need to pick up a wide-angle lens or wide-angle converter to regain the range of focal lengths you have with film. --Michael Lewis and Shane Burnett

    Pros:

    • Compatible with all Canon EOS equipment.
    • Features RAW mode for ultimate photographic control.
    • SLR flexibility and control.

    Cons:

    • Expensive.
    • Focal length adjustment makes wide-angle shooting difficult.
    • More memory is the first accessory you'll need to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool!
This camera was the best investment in my photography that I could have imagined.Without the cost and concern of film and processing, I was free to make as many photos as I wanted, and to adjust the settings to learn about the effect of such control. With my EOS lenses, my existing investment was prolonged.I have printed and posted much of my work, and the quality has met or exceeded local labs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Aspiring Intermediate Photographer
You need to take a lot of pictures to become a better photographer, and you need to learn from the pictures that you take. You get immediate feedback from this camera.I've owned mine now for over a year and I can see the vast improvement in my abilities. The biggest drawback is its slowness, and the second is that you have to multiply your lens by 1.6 to get the true focal length. But it takes all of the Canon lenses so I switch around between my film camera and this one.In all, I've been very happy with this camera and it has gone everywhere with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5000 pictures and I am still wanting another D-30 camera
I purchased a D-30 from Amazon last year and I previously had been using a Digital Nikon. The improvement was monumental in all aspects. I subsequently drowned my camera, and I am getting ready to repurchase another D30. They are not ready for water yet? I have taken approximately 5000 pictures and saved them all in the most usable format and I will continue to do the same. The Photoshop software that comes with the camera is very user friendly, I am sure there are many features yet to learn, but I have been extremely happy with what I have already used. I hesitate to say mastered. ... Read more

The compact optical system of the Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L USM makes it a lightweight telephoto zoom lens. Its inner focusing ring and USM focus drive give it high speed, yet silent, autofocusing capabilities. The fluorite and super UD elements in the lens construction give you high image quality across all its focal lengths, and the nonrotating front lens makes it easy to use polarizing filters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It comes with a shade and pouch.
To be clear. This lens comes with a shade and pouch. Also, the lens is light enough that you do not need a tripod collar. My first lens did not have a functioning auto-focus, but Amazon shipped me a functioning lens by 2 day air before I could even take the defective lens down to UPS! I was able to print out a shipping label, slap it on the old box and take it to UPS no charge. No charge on the 2 day shipping for the new lens. So, I am a happy customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars holy kickawesome
I will not say anything that hasn't been said before, but not enough good can be said about this lens. I use it on my Canon 300D (digital rebel) and frankly find it to be a great range. Very sharp, focuses fast (at least as fast as the camera will allow) and constant aperature is nice. One downside: very long, and heavier than the lenses I've owned before. The weight is a good thing, but the length makes balancing it difficult. I'll probably need to get the battery grip for the camera. Some have complained about the aperature of 4 to be insufficient on cloudy days. I haven't found that to be a limit. Setting the ISO to 400 seems to be enough to gain enough shutter speed for shooting larger birds and action. However, maybe it doesn't get as cloudy here in Minnesota as elsewhere? Doubtful. This is not a great lens for shotting stages though, unless a beefy flash is brought along. The lighting there is usually just too dim, even at ISO 1600. Even on a tripod, if there's movement on the stage, you won't be able to stop it.

If you want the tripod collar, get it. It's not necessary though, even on cheaper tripods (mine is 30 years old, and it was cheap then).

But mostly, as others have said, the biggest problem is that it introduces you to "L" lenses. This is a steal for the quality you get, but they definitely get more expensive, and buying anything less will be a noticeable step down for you. Don't let that inhibit you though. This is a primo quality lens at a spectacular price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my god!!!
I have used cameras for the past 10 years. Both digital and 35mm.I have used more lenses than one can count to, well sort've :)I have developed my own photos in professional labs and so on.Okay, enough about me, here's my review:

I bought a Canon EOS 20D DSL camera and bought this lense to capture some close up action. All I can say is, "Oh My God!"This lense and that camera are the best thing god, I mean Canon, has ever put on this earth.I have never seen such BEAUTIFUL and CRISP photos.I thought I was a very average photographer with all of my photos looking like I shot with a $7.00 disposable.Until I bought this lense! The photos you see in Sports Illustrated magazine or Victorias Secret or whatever, this lense has that quality factor and then some.

As for the other specs, here goes nothin'...I bought this lense thinking that it would be michael jackson white. Well it is actually a white/beige color.Almost a tan white. It is not the white color you see on printer paper. It is more like the white color of your old lady's undies.Know what i'm saying?Anyway, the weight of this lense is fairly light and comfortable for anyone capable of carrying a briefcase (for exmaple) all day.But the image quality will truly bring out the professional in you.

This camera has some great features. I have shot photos of my kitty indoors and under very low light. The lense picks her up with and without flash. You don't need a tripod as I have done all my shots by hand. The lense comes with a hood and a case which is cool too.

I highly reccomend this lense and I also reccomend the purchase of a "UV FILTER".A U.V. filter will protect your delicate L series lense in case of accidents.Check this out... The first 2 hours after I opened my package and installed my lense, I took it back apart and put it in its case. I set the lense in my closet and within seconds my stupid cat jumped to grab the tightening string. Well, my lense fell off the shelf (in my closet) and thank god I had the U.V. lense. It hit my wood floor but nothing broke.Needless to say my kitty got a butt kickin'.Just spend the extra $20, it's worth it to protect a $500 investment.

And remember, if you don't like this lense whatsoever... You need to see a shrink to check your head..But other than that, you can sell this thing on the internet for nearly what you paid for it.Canon lenses do not lose value like cars.Mainly because Canon produces quality. And this my friends, is the definition of a Quality Product! Kudos to Canon! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens has multiple moving lens groups that enhance image quality and make the whole system more compact and lightweight. This lens uses an ultrasonic focusing motor (USM) that gives you silent, high-speed autofocusing. Canon eliminated all the mechanical couplings in this lens and added a custom-designed autofocus motor as well as a microprocessor.

Built into the system is a replica aspherical lens element that minimizes optical distortions to give you sharp images. The flare-cutting diaphragm helps the lens produce a high-contrast image, even in tough lighting. Its high zoom ratio of 3.5x allows you to take tighter shots of your subjects. It's fully compatible with all EOS cameras. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm in (not) love!
UPDATE: 29.Mar.2005 (see original review below)

After shooting this lens for several months, I started realizing that I was getting some pretty ugly color shift. Gradually, I became more and more unhappy with it, to the point that I rarely use it anymore. Unfortunately, I can't afford to replace it, so it remains my only lens in the normal zoom range. It's not a bad lens, but it's not nearly the lens I thought it was when I first got it. If you shoot landscapes with it, you're going to be faced with finding a way to fix the color. For every day use, I suppose it's fine.
    ______________________________________
After shooting Canon's 28-105mm on my Canon A2e for five years, I had to replace it with a similar length lens equivalent for my new Canon 10D.The 24-85mm comes out to be a little longer on the short end, as well as on the long end (38.4-136mm "35mm equivalent").At twice the price of the 28-105, I can only say that you are getting twice the lens, and it's great.you will pay more for 67mm filters for this lens (as opposed to 58mm for most of Canon's consumer lenses), but it's all worth it!

This is a fantastic lens made from fantastic glass. It's a joy to shoot, and it's a great match to the smaller 22.66mm sensor of the lower-end pro digital bodies. It's worth every dime of the price.

    5-0 out of 5 stars middle-class lens
This lens is almost superb for its price! It's a middle-class lens, what appears in the following:

    - it has bigger light-factor (3.5-4.0 vs 4.0-5.6 in the low-class lenses). This gives you more possibilities, for instance to use faster shutter speeds or to decrease the depth-of-fild for special effects)

    - the first (outer) lens doesn't spin what gives you an opportunity to use square filters; using a poliriser becomes as easy as any other filter.

    - the USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) gives you a really super speed of focusing and completely silent engine. You'll catch the fastest actions and nothing will distrub your object!

These are the most important and useful features of the lens. I should also admit, that the focal distance of this lens is almost ideal for everyday photography, because gives you an opportunity to shoot from landscapes (~24-50mm) to portraiture (~50-85mm) with an equal simplicity and quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Documentary Lens
I've had this lens for a few years now, and I absolutely love it.It is compact, sharp, and dependable.I'm a wide-angle shooter, so this one is just about perfect.Canon's USM is beautiful.Unlike Nikon, Canon seeks and achieves quiet, fast, and accurate auto focusing.Coupled with a light and quiet EOS camera body, and you've got an excellent documentary kit, great for shooting people in close and personal. At 24 mm, this lens gives excellent range for close work, with lots of depth and sharpness, making focusing and composing a cinch in evolving situations. My only gripe with this lens is its manual focus ring.I grew up with manual focus, and I love excercising that skill, but this lens has nothing more than an obligatory, plastic, and poorly placed focusing ring that discourages manual work.Fortunately, Canon's autofocusing system is phenomenal.Round-out your EOS kit with a Canon SpeedLite (compatible all the way down to 24 mm). ... A member of Canon's Speedlite family, the 540EZ is a high-output, auto zoom, shoe-mount flash with a maximum guide number of 54/177 (ISO 100 meters/feet). Compatible with all Canon EOS cameras, Speedlite flashes automatically evaluate shooting conditions when you depress the shutter button, and set aperture and shutter speed appropriately. 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent flash unit.
I upgraded from a Speedlite 300ez to the 540 and am very happy with it.The flash is very powerful and recyles quickly allowing me to shoot fairly rapid shots in low light.

In addition to being a show mounted flash it can serve both as a slave and as a master for additional 540s.This allows you to set up shots with fill flash from multiple directions using the TTL metering.

Overall I'm very happy with this flash and recommend it for anyone looking for a show mount flash. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This product is great - cheap and easy
I wanted to extend my remote control ability so I could change the signal being transmitted from my DirecTV receiver on the 1st floor from my basement, where I have another TV that receives the same programming.I have an old TV (mid 80s) in the basement that does not have a remote.Setting this product up took about two minutes - I merely set one unit about 10ft from my DirecTV receiver on the first floor and the other unit on the top of the basement TV.Not only does the signal change work perfectly from the basement, I can now also change the volume on my basement TV without getting up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, easy set-up.
I purchased the Terk Technologies LF-IRX extender and have been delighted in the way it performed.I was tempted to purchase another, more expensive brand but after reading other positive reviews for the leapfrog on Amazon I decided to give it a shot.It works great.I recently decided to move my cable box, pre-amp/tuner, dvd player, and cd player into the built in cabinet below my TV. (They were an eye-sore, at least to some in my household...)With this product, I am able to easily control all of them through the small monitor.

It was easy to set up - just plug it in.I was also pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't need to fuss with the positioning of the product within the cabinet (i.e. at least in my application, it didn't need to be directly in front of and aimed at the electronics equipment).Even if it was a problem, this controller comes with an extension wire (you could put the monitor behind the equipment and wrap the wire to sit in front of the receiving area on the stereo equipment), whereas I've noticed that some of the other products out there require you to purchase this type of feature as an add-on.

In short, I am very happy with the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, fair price
Normally my reviews are very wordy, but this one will be short and sweet: the Leapfrog is great. I am using it to control devices in a cabinet, so it is only transmitting a few feet, but it works perfectly.

The inclusion of the remote extender cable is great. Without it this would be only a 4-star review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to set up
By comparison with the experience I had with a similar product by Linksys, this baby was up and running in no time. I set it up in a Windows XP machine and then in a Windows 98SE machine, and both times it was a breeze to get up and running. One piece of advice (I learned it the hard way): don't expect this technology to go be able to go through metal doors. It just will not happen. Other than that, in a more "normal" setting, it should perform just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This thing literally worked right out of the box with an SMC PCMCIA NIC.I typed in the AP's address and started configuring.I turned one feature on at a time until I had 128 bit WEP and access control working. The only thing that gave me any trouble is that the web interface requires "0x" before the hex for the WEP string and the NIC won't accept it.Not a big deal for me, but I can see why the guy in the store warned me that people return SMC stuff a lot because they can't figure out how to set it up.

BTW, I also have an SMC router that has worked flawlessly since I bought it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not great.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A great mp3 player
I have been looking for mp3 for several months. And finally I bought nex II from Frontier Lab a week ago.

The box has quite complete description of product's feature yet it is very informative.

I was so surprised that it was so easy to download songs from my mp3 collection in my PC to my nex II. It is as easy as 1,2,3. Since it shows as removable device, all I have to do is drag songs I want to download from local disc to the device in windows explorer environment, no hassle for downloading any software to my computer. Isn't it great..????

The sound quality is great, I never expected mp3 file can be heard so good. There are 5 options to choose sound mode that makes it perfect to be used for playing different kind of music. It also has user option so I can set the equalizer for the sound that I really want. I like the sound that is more bass and little midrange, and unbelievable it works !!! it's like hear from the real CD player.

The last thing, I like it because it uses compact flash memory so I can use the one from my digital camera. Isn't it fantastic ? one compact flash for 2 kind of electronic devices??

    Editorial Review

Lexar Media's high-speed digital film helps your camera capture images faster, so you spend more time taking pictures and less time waiting on your camera. Lexar's CompactFlash cards are individually speed rated so you know the minimum capability of the card. Lexar uses the same rating system used by the CD-ROM industry, where a data transfer rate of 1x equals 150 kilobytes per second (KBps). The higher the speed rating, the faster your camera will be able to write images to the memory card.

For professional shooters who need immediate confirmation they've captured the shot or who want to identify accurate exposure levels or bracketing range, Lexar's patented 12X speed (1.8 MBps) transfer rate makes the card ideal for fast-paced applications such as photojournalism, sports, and fashion. And Lexar's solid-state design provides reliability in harsh shooting environments, mandated by professionals throughout the world.

The Digital Film Compliance seal assures you that your Lexar Media digital film is 100 percent compatible with your CompactFlash digital camera. It can also be used in all other digital devices that support the CompactFlash format, such as PDAs, video recorders, and MP3 players. All Lexar Media CompactFlash cards meet the CompactFlash Association's specifications and are marked with the CF+ symbol. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great flash card, great company!
Not only is this a great flash card, the company is great to deal with. On our recent vacation, I accidently deleted all our pictures. I thought they were lost! A friend suggested we try to find someone to try and recover the lost pictures. After several inquires I was directed to send the disk back to the manufacturer with a description of what happened. I called a service rep at Lexar and he said if I sent it to them they would give it a try. To my surprise, they were able to recover the lost pictures and returned my flashcard at no cost. Thanks again to Lexar, you've earned a loyal customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Memory Card!
I have 4 Canon cameras that use Compact Flash. I decided that I wanted to have a backup card for each camera and I bought 4 of these particular cards for that purpose. CF cards are resonably priced nowadays. This particular card (times 4) has worked very well for me so far and I have not had a single issue regarding it. Based on that I 'have' to give it a 5 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Card for the price! But beware speed!
This card is great, especially given the price. But beware the 12x- I don't think that many cameras actually take advantage of the speed increase! Maybe with card readers it will download faster, but it certainly hasn't made it possible for me to make more pictures faster on my Canon 10D. But then again this card is an Excellent buy the the cash... it'll be money well spent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Player - Nice Picture
Had this one for several years.Plays Backups well and always good picture quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
Overall, good quality picture and progressive scan is definately a plus. However, on the negative side, the dvd, like other reviewers have noted starts fiddling with the bay - it opens and closes and you have to grab it to insert a dvd.Further, the dvd has excessive motor noise which I can hear during luls in the movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a DVD Player in name only.
Any claim that the machine is capable of playing a DVD is completely false. I have owned this machine for two years, and it nearly always refuses to load DVDs (from the day I purchased it on - no problems with Audio CDs though). On the rare occasion it accepts a DVD it crashes frequently. It is not a DVD player - it is a cheapy built black box that is capable of accepting DVDs for brief periods of time before it finds it can not read them. I would have a similar success rate watching DVDs if I placed the DVDs in the refrigerator and then connected the refrigerator to the television with a rope. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars JVC RX-778VBK-"Its all good"
This reciever has been great for the apartment that I'm currently in. Since I can't play it too loud at certain times its prefect.I choosed JVC cause most (JVC recievers) have nice crisp sound thats not destorted and very clear, compared to others. The 100X2 when listening to music sounds like studio quality and 100X5 surround sound is also great, a JVC DVD player onscreen control. Very easy is to operate was/is a plus.As far as speakers I have Klispch quintet which are nice also. I would reference this reciever to someone starting out that wants to have a great sounding system thats not to beefy, sounds crisp, a nice look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Sound & Price!
The JVC RX-778VBK is an excellent sounding receiver, with a great digital surround sound section. With a DVD player & good speakers, it sounds terrific. No noticible distortion and plenty of power. Easy to use &set-up, very good FM reception, as well. Certainly not the equivalent oftop-of-the-line receivers like the Denon 5700, it does share a number ofthe features of the most expensive units. I compared this to the equivalentreceivers from Technics, Sony, and Onkyo, and thought the JVC offeredbetter sound quality, more features, and greater value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully surprising...
I purchased this reciever in a package along with the Cambridge Soundworks Movie Works II Home Theater Speaker system and i must say that I am pleasantly surprised. Because it came in a set, i assumed that it would beunder-powered, and have sub-par sound quality. When i took it home, i wasvery surprised. It not only exeeded all of my expectations, but i have notcome upon a better reciever for the money. DTS? Who needs it? Instead ofshelling out all that extra money so that you can play the select few DTSdvd's, buy this little guy and save that extra money for purchasing aCambridge Soundworks Movie Works II (which i am also extremely satisfiedwith). This reciever has 110 watts for the front speakers, and 100everywhere else. Not only that, it also has outputs for TWO SETS of mainspeakers. I have another set hooked up in my living room which i use formusic. I have them shut off for movies so that i may take full advantage ofthis recievers spectacular dolby digital decoder. It even has TWO opticaldigital inputs! One slight misfortune- the remote can only control JVC dvdplayers, which i remedied by purchasing a Sony LCD Touchscreen Remotecommander. (sounds as good as it is!) This reciever fits right in with thebest of systems-mine. ... Read more

Bose Acoustimass 6 Series II Home Theater Speaker System (Black)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The Acoustimass 6 Series II home theater speaker system uses patented Bose technology to bring lifelike sound to your stereo or multichannel audio components. The Acoustimass 6 speaker system is small enough to blend effortlessly with any decor, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to bring large sound to small rooms. The Acoustimass 6 system is compatible with Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS, DVD-Audio, and SACD program material, so long as your receiver provides a means of folding the LFE (low-frequency effects) ".1" signal into the front left/right speaker signals.

Hookup couldn't be easier using the system's color-coded speaker cables. All 5 primary channels from your receiver--front left, center, right, and left/right surround--plug directly into the rear panel of the system's passive Acoustimass module, which derives rich, full-bodied bass from the front left/right signals and passes each audio signal to its appropriate corresponding cube speaker.

The system's 5 Virtually Invisible cube speakers deliver vivid and lifelike music and movie sound. Just 3 inches square, these small speakers faithfully reproduce the clarity and natural sound of a live performance. Accessory mounting options let you mount each small cube speaker to your walls or display them elegantly on speaker stands (using optional wall mounts or speaker stands).

Bose recommends placing the Acoustimass module at the same end of the room as your television. The cube speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion if any of them is placed on or near your television. To prevent interference from the Acoustimass module, keep it at least 2 feet from the TV.

    What's in the Box
An Acoustimass module (subwoofer), 5 cube satellite speakers, 1 module end cover, all requisite hookup cables (1 x 20-foot system input cable, 3 x 20-foot front speaker cables, and 2 x 50-foot surround speaker cables), 8 protective adhesive rubber feet, a user's manual, and a quick-setup guide. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars clean bass, great balanced sound
I recently upgraded to the AM6 model having retired my AM3 (with different rear speakers). I have read other reviews on other sites that claim this system won't rattle the walls - well, perhaps the contributor did not set up the system correctly. Place the AM module (bass module) FACING the wall, about 2-3" away and prepare yourself for enjoyment!
I think a lot of Home "Theaterphiles" prefer the "boomy" or "thumpy" bass - well, more power (no pun) to them! The Bose AM6 produces the kind of bass response I really like - smooth, pure and without the boxy thump some systems make.
The surround image is a delight and one can fiddle with the little speakers to create an image field to suit one's taste.
All in all, it is hard to beat the quality and versatility of this system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crisp, clean and high quality, but not loud enough
I was lucky enough to find the Acoustamass 6 system at Sam's club coupled with JVC amplifier/tuner for a little less than you would pay for both if purchased separately.Bose lives up to their reputation for quality sound, but I found the system to be lacking in sheer ear-bleeding amplitude. The system can be run safely (100 W per channel) at maximum volume, but it simply doesn't get as loud as I think it should.Otherwise, I have no complaints about this fine product from Bose.

5-0 out of 5 stars I had doubts, but no more
I had been leaning towards a powered subwoofer and larger satellites from other companies when my wife gave me the AM6 on the recommendation of an audiophile friend. I have not been disappointed. The sound is crisp and clean, and when watching DVDs the rumble from special effects is great - I did not think a passive subwoofer and my modest receiver could do this. Perhaps this can't rattle the walls like a hundred watt subwoofer but the clarity and balance is simply great.

The setup instructions are very good, and the single big cable with all the wires for the receiver made hookup in the entertainment unit much easier. Only drawback is that the subwoofer must be relatively close to the receiver (~8 feet tops). It's a small price to pay. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jvc Vhs Vcr
The Jvc Vcr That I Have Now Is Wearing Out But That's Not Going To Stop Me From Enjoying The Use Of A Vcr But I Like The Dvd Player As Well

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
This is the first and last JVC product I will ever buy.I have had it 2 months and still can't get it to function properly. I bought it for specific features that JVC advertises, none of which work. It says you can tape one channel while watching another- didn't work. They have you send away for a "cable eye" (which I assumed would fix the problem - it didn't) which takes 3 weeks to get to you, (by then the time limit for sending the vcr back for a full refund was exceeded - very convenient). The so-called "customer service" is a joke (plan to sit with the phone to your ear for 30 minutes)and when they do answer you get a recording about how your call is being taped/monitored FOR LEGAL PURPOSES! This alone should tell you what they are up to. When I finally talked to someone he told me that the tape-one-channel-watch-another function doesn't work if you have a cable box!! I bought the thing because it was advertised to program both the vcr and the black box with one VCR+ number!! Not only that, the plug-and-play and the auto-clock-settings don't work. When I first came to this web site there was a review similar to mine on it and I stupidly bought the thing anyway.Don't throw your money down the toilet on this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars If you do not get TIVO this is a good high end SVHS VCR
    Great SVCR.
    Bad stuff:
Like all SVHS VCRs other VHS decks cannot read the tape.
Does not do "auto commercial advance".

It worked great for time shifting until I got TIVO.It has a much better picture than standard VHS. I planned on dubbing some tapes but never got around to it. This is one of three SVHS VCRs that sit.
It will change channels on your cable box and is great for editing and very easy to program. I did run some of my Hi8 camcorder tapes out to it until I found my friends could not read the tape. All my VCRs are SVSH so now I just buy more 8 mm tapes and use the camcorder to play them.
Everything is so integrated it feels like an empty plastic box but works
    Feature list:
With high resolution Super VHS and VHS recording, VCR Plus+, Child Lock, Insert Editing with Flying Erase Head, Audio Dubbing, and Express Programming features, the JVC model HR-S5900U offers just what every TV fanatic needs. A front S-Video input simplifies connecting a camcorder, and special A/V Compu Link provides one-touch operation with matching JVC components. ... Read more

    Aiwa In-Dash CD/MP3 Player (CDC-MP32)

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful measuring stick for MP3 car stereos.
After doing careful research, I settled on the Aiwa CDC-MP32 unit for my wife's car.My wife's sister worked for Aiwa, so I got a fairly soliod deal on it; price aside, this unit offered some essential features: displayed ID3v1 tags, handled CD-R and CD-RW discs, and provided an input jack for direct connection of any device (no more car kits!)

After installation and a full two years of product testing, I can really write the definitive review.Too bad you have to search high and low for these: Aiwa was subsumed by Sony last year.

The unit plays MP3s with surprising clarity and volume. The trick to any MP3 playback on any device is to first normalize the volume levels, then decide on a bitrate/ sampling combination.

Without delving into much technical essay, if you have tins ears then 44Hz stereo with 128kbps sampling is more than adequate. If you like a little more fidelity and you are certain you normalized volume, then 44Hz stereo with 192kbps will be your bottom limit.Anything at 256 or higher really requires a top-end system to appreciate.Keep in mind, this is a car stereo.

The display is bright, clear, supplies you with some color options if you like, but more importantly, it will scroll your ID3v1 tags. These tags can indicate the artist, title, and album you're hearing. It doesn't support ID3v2 tags (more information possible), but then again this is four year-old technology and that's light-years in electronics. The tag scrolling is clear and a decent rate.

The "random" function is sometimes prescient, sometimes stuck on a genre. Some days it'll know the right song to follow, and I'll swear it read my mind.Other times, it will insist I need to hear four Donna Summer songs in a row (don't ask, it's my wife's car).It makes me laugh, so that's actually kinda cool.

I don't really like the flip-down face, because I live in a tough town and detachable faces are safer (read: easier to keep).Sometimes the unit will briefly flake: the wife had a bad couple days when the face refused to come back, but it was stuck on a very loud Spanish-language station (again, it's the wife's car and she's Brazilian). The fix was kinda simple but unfortunate: pull the fuse for the radio, start the car, shutoff the car, replace the fuse. You lose your presets and you have to get rid of the default scrolling, but it beats very loud Merengue songs while driving to work.

The remote was useless. It's wireless, swell, but the attachment was worthless for actually attaching it to the steering wheel. It lasted a week.Besides, the wife never used the remote, so no loss there.

After two years, it plays MP3s better than my Sony portable CD player, scrolls the tags so I can read it at night, and pumps considerable volume.AM/FM reception is about what I'd expect, with FM tuning in rather well and AM somewhat spotty depending on the station. It plays pressed-CDs as well, and it'll decode CD-TEXT if your CD is so equipped. That's actually kinda nice.

In all, this unit should be a measuring stick for anyone looking. If you can score one of these lightly used, do it.It's been reliable for us, aside from the few glitches, and it delivers what you'd expect.

1-0 out of 5 stars I will never buy an Aiwa again
I bought the Aiwa CDC-MP32 five months ago.For the first two months I was satisfied with its performance, until that really "cool" retractable faceplate FELL OFF, left dangling by only a flex cable.Luckily it was still under warrantee and I shipped it to a local service center for repair.

It's been ten weeks since I shipped them the broken stereo, and I still don't have the unit back. That's ten weeks commuting to and from work in total silence (I've really improved my whistling skills).I called the repair shop and I called customer service to complain but nobody seems to care.I talked to someone at the repair shop today and they said it will probably be another week, but I'm tired of hearing that.I registered a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and while I was on their web site I noticed that Aiwa has an "unsatisfactory" rating. At this point I am so fed up I don't want the unit back I just want a refund.I left a couple of voice messages with my Aiwa customer service rep (and a fax) saying I want my money back, but they won't even acknowledge my request. They just keep saying it will be fixed soon.So if you're thinking about buying this product definitely get the longest extended warrantee offered.

While it was working I only had one small gripe, and that was with the remote control you strap to the steering wheel. At first I thought it was a great idea, but it kept falling off the strap when I pressed the buttons. Also, since it uses IR for a signal it has to be almost perfectly lined up with the main stereo unit - so it won't work if you are turning the steering wheel (even a little bit).Other than that, I was satisfied with most of the other features of the stereo (while I had it).

4-0 out of 5 stars Umm...... I take, well...most of what I said back.
Yesterday, I wrote a review of this unit after having had it in my car for about three weeks, saying that it was a pretty good unit for the money but that I resented enormously the fact that I couldn't get rid of the scrolling advert running across the display. An hour later I got into my car and figured out how to get rid of it. So I retract utterly my erroneous comments about the unit itself, and substitute a minor point about the inadequate manual that came with it, which most definitely does not indicate how to get rid of the ad. (You do it by holding down the "dis" button for about two seconds until it beeps, after which it will stay on the display you have selected without defaulting back to the rolling ad).

Sorry Aiwa. It's great unit after all. ... Read more
