Philips HDR212 TiVo 20 Hour Digital Video Recorder Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (28)
The funniest thing about having Tivo is that it changes your television conversations with others... I might tell someone about a cool new show (something Tivo selected FOR me that I wound up liking, for example), and the person will ask, "What channel is it on?" I have no clue. "Well, WHEN is it on?" No idea.Tivo takes care of everything!I watch WHAT I want WHEN I want.Channels... times... superfluous! Tivo takes EVERY SINGLE responsibility or burden off of you, the television watcher.Cliched as it may sound, Tivo really is "TV Your Way!"It's easier than a VCR with better quality, control, and versatility... I can certainly understand why the media isn't advertising it (have I MENTIONED that I haven't watched a TV commercial in TWO YEARS?), but I can't understand anyone not having this in his or her home. It streamlines your television viewing, and saves you time, turning television into an active and dynamic pasttime, instead of the modern-day opiate of the masses.Sound good to you?If you get it, I cannot imagine you regretting it!
My Philips TiVo 20 hour Tivo was working great for about four or five hours until the hard drive started acting up.Now the Hard drive seems to be messed up some how and all I can see now is a bunch of lines and blank screen. Now I have to go through the trouble of getting it fixed. This SUCKS because I just spent $150.00 for it and now the stupid thing won't work!

Philips DSR6000R DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service Average Customer Review: Electronics (28 November, 2000) list price: $299.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review While you probably have one or more personal computers and may own a personal digital assistant, you might not know about personal digital video recorders, or DVRs. Well, all that's about to change, because DVRs are reshaping TV in a big way. At their most basic, DVRs are glorified VCRs, but instead of storing audio and video on magnetic tape, they digitally record and store TV programs onto a hard disk drive, like a computer (but with much better resolution than those video clips that people sometimes send as e-mail attachments). The Philips DSR6000 DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service represents a new generation of DVR, combining AV recording services with duty as a DIRECTV satellite receiver, delivering up to 225 channels and special pay-per-view programs. It also uses TiVo proprietary software and services, which it downloads over an analog phone line. The DSR6000 houses a massive, 40 GB hard drive that stores up to 35 hours of audio and video. You'll need a satellite dish to get started, in addition to your TV and the equipment supplied with the DSR6000. The DSR6000 is equipped with two satellite inputs, each compatible with DIRECTV. Only the first input is currently usable, but that's about to change. If you don't already have a DIRECTV satellite dish (as you would if you were upgrading from an older DIRECTV receiver or buying the DSR6000 for use in another room), we strongly recommend you purchase a DIRECTV satellite dish with dual LNB capability. Dual LNB simply refers to the number of different signals a dish can send to your audio-video equipment. A dual LNB dish has two jacks or connectors inside the arm extending from the dish, while a single LNB, for example, has just one. If you currently have a single LNB DIRECTV dish and want access to these changes as soon as they become available, an authorized installer can upgrade your dish (please call DIRECTV for more information at 1-800-347-3288 or visit them online at www.directv.com). If you don't know what LNB format you have, we recommend checking with an authorized installer, as you can't determine the LNB format by counting the number of arms pointing back to the dish. You'll also need an analog phone jack to receive TiVo's services and to transfer data to the DSR6000. A 50-foot RJ-11 phone cord and telephone line splitter are included, so the receiver can share a single wall jack with a phone, if needed. The DSR6000 automatically makes a daily call to TiVo at no cost to you. This call won't interrupt your phone calls or Internet connection, and the receiver is compatible with Call Waiting, Voice Messaging, and Caller ID. However, it's important to note that the DSR6000 must never be connected to a digital PBX phone system. Doing so may permanently damage the modem. It also voids your warranty. Out of the box and in your hands, you'll immediately notice the substantial weight of the DSR6000; it's clearly built for performance. A robust "jack pack" lets you connect your TV and a range of audio-video components with this receiver, including a VCR, DVD player, and/or a game center. Audio-video connections include an S-video output (cable supplied) and an optical digital-audio output (cable not included) for state-of-the-art video and audio. Two analog-audio stereo and composite-video outputs (cables supplied) offer extended connectivity with conventional equipment, while infrared (IR) and serial outputs are offered for future upgrades. An RF (CATV) output with channel switch (cable included) and a VHF/UHF input (for an antenna or an older VCR) complete the package. Worried that the resolution of the TiVo storage will compromise the quality of your recordings? Don't be. Unlike a VCR, the DSR6000 gives you exactly what you put in. That's because the video signal from DIRECTV is digital, allowing the DSR6000 to write the satellite signal's ones and zeros directly to its hard drive. In addition, the DSR6000--like DIRECTV--is Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic compatible so you can enjoy your TV in surround sound when you route the audio output to your surround receiver. The Philips DSR6000 also offers software programming and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). It's the first DVR to bring TiVo Version 2.0 software to the public, offering several improvements over previous releases, such as enhanced search features that can do keyword program searches, and an overtime scheduler that lets you add a buffer to the end of your recording--so you don't miss recording the play of the century just because it occurred in overtime. Installation is a snap; the DSR6000's onscreen menus walk you through the process. Philips includes most of the accessories needed, along with a user-friendly suite of manuals. In addition, we tried out the customer support on three occasions during peak hours. Our wait never exceeded 60 seconds, and the Philips service solutions group on the other end of the phone was informed and helpful. A DVR like the DSR6000 gives you unparalleled control over your viewing. First off, any time you're watching TV, a 30-minute recording buffer is always in action, letting you pause live TV--the image freezes when you hit pause, but the hard disk keeps recording. When you resume playback, the recording now stored on the hard disk picks up where you left off. So if the phone rings or the kids can't wait, you won't miss a moment of your show. You can pick up right where you left-off, skip the commercials that ran while you were with your family, and you may even end up finishing the program on schedule. For sports fans, nothing rivals instant replay of live TV. Say you just watched an incredible triple play. With TiVo, you don't have to wait for the network's replay. Just replay it on the DSR6000. You can watch in slow motion or frame-by-frame and still catch up to the network's replay. Both TiVo and DIRECTV offer several convenient features--status bars, channel banners, programming schedules, Wish Lists, recording archives, and more--that make TV watching easier than ever. And you can toggle between either system's features, using those you like best. TiVo includes a search feature that lets you find programming based on theme, actor, time, date, etc. A programmable parental lock lets you guide your child's TV viewing. A clever thumbs-up/thumbs-down feature can track your viewing likes and dislikes. TiVo uses this data to search out and recommend new programs that you might enjoy. You can record a lot of programs on the DSR6000's hard drive. TiVo manages these in a storage cache called Now Playing. You can select a recording from Now Playing and watch it, even if it's recording. You can also opt for the Season Pass feature and record an entire TV series. You can even set TiVo to record first-run shows only, ignoring the repeats. As the DSR6000's disk space fills, TiVo helps you manage it. DIRECTV delivers a staggering range of program offerings into your home--up to 225 channels including music channels. Its video quality is equally outstanding. DIRECTV displays program schedules 14 days in advance, which is great for planning recording time or if you travel a lot. If an alternative audio track is available, DIRECTV also lets you listen to both TV programs and movies in other languages. Among the best features of both DIRECTV and TiVo are their special programs. DIRECTV offers DIRECT TICKET, pay-per-view programming that you'll find nowhere else. TiVo offers its own television magazine called Tivolution, featuring one-of-a kind interviews, movie reviews, and special previews, as well as TiVo Takes with tips and programming updates for viewers. Philips's DSR6000 DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service not only reshapes your TV viewing, it rethinks it, ultimately letting you create your own network. --Heidi Wartelle ... Maxtor K0198000H 5400 RPM 80 GB Hard Drive Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $149.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (2)
The Maxtor drive was recommended to me[....]P>I had never installed a hard drive in my life, but after surfing different Mac sites, I saw photos that showed how simple it was. The drive works great and I had to make absolutely no modifications to the jumpers... literal plug-n-play and boot-up.I kept the internal 20gig and put this 80gig drive on top in the slave drive rack. I connected the ribbon cable and power connector, closed the panel and started up the Mac. The drive didn't show up because it hadn't been initialized. I used Mac Drive Setup (all Macs should have a copy of this installed by default on the internal Hard Drive... there will also be a copy on your System CD) to initialize and partition the new drive which took less than 1 minute. My less than perfect rating is due to the total absence of Mac-related documentation with this drive. The box it comes in has both the Windows and Macintosh symbols/trade markers, showing that the drive is compatible with both platforms. The drive comes in an electrostatic bag and is well packed in heavy foam rubber and comes with a mounting bracket to make this drive fit in 5.25" drive bays in older PCs. It also ships with an extra ribbon cable and 8 screws. In addition, it ships with a floppy disc and a CD-ROM. The instructions tell you that you will find all the information you need on the CD. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. If someone has a failed hard drive (not just adding a 2nd drive like I was doing), it is impossible for them to use the CD or do anything. Still, the tiny printed sheet inside the box implied that all jumper settings, etc. would be on the CD-ROM. I loaded the CD in my Mac, and wouldn't you know it, not one Mac-compatible file on the whole disc. I threw caution to the wind and plugged everything together as-is and it worked on the first try. I'm not sure whether this was solely due to the simplicity of the Mac or because of superior settings on the Maxtor drive, but either way, I am very pleased to now have space enough to use Photoshop and store more mp3 files. Canon EOS D30 3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $3,499.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Canon EOS D30 is one of the few available interchangeable-lens digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras. It's designed to offer the performance and picture quality of a film-based SLR with the convenience and features of a digital camera. Based on Canon's EOS line of film cameras, the D30 is compatible with all EOS-related equipment, including EF lenses and EX-series Speedlite flashes. This model is targeted at "prosumers" (serious consumers and some professionals), and its EOS compatibility makes it a natural choice for people who already own Canon equipment. If you're accustomed to using a Canon SLR, the D30's features and controls will be familiar. As with film models, the shutter speed, aperture, and focus can all be set manually or automatically. White balance can also be adjusted, either by selecting a preset value or by shooting and storing a reference image. Unlike most digital cameras, the traditional optical viewfinder is the only way to frame your shots; the 1.8-inch LCD monitor on the back of the camera is for perusing images and adjusting settings only. One bonus of this arrangement is that the D30 is always ready to take pictures; you don't have to worry about changing modes as you must on most digital cameras. The introduction of the D30 also marks the first use of a CMOS sensor in a multimegapixel digital camera. Because CMOS sensors are less expensive, use less power, and are easier to manufacture than the traditional CCD sensors found on most cameras, there are high hopes that CMOS will be the primary sensor technology for the super-high resolution digital cameras of tomorrow. Until now, however, CMOS sensors have offered inferior results when compared to CCD, so they've been found primarily in entry-level and toy digital cameras. Canon seems to have solved the image-quality problem by custom designing the CMOS chip in the D30, and the company claims that their sensor offers better performance than most CCD sensors. Images are stored on Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards, including the IBM Microdrive. By default, files are recorded in JPEG format, though there are also settings for TIFF and RAW recording. TIFF is the most common lossless recording format, and TIFF images can be viewed and edited with virtually any photo editing software. TIFF files provide the highest-quality images, but at a price: a single D30 image occupies nearly 10 MB of memory. RAW, in contrast, is a newer format that's not recognized by as many photo-editing software packages, though Canon provides a plug-in to let Adobe Photoshop users directly import RAW files, and also includes software that lets you convert RAW files to TIFF files on your computer. Like TIFF, RAW is a lossless format, yet RAW files are only about one-third the size of TIFFs. Because the RAW image comes directly from the sensor and has received less in-camera processing than other file formats, it also offers experienced users more image-correction options. A final note about the EOS D30. The CMOS sensor is smaller than a 35mm negative, which means that when you take a picture, the focal length of the lens you are using is greater. For example, if you took a picture using a lens with a 28mm focal length, the actual focal length would be 1.6x greater, or 45mm. If you're currently shooting with a Canon SLR, this makes your zoom lenses even more powerful, but it also means that you'll need to pick up a wide-angle lens or wide-angle converter to regain the range of focal lengths you have with film. --Michael Lewis and Shane Burnett Pros:

Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $650.99 -- our price: $310.94 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens has multiple moving lens groups that enhance image quality and make the whole system more compact and lightweight. This lens uses an ultrasonic focusing motor (USM) that gives you silent, high-speed autofocusing. Canon eliminated all the mechanical couplings in this lens and added a custom-designed autofocus motor as well as a microprocessor. Built into the system is a replica aspherical lens element that minimizes optical distortions to give you sharp images. The flare-cutting diaphragm helps the lens produce a high-contrast image, even in tough lighting. Its high zoom ratio of 3.5x allows you to take tighter shots of your subjects. It's fully compatible with all EOS cameras. ... Read more Features Reviews (4)
- it has bigger light-factor (3.5-4.0 vs 4.0-5.6 in the low-class lenses). This gives you more possibilities, for instance to use faster shutter speeds or to decrease the depth-of-fild for special effects) - the first (outer) lens doesn't spin what gives you an opportunity to use square filters; using a poliriser becomes as easy as any other filter. - the USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) gives you a really super speed of focusing and completely silent engine. You'll catch the fastest actions and nothing will distrub your object! These are the most important and useful features of the lens. I should also admit, that the focal distance of this lens is almost ideal for everyday photography, because gives you an opportunity to shoot from landscapes (~24-50mm) to portraiture (~50-85mm) with an equal simplicity and quality.

The box has quite complete description of product's feature yet it is very informative. I was so surprised that it was so easy to download songs from my mp3 collection in my PC to my nex II. It is as easy as 1,2,3. Since it shows as removable device, all I have to do is drag songs I want to download from local disc to the device in windows explorer environment, no hassle for downloading any software to my computer. Isn't it great..???? The sound quality is great, I never expected mp3 file can be heard so good. There are 5 options to choose sound mode that makes it perfect to be used for playing different kind of music. It also has user option so I can set the equalizer for the sound that I really want. I like the sound that is more bass and little midrange, and unbelievable it works !!! it's like hear from the real CD player. The last thing, I like it because it uses compact flash memory so I can use the one from my digital camera. Isn't it fantastic ? one compact flash for 2 kind of electronic devices?? Bose Acoustimass 6 Series II Home Theater Speaker System (Black) Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Acoustimass 6 Series II home theater speaker system uses patented Bose technology to bring lifelike sound to your stereo or multichannel audio components. The Acoustimass 6 speaker system is small enough to blend effortlessly with any decor, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to bring large sound to small rooms. The Acoustimass 6 system is compatible with Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS, DVD-Audio, and SACD program material, so long as your receiver provides a means of folding the LFE (low-frequency effects) ".1" signal into the front left/right speaker signals. Hookup couldn't be easier using the system's color-coded speaker cables. All 5 primary channels from your receiver--front left, center, right, and left/right surround--plug directly into the rear panel of the system's passive Acoustimass module, which derives rich, full-bodied bass from the front left/right signals and passes each audio signal to its appropriate corresponding cube speaker. The system's 5 Virtually Invisible cube speakers deliver vivid and lifelike music and movie sound. Just 3 inches square, these small speakers faithfully reproduce the clarity and natural sound of a live performance. Accessory mounting options let you mount each small cube speaker to your walls or display them elegantly on speaker stands (using optional wall mounts or speaker stands). Bose recommends placing the Acoustimass module at the same end of the room as your television. The cube speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion if any of them is placed on or near your television. To prevent interference from the Acoustimass module, keep it at least 2 feet from the TV. What's in the Box Features Reviews (3)
The setup instructions are very good, and the single big cable with all the wires for the receiver made hookup in the entertainment unit much easier. Aiwa In-Dash CD/MP3 Player (CDC-MP32) Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (4)
After installation and a full two years of product testing, I can really write the definitive review.Too bad you have to search high and low for these: Aiwa was subsumed by Sony last year. The unit plays MP3s with surprising clarity and volume. The trick to any MP3 playback on any device is to first normalize the volume levels, then decide on a bitrate/ sampling combination. Without delving into much technical essay, if you have tins ears then 44Hz stereo with 128kbps sampling is more than adequate. If you like a little more fidelity and you are certain you normalized volume, then 44Hz stereo with 192kbps will be your bottom limit.Anything at 256 or higher really requires a top-end system to appreciate.Keep in mind, this is a car stereo. The display is bright, clear, supplies you with some color options if you like, but more importantly, it will scroll your ID3v1 tags. These tags can indicate the artist, title, and album you're hearing. It doesn't support ID3v2 tags (more information possible), but then again this is four year-old technology and that's light-years in electronics. The tag scrolling is clear and a decent rate. The "random" function is sometimes prescient, sometimes stuck on a genre. Some days it'll know the right song to follow, and I'll swear it read my mind.Other times, it will insist I need to hear four Donna Summer songs in a row (don't ask, it's my wife's car).It makes me laugh, so that's actually kinda cool. I don't really like the flip-down face, because I live in a tough town and detachable faces are safer (read: easier to keep).Sometimes the unit will briefly flake: the wife had a bad couple days when the face refused to come back, but it was stuck on a very loud Spanish-language station (again, it's the wife's car and she's Brazilian). The fix was kinda simple but unfortunate: pull the fuse for the radio, start the car, shutoff the car, replace the fuse. You lose your presets and you have to get rid of the default scrolling, but it beats very loud Merengue songs while driving to work. The remote was useless. It's wireless, swell, but the attachment was worthless for actually attaching it to the steering wheel. It lasted a week.Besides, the wife never used the remote, so no loss there. After two years, it plays MP3s better than my Sony portable CD player, scrolls the tags so I can read it at night, and pumps considerable volume.AM/FM reception is about what I'd expect, with FM tuning in rather well and AM somewhat spotty depending on the station. It plays pressed-CDs as well, and it'll decode CD-TEXT if your CD is so equipped. That's actually kinda nice. In all, this unit should be a measuring stick for anyone looking. If you can score one of these lightly used, do it.It's been reliable for us, aside from the few glitches, and it delivers what you'd expect.
It's been ten weeks since I shipped them the broken stereo, and I still don't have the unit back. That's ten weeks commuting to and from work in total silence (I've really improved my whistling skills).I called the repair shop and I called customer service to complain but nobody seems to care.I talked to someone at the repair shop today and they said it will probably be another week, but I'm tired of hearing that.I registered a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and while I was on their web site I noticed that Aiwa has an "unsatisfactory" rating. At this point I am so fed up I don't want the unit back I just want a refund.I left a couple of voice messages with my Aiwa customer service rep (and a fax) saying I want my money back, but they won't even acknowledge my request. They just keep saying it will be fixed soon.So if you're thinking about buying this product definitely get the longest extended warrantee offered. While it was working I only had one small gripe, and that was with the remote control you strap to the steering wheel. At first I thought it was a great idea, but it kept falling off the strap when I pressed the buttons. Also, since it uses IR for a signal it has to be almost perfectly lined up with the main stereo unit - so it won't work if you are turning the steering wheel (even a little bit).Other than that, I was satisfied with most of the other features of the stereo (while I had it).
Sorry Aiwa. It's great unit after all. ... Read more Asin: B000068GEM |
