    Editorial Review

Like moths to a flame, great actors gravitate to the singular genius of playwright-screenwriter David Mamet, who updated his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for this all-star screen adaptation. The material is not inherently cinematic, so the movie's greatest asset is Mamet's peerless dialogue and the assembly of a once-in-a-lifetime cast led by Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Alec Baldwin (the last in a role Mamet created especially for the film). Often regarded as a critique of the Reagan administration's impact on the American economy, the play and film focus on a competitive group of real estate salesmen who've gone from feast to famine in a market gone cold. When an executive "motivator" (Alec Baldwin) demands a sales contest among the agents in the cramped office, the stakes are critically high: any agent who fails to meet his quota of sales "leads" (i.e., potential buyers) will lose his job. This intense ultimatum is a boon for the office superstar (Pacino), but a once-successful salesman (Lemmon) now finds himself clinging nervously to faded glory. Political and personal rivalries erupt under pressure when the other agents (Alan Arkin, Ed Harris) suspect the office manager (Kevin Spacey) of foul play. This cauldron of anxiety, tension, and sheer desperation provides fertile soil for Mamet's scathingly rich dialogue, which is like rocket fuel for some of the greatest actors of our time. Pacino won an Oscar nomination for his volatile performance, but it's Lemmon who's the standout, doing some of the best work of his distinguished career. Director James Foley shapes Mamet's play into a stylish, intensely focused film that will stand for decades as a testament to its brilliant writer and cast. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent acting and script, cussing is poetry
The other day I was discussing salespeople with a friend and we determined that nobody likes being sold anything. Coincidental, then, that I saw Glengarry Glen Ross that night, as the film seems to support our hypothesis, but it adds another dimension to it: the salespeople themselves may not necessarily even like selling anything. In fact, the men in this movie are selling for survival; if they don't sell, they don't eat.

Near the beginning of the film, a man from the downtown office (Alec Baldwin) offers encouragement to three salesmen who aren't meeting their quotas by way of verbal abuse. First prize is a brand new Cadillac, second prize is a set of steak knives, and third prize is the door: you're fired. The men are selling real estate, using the weak leads handed down to them from above. There is Shelley Levene (Jack Lemmon), nicknamed The Machine for his past sales record, who has hit a wall in his career and can't seem to close any more sales. He desperately needs to keep his job to pay medical bills for his wife. Dave Moss (Ed Harris) is fed up with all of the bureaucracy, and doesn't feel people should be treated this way--and they shouldn't. George Aaronow (Alan Arkin) isn't the sharpest tool in the drawer, and tends to be swayed by his colleagues.

All three of these men are jealous of the only guy making any sales lately, Ricky Roma (Al Pacino). Dave is convinced that the rest of them would be doing just as well if they were getting the good leads that he is, but according to their by-the-book company-pleasing manager John Williamson (Kevin Spacey), only closers are worthy of the good leads--the Glengarry leads. Dave comes up with a plan to break into the office, steal the leads, and sell them to the competitor across the street, and tries to convince George to do the dirty work, and as a reward, he can take a cut of the pay and have a job with the competitor. We don't see the actual robbery, though--only the aftermath--and it's not clear who exactly did what. Everyone's got their motives, but who had the guts to do it?

Glengarry Glen Ross was written by David Mamet based on his stage play of the same name, and it must have been an actor's paradise. There are no special effects, hardly any sets at all, and some fantastic dialogue, which flows with the cadence that only Mamet can produce. Nobody else can write profanity with such poetry. Director James Foley doesn't intrude on his actors, which is the perfect way to deal with this talk-heavy picture. The acting is excellent all around, especially by screen legend Jack Lemmon, though nobody is overshadowed by anybody else.

The only fault I found with the film was the abrupt ending, but to go into any more detail would be a crime against anybody who hasn't seen the film. The subject matter is fascinating, as most of us have only seen salesmen when they're being phonies. Here they are given personalities, and are struggling with not only their jobs, but with their lives, and they live in such a sheltered world that they can't even see the opportunities that might be available outside of this bubble. It's a really foolish idea to steal from the place you have to go to every day, but if you don't know any better, it makes perfect sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd prize: a set of steak knives.3rd prize: your fired!
"The man from downtown" comes and informs the sales staff "we're adding something special to this month's sales promotion.First prize, a cadillac convertable.Second prize is a set of steak knives.Third prize is you're fired!
The pressure is on--how far would _you_ go to preserve your job?

This movie is based on a play which is a riviting, penetrating study of the Male psychie as expressed in the workplace.Men are front and center--they are working, drinking, schmoozing--and selling. The part women figure in this play only by the impact they have on the men--the sick daughter, the wife who answered the wrong sales ad. Your manhood is directly proportional to your sales volume, so A.B.C. --Always Be Closing!

How ironic then is the line Al Pacino delivers towards the end of the movie: "We're not living in a world of men. We're living in a world of clock-watchers and office holders."

This is one of those movies you can watch over and over, savoring the dialog and marveling over the excellent performances.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great flick - awesome performances
Okay, as others have said, this is a great flick, and a stunning cast. But I'm not sure there's any such thing as an "actor's movie" as others have said - these guys would be sitting around with nothing to do if not for Mamet's trademark staccato dialogue.

Speaking of which, IMDB notes that the word f*ck and its derivatives are uttered 138 times in the course of this movie... so much, in fact, that during filming the actors referred to the movie as "Death of a F*cking Salesman."

Jack Lemmon was a great actor who tended to get a little over the top at the end of the film - and he doesn't disappoint here, if that's what you're looking for.And Pacino LIVES over the top - this is another one of those films where he treats his performance as if it's a great big freakin' joke, just between him and his audience. But for my money, the standout performance in this film is Kevin Spacey's.His performance is as tightly controlled- perhaps claustrophobic is a better word - in this as in "American Beauty."

Folks who like this movie should check out two of Mamet's best:The Spanish Prisoner and The Winslow Boy (an early 20th century play Mamet adapted for the screen, and directed). ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Fine-tuning the white-knuckled car chase formula of its predecessor,Driver 2 features more of the same high-speed, inner-city vehicularmayhem, and casts players once again as Tanner, a hard-boiled undercover copwho's posing as a badass getaway driver--this time, to stop an international mobwar.

With computer-animated cinematic sequences doing the lion's share of thestorytelling, players must guide Tanner through more than 40 action-packedmissions in four different city settings, this time on foot--which primarilyallows Tanner to carjack other vehicles--as well as behind the wheel.

While it can be of a lot of fun to play, Driver 2 is no joy ride. Themissions can be quite unforgiving and require many restarts to complete, and thecops are quite determined--even at the "Easy" setting. Also, the game's coarse, choppy 3-D graphics often get in the way of things, with slowdowns disruptingthe game's pace, and buildings and such popping up out of nowhere. --JoeHon

    Pros:

    • Drive like a bat out of hell in four different city settings
    • Action now takes place on foot, as well as behind the wheel
    • One- and two-player minigames add replay value
    • "Film director" option lets players edit their own car-chase sequences
    Cons:
    • Missions can be quite unforgiving--requiring many restarts to complete
    • Coarse, choppy 3-D graphics make gameplay more difficult than it needs to be

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY WORTHY TITLE
This is a fun game, and realistic too, also this game improves from Driver 1 instead of the same cop cars in the same cities you get different ones(I.E. Chicago has white-and-blue cop cars that go fast and have good endurance. And Havana has big black-and-white cop cars that r big with one siren and u can easily lose the cops in this city.) And the cities have different cars and styles.GRAPHICS:3/5:The graphics have actually dropped from the Driver 1,b-cos the cars look more blocky but you still get the realistic car effects.SOUND:5/5:The sound ain`t ennoying to me the background music is kind of cool but i am so used to being in Chicago that the music always go`s in to my head when thinking/playing Driver 2,the music in Havana sounds more like action the damaging effects also sound realistic.THE STORY:5/5:(The story isn`t any thing like Driver 1 but the story seems to have also continue into Driver 3)The story is about the criminals cocky bookkeeper cuts a deal with his greatest rival but Soloman Caine and his hired Hitman,Jericho go`s in the pub they are in,called The Red Driver in an attempt to kill Lenny but misses him and he escapes but they then kill the Brazzilian Gangster, which is tooken into a Forensic lab to investigate.and then Tanner(The Charictor u play) then has to meet his partner Tobias Jones so they can follow a Witness, who seen the deal that went on but when they catch him instead of treating him mannerly they take him hostage until he spits out imfo and the story begins.GAMEPLAY:4/5: The gameplay is very fun,you get to exit your car and steal another or walk around and sit down or you can stay in your car and make a mini movie by first getting the law on your tail and go do some stunts like skids,Donuts and go up ramps(Especially the lift bridge in Chicago) and then when you wreck yourself, replay it, and see your actions in Cinematic view and then use the fabulus "Film Director"(A Feature that was in troduced in the first Driver, but i forgot to mention it in my other review) to make your own movies(I am talking about the cool Take A Ride mode).the only down falls are is that there are many glitches such as ppl walk thru buildings and once the police set Tanner up i seen a police car so i decided to follow it,driving like the other, good guys so i could attempt to steal it but when he turned the corner and i followed him there was auto-matic 77% felony and a road block of police cars!.CYA Lata

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good Game
"Driver 2" is one of the best Playstation (1) games I've ever played. From time to time, I wanna flip back from the PS2 to the original, and this is usually the game of choice when I do. There's a really clever yet easy to follow storyline, which grips you in from the momment you start, and puts you in the mindframe that you can't put down the controller until you've done what you're attempting. Graphically, it's not the greatest thing ever created, but from a gameplay point of view it's pretty stunning.

Here's the plot - A US crimelord's money man cuts a deal with his greatest rival, a Brazilian gangster, meaning that violence is sure to ignite both American continents. That's where you come in. You're Tanner. The Driver. You have to drive your way through cities, taking part in a helluva lot of in car and out of car action to get your jobs done. There's really no way to describe how addictive this game is, you just have to play it. 4.5 stars.

    Editorial Review

Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honestly, Was This Collection Really Necessary?
Before I start, I would like to state the only reason I am giving this cd a five star rating is that it's because it is quite possibly the finest rock and pop music ever written. However, if I were to judge this cd on quauntity rather than quality, this would be a one star cd.

"The Beatles 1" is a collection of all 20 of their American singles as well as seven that went to number one in Britain. While it's no lie that these songs are classics, but really, exactly how many times does this stuff have to be rereleased before everyone is tired of The Beatles?

The burning question is, why don't The Beatles have their own boxed set? I mean, seriously, they are the most important band that ever existed, and yet they haven't gottent their own seven or even eight disc best of with all their hits and the classics that weren't. That's a sin. It would probably take years to put together, but for The Beatles, it would be worth it.

My advice is to only purchase "The Beatles 1" is if you're a beginning fan. Other than that, this cd is not necessary in the least.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEATLES ROCK
When my mom got this CD for her birthday I totally wasn't interested. But when I heard some of the various songs I dicided to borrow it for awhile. It is awsome!! Each song seems to be it's own, no song alike. Although it does't have some songs like "St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Clud Band", it is still worth listening to. Plus inside there is a little book that shows the year each song came out and the record covers for them. And one last thing, on the internet there is a 1# CD site that has audio and video of the beatles playing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A legacy in literary form
A friend of mine got me this book for Christmas in 2000. This was an addition to my Beatles memorabilia(I got the 3 double-disc Anthology CD's and the eight-volume VHS tapes between 1995 and 1997 respectively). This "coffee table" book was authored by all four Beatles Paul McCartney,Richard "Ringo Starr" Starkey, the late John Lennon and the late George Harrison(Harrison was alive when this book went to press and came to bookstores). All four Beatles give their own life histories through the 1970 disbanding. Lennon tells about the death of his mother Julia who was run over by an intoxicated off-duty policeman. Lennon wrote several odes to her, those being entitled JULIA,MOTHER and MY MUMMY'S DEAD. The latter two songs were Lennon's post-Beatles compositions both appearing on PLASTIC ONO BAND,released in late 1970. This book is a revision and update of the 1964 Capitol Records album THE BEATLES STORY. Many people over the years have written books about the Beatles legacy but this item is the ultimate one. Lennon and McCartney first met in 1957 when Lennon was 17 and McCartney was 15. McCartney brought a few buddies to see John's band called The Quarrymen. After the concert,John and Paul had a nice get-acquainted chat and became fast friends. Paul joined the Quarrymen and a short time later,he recruited Harrison. These Liverpool,England lads always loved American Rock 'n Roll. McCartney was 14 when his mother passed away. TBS did not say how she died. McCartney's dad was a cotton salesman. Harrison came up the Beatles' legendary "mop-top" hairstyle. He recalled in an interview that one day when he and the other Beatles were swimming, they emerged from the pool with their hair over their foreheads. They decided they liked it,and it has remained. Ringo joined the Beatles following the ousting of Pete Best. Best didn't seem to be doing a great drumming job, according to John,Paul and George. Naturally mournful-faced Ringo was previously drumming for Rory Storme & The Hurricanes. The oldest Beatle, three months Lennon's senior, was called Ringo because of his passion for wearing lots of rings(four on each hand). Illness forced Ringo to drop out of school as a child(he had been in and out a few times). Ringo sought employment at an engineering company before his drumming career. In 1958,18-year-old Ringo received his first drum kit that Christmas. He's still drumming today although he sings more often. Ringo always loved to sing during the Beatles' performances, but preferred to leave the vocal work to his three fellow Beatles. Pre-Beatles,Harrison had a short-lived job as an electrician. He quit because he "kept blowing everything up". Lennon, who came up with "Beatles",caused controversy in 1966,telling a concert audience that the band was "more popular than Jesus Christ". The outrageous comment led to a bonfire in Alabama. Fans placed their Beatles memorabilia into the fire. This also led to the band abandoning touring and spending their business time in the studio. Harrison developed in interest in Indian music and culture. You can hear Harrison playing the sitar on songs like NORWEGIAN WOOD(THIS BIRD HAS FLOWN) and WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU. While recording the LET IT BE album in January 1969,the band gave a free concert atop the Abbey Road Studios roof. You can see a clip of it in the 1988 Warner Bros. documentary IMAGINE-THE DEFINITIVE PORTRAIT OF JOHN LENNON. What led to the Beatles' break-up was managerial and musical differences between Lennon and McCartney(the pair remained friends though). All four Beatles were already married so I guess we can say another reason why they broke up was because so they could spend more time with their wives. Lennon was already into his second marriage to Tokyo-born Yoko Ono. Lennon's first marriage to Cynthia Powell ended in 1968. That marriage brought Lennon's rock star son Julian who is now aged 42. Since the disbanding of the Beatles, all four members have pursued successful solo careers. I dedicate this item to the memories of Lennon, who was murdered in 1980 in New York City, where he last lived and Harrison, who succumbed to lung cancer in 2001.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Beatles fan
I do not believe it is necessary for me to go into all the detail that prior commentators have gone into. Let me just sum it up: This book is a must read for any Beatles fan. After all, it is about the Beatles, by the Beatles.Well written and full of previously unreleased photos and copies of memorobilia such as letters, posters, etc. However, there are two criticisms that I have:

First, the book's format leaves much to be desired. It is physically huge and heavy and not comfortable to handle. The print is very tiny and there is much printed language superimposed on photographs, letters, etc.I would have loved to sit down with this book to knock it off in two or three reading sessions, but alas, that is impossible, because the book is so physically uncomfortable to handle and an eyestrain to read.

Secondly, while the content itself is admirable, I believe someone who is not already a Beatles fan and who is not already somewhat knowledgeable about the Beatles (and there may be 4 or 5 people on the planet who fit that category) this book may not be a good introduction to the greatest band in history.I would suggest first reading the Hunter Davies biography of a similar biography before tackling this massive Anthology.

5-0 out of 5 stars couldn't have asked for a better book on the Beatles
To be honest, I have always liked the beatles music from as far back as I can remember late 60's. Anyway, in the mid. 90's when the anthology cd's came out and was on tv, I bought those and enjoyed them a lot.I just happened upon this book. I enjoy knowing the history of certain bands, and despite a few people saing you can read or have a hard time reading certain pages - it's not that big of a deal. You do have to take more time and read about 10 to 20 pages. Also how large the book is and how heavy. People will complain about anything. I like hardbound books best so thats what I got. If paperback doesn't bother you get that. One final complaint is that they brag and pat each other on the back - HELLO - I find the Beatles to be very modest considering how their music changed the world. Geat pictures, and great inside stories from the Beatles. Before reading the book I had doubts about reading a book in which the people involved write the book, because an outside view is also very good for certain reasons - I would recommend Shout, and I haven't read The Beatles ten years that changed the world, but the reviews are very good. However, you really need a great book on the Beatles by an outsider, and you need one geat book from the band and thats what you have. If you like the Beatles want to know the history - this is a wonderful book to get. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meade 773 Hard Carry Case for ETX-60 AT Review
This item should have come with the telescope. This is very necessary purchase. The ETX-70 fits perfect. The case has a pocket for everything. The only exception is the remote for the telescope. It's cord has a hard time finding it's own resting spot. Put a reusable tie wrap around it and everthings fine. See I'm being picky and I'm still satisfied. My only wish is that they would use a harder plastic on the outside case. Face it, everybody doesn't have the greatest backyard conditions and this allows you to travel. Don't forget to reset your location in your settings. Those planets and stars will be even more out of alignment. Even at the price you pay it still is very necessary.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced
    Functional, yes, but terribly overpriced.

A bit of pre-formed plastic plus a foam insert to hold the 'scope and some accesories. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I have it!
(...) The ETX 70 really likes dark skies (being a rich field refractor and all) and this is perfect for getting it there. Lots of nifty pockets for eyepieces (of all sizes if you use your imagination) for a flashlight, a bubble level, and (of course) the scope. They tell me you can even get the dew shield and the right angle finder in it. It's also great for storing the scope and carrying everything to the backyard. The case seems rather sturdy and, while nothing is completely kid-proof, it's kept the scope safe from little girls -- so far! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Claude Lemieux Was the MVP of Finals and nowin Dallas!
I must say that Claude Lemieux is the worlds luckiest man
when it comes to playing hockey and winning Stanley Cups.
He is the main reason that the Devils won in 1995. The history of Claude Lemieux is this-he won in 1986, 1995, 1996, and 2000.So, most likely while he is Dallas He could win another Cup to add to his Resume. It is rare for a hockey player to win the Stanley cup five times, six times, or even 7 times. But at the rate he is going he is sure to get them if he does not retire.
This is interesting. When the devils won in 1995, the year after they had lost because Claude was not there, and in 1996 he won it with Colorado. And it took 4 years to get the cup back for the Devils, but again Claude Lemieux was there again in New Jersey and won it for Larry Robinson. Dallas is a lucky team.
This video is good. You will like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Video
This video explains the Devils first run to the Stanley Cup championship over Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and finally Detroit to take hockey's ulimate prize. It talks how there run against the Rangers in 1994 was derailed and how they had a average season going into the playoff winning only 2 of 8 games or close to that.
