NFL's Greatest: Pro Football's Best Players, Teams, and Games by Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 August, 2000) list price: $30.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Who are your picks for the 100 greatest football players of all time? What about the 25 greatest teams and the 25 greatest games? Members of the ProFootball Hall of Fame Selection Committee have weighed in on the issue inNFL's Greatest. The esteemed committee has chosen the greatest players, teams, and games andthe 25 most important events in the history of the National Football League. Theroster is, unsurprisingly, impressive--even though the committee refrained fromindividual rankings, presenting the lists in alphabetical or chronologicalorder. They're all here, from Herb Adderley to Deacon Jones (who coined the term"sack"), from Sonny Jurgensen to Steve Young, from the 1929 Packers to the 1998Broncos, and from the November 28, 1929, game in which Ernie Nevins scored allof his team's points to help the Browns defeat the Bears 40-6 (the NFL's oldestrecord) to Super Bowl XXXIV, in which the Rams held off the Titans. Whether you agree or disagree with the selections, they make great fodder fordiscussion. NFL's Greatest is sure to find favor with football fans.--Sunny Delaney ... Read more Reviews (1)

Best Shots: The Greatest NFL Photography of the Century by Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 September, 1999) list price: $30.00 -- our price: $30.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Football lends itself to still photography. Photos freeze football's chaos, allowing the viewer to examine the details. Photos also catch the game's great moments: Johnny Unitas reaching back to throw in the 1958 championship game; Barry Sanders defying gravity as he changes directions to avoid a tackle; Muhsin Muhammad at full extension crossing the goal line, ball first. Best Shots: The Greatest NFL Photography of the Century celebrates both the players and the photographers--Al Messerschmidt, Michael Zagaris, and Tony Tomsic, to name a few--who captured them. Some of these Best Shots offer glimpses behind the scenes--Joe Montana gathering his thoughts before Super Bowl XXXII, George Halas celebrating with his Bears after beating the Redskins 73-0 in the 1940 NFL Championship game--while others depict the game's highs and its lows--John Elway's horsey grin upon winning his second straight Super Bowl; Y.A. Tittle, head bloodied and bowed, after yet another loss. With a foreword by Broadway Joe Namath (himself caught injured on the bench, sulking in a fur coat and sunglasses), Best Shots is a wonderful look at the NFL's history--and a great gift for any football fan. --Sunny Delaney ... This book contains over 100 photographs from the NFL, mostly since 1958.They are very well reproduced, and the captions are excellent for putting the images in context. The book is improved by a foreword by Joe Namath in which he discusses his favorite photographs in the book and an introduction by Tom Barnidge, the editor, in which he explains the special opportunities and challenges of photographing the NFL. Almost all of the teams are represented in the book. Some are obviously more represented than others because of their greater past success and longer franchise histories.Part of the book's appeal is seeing some of your favorite players from your team during heroic moments.Packers, Cowboys, Dolphins, Giants, Bears, Rams, Bronco and 49er fans will be the most pleased. At another level, the book is about remembering many of the highlights of the NFL . . . ones that you may have seen on television, or (if you are lucky) in person. The images are concentrated in the last ten years so that younger fans will not feel left out.But fans who are over 50 will think that this volume was made just for them. Fans of all ages will be fascinated by the photographs from the 1930s and 1940s with the old-style helmets, fans huddled under straw bales, and less active play. The variety of photographs is superb.Every aspect of the game is covered, from training camp to accepting congratulations at the end of the Super Bowl. You have offense, defense, special teams, and even referees finding themselves in the middle of the action (during plays and breaking up fights). You also have celebrations in the end zone, complaints to officials, and impending disaster (such as the photograph of half the Cowboy team about to land on one player) If you are like me, the most special part of the book comes in the fine detail that you cannot see as a spectator at the stadium or on television.I was totally arrested by the expressions on the players' faces, as they were sacked, smashed, grabbed by the face mask, and annihilated.Even more remarkable was to see the amazing athletic feats (a jump pass by Jack Kemp, Lynn Swann catching a pass fully stretched out, and Barry Sanders making an incredible cut) at the players' eye level. Some of the famous shots that I remember are in the book, like Namath after winning Super Bowl III, a bloodied Y.A. Title on his knees in defeat in 1964, Bart Starr scoring behind Jerry Kramer, and John Elway in victory after the Super Bowl win.But most of the photographs were new to me.That made reading the book a process of discovery as well as a reminiscence. Many of the color photographs extend over two pages, and were carefully selected so that the key aspects of the action are not lost in the crease. Only three things could have made this book even better -- more photographs, larger pages, and commentaries by the players about the images they appear in.Perhaps if we buy enough books, there will be another edition to add those attractive elements. Until then, this book is the perfect antidote to football-less days and evenings. After you have finished enjoying the book, I suggest that you consider starting a collection of your own favorite sports photographs.I began doing this a number of years ago. Most prints are not overly expensive, and the pleasure they bring is amazing. Give 'em a good shot!

The Pro Football Chronicle: The Complete (Well Almost Record of the Best Players, the Greatest Photos, the Hardest Hits, the Biggest Scandals and T) by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 November, 1990) list price: $16.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (6)
There are no canonisations and platitudes here (for instance, the book criticises in detail Vince Lombardi's late-sixties draft choices and suggests he might have handed Phil Bengtson something of a poisoned chalice - an interesting theory, if nothing else), and no tedious top-ten-this or worst-five-that lists for the more mentally challenged. Instead, there are decade-by-decade glimpses of the game which, taken together, produce the best historical, fan-level portrait of the NFL I've ever come across. My only complaint - and it's a small one - is that the book does fall back on the inevitable statistical section and identifies what it believes to be the "greatest" players. There's enough of this junk in other books ("Total Football" leaps to mind); I would have preferred more pages of esoterica and amusing photographs. This is a book really worth searching out for if your idea of a good read is something other than a fawning biography or Officially Licensed propaganda.

Steiner Predator 10x42Binocular Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $1,299.00 -- our price: Too Low To Display (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Steiner's 10x42 Predator binoculars are lightweight, roof-prism, center-focus hunting binoculars. They feature the same Predator "game sensing" lens coating as the Steiner 8x30 Predator. The green objective lens coating blocks out the colors of haze and foliage and increases the transmission of brown, red, and other game colors. The wrap-around, long-eye-relief eyecups block distracting sidelight. The eyecups are constructed of soft rubber and provide 20 millimeters of eye relief for extended periods of comfortable viewing. These binoculars provide 10x magnification and 42mm lenses for a field of view of 295 feet at 1,000 yards. The rugged forest green rubber construction provides both water and shock resistance to withstand rain, moisture, and jarring.Along with the binoculars, you receive a case, a neoprene strap, and attached objective lens caps. Greatest Moments in Super Bowl History Average Customer Review: DVD (10 October, 2000) list price: $19.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For this new edition of great Super Bowl highlights, NFL Films jumpsaround a bit, staying away from viewing 34 Super Bowls in chronological order. The video is split up into 12 chapters focusing on different aspects, startingwith "Masters of the Game," which focuses on the three players who won multipleMVP awards (quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Bart Starr). Othersegments look at special-team play, defenses, receivers, and the like. "TheQuarterbacks" includes a segment on the MVP of Super Bowl 34, St. Louis Ram KurtWarner. The material really comes alive in the DVD version of the title, but anyfan of the game will be charged up by NFL Films' gusto mix of music, action, andinsightful interviews (from players, coaches, and such experts as Frank Deford, many of them new). --Doug Thomas ... Unlike most of the folks who've punched in their thoughts on this presentation, I thought it covered the big dance's best & worst moments quite well without gettin' TOO in-depth, and wasn't too short at all. Heck, with all the interviews with key participants, different camera angles of memorable plays, alternate radio broadcast tracks, pop-up player stats, action photos, and other moments they threw onto this as "interactive features" (more on this in the next paragraph), it took me over three hours to watch everything! So what's all this I hear about this platter not having enough material? I also liked NFL Films dropping the chronological format, and divvying up the various big dances by various chapters that focus on such things as the Masters of the Game (the Super Bowl's 2-plus-time MVPs Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, and Joe Montana), running backs (Larry Csonka, Emmitt Smith, Franco Harris, John Riggins, Timmy Smith (?!), et. al.), quarterbacks (Troy Aikman, Kurt Warner, Steve Young, etc.), defenses (Dallas' Doomsday defense, the Steelers' Steel Curtain, the 1985 Bears' 46 defense, and so forth), special teams, coaches, and other related positions and aspects of the sport. Then there's the interactive features, which were the only real annoyance I encountered whilst watching this bad-boy. That, and they made Leon Lett's little gaffe in game XXVII a side feature, rather than a part of the main attraction. Also, there are some parts where the picture clarity wasn't all that great, but I blame that more on the source material than I do the video transfer. Stuff filmed in slo-mo tends to be quite a bit grainier than the regular speed variety. Anyhoo, each feature comes with an icon that pops up in the lower right corner of the screen as the show runs, prompting the viewer to access it with his DVD remote.I had trouble working them out at first, `cuz the buttons the liner notes told me to push on my DVD remote didn't activate the features they said they would. After a few rounds of random clicking, however, I eventually figured most of it out. But after taking a good look at the bonus bits, I came to the conclusion that NFL Films could've made things a lot easier if they'd just dropped most of this "interactive" nonsense, and just put the extras aside as bonus materials to be looked at after watching the feature presentation. But, this being one of NFL Films' earlier DVD release, they just HAD to get all experimental... Then there's the inevitable thing with this and other shows like it: as the Roman numerals advance, this becomes more and more out of date, lacking the great moments from subsequent Super Bowls. Like Adam Vinatieri's game-winning kick in XXXVI. Or Raiders QB Rich Gannon throwin' three TD passes to the other team in XXXVII. Fortunately, NFL Films tends to get around this by producing a new & updated "Greatest Super Bowl Moments" show every four to five years, and subsequently broadcast on ESPN or TNT the week before the big dance. That, and they'll put together a new half-hour segment out of the best parts of the latest contest and play it on ESPN2 during Super Bowl week the following year. Speakin' of which, I'm glad to see NFL Films has finally started putting these Super Bowl highlight shows out on DVD in ten-game box sets. If you're an ardent NFL / Super Bowl nut, I highly recommend it! It sure hit the spot for me, and would make a great companion piece to this presentation on any football nut's DVD shelf. My overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars. `Late

NFL's Best Shots: A Century of Sound and Fury VHS Tape (12 October, 1999) list price: $19.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Celebrate great football action with Best Shots: A Century of Sound & Fury, a 55-minute video that provides all the trademark features of NFL Films presentations: outstanding game footage, sometimes in slow motion; dramatic music; sound bites from the players on the field; and, of course, the sonorous voice of narrator John Facenda. Not really a history of the game, this 1999 production organizes old and new game films into loose topics, such as the running game, receiver vs. cornerback, the blitz, weather conditions, and the Super Bowl. Along the way, you'll see many of the NFL's greatest players and greatest plays, though casual fans will be perplexed by the fact that the narration generally does not provide names of the players or details of the games. Anyone can marvel at a run by Jim Brown or Barry Sanders, for example, but the end of the Ice Bowl and Dwight Clark's catch are only significant if the viewer knows the context. Packaged with the video is a CD-ROM that includes trivia bits, six screen savers, and a three-minute QuickTime video that is nearly identical to the opening of Best Shots. A companion book is available separately. --David Horiuchi ... Read more Features Asin: B00001O2GW |
