5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!!
Really Great! Microsoft did it. Feature rich software. It really works well than its Windoze counterpart. Price is a bit high, but once you start using it, you won't regret for that. A must have product for Mac fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job with some nice features
Like almost everyone on the planet, I've used Office for Windows extensively and initially I was a bit put off by Mac Office as it does look and feel different (what the hell is Entourage anyway?).

However on working with it more you get used to it, and it has some nice features that the Windows version doesn't.

    3+
Entourage - I have really come to like the app- I use it as a replacement for Palm Desktop (Memos), Address Book (it is a little 'richer'), and Mail (it does hotmail as well as POP & IMAP), and everything integrates well.
Ability to mark a doc for followup - Office will give you a reminder, even when it's not running.
It's Office, right? It does almost everything.

    3-
While docs are compatible with Windows versions, I have had problems with complex spreadsheets, so I do not think it is 100% perfect.
It is a little sluggish (800mhz G4 iMac, Panther, 512mb).
Entourage's calendar management isn't as good as iCal - can't publish/subscribe, or even import/export data.More generally, Entourage isn't very 'open' - it shares data well with other parts of the app, but not other apps.

Overall, it does what you expect and let's face it, it's the de facto standard for a reason.Expensive thought!

    1-0 out of 5 stars Quicken 200x...
While the promise of this software is great, the reality is unfortunate, at least for me... It does some things very, very well - such as download & categorize bank & visa transactions... It unfortunately lacks functionality & features in other areas that they appear to market the software for, particularly in the investment area...

    features I'd liek to see:
    - foreign exchange for investments (stick to your local $ only!)
    - non-proprietary import/export formats
    - easy, accurate cross platform data exchange
    - H+B option (also hurts import/export across platforms)
    - adjusted cost base reporting for canadian investments (or why bother!?)
    - tax categorization for canadians (should be an easy graft from the pc version)
    - fewer flaws (not just 'bugs') in some feature executions
    - eliminate 'sunset' (terminating) download capability & 'planned obsolescence'
    - similar PC/Mac interfaces

many more advanced & better features seem to exist in the pc version & whileneither seems truly intuitive, I can only suggest that aligning the two platforms (and offering an H+B mac version) might help generate the sales that would justify the R+D...

Chicken or egg question? Absolutely! You can't expect sales if the software doesn't work or is misrepresented in the marketing!

2-0 out of 5 stars Why monopolies are bad
I switched from Windows (XP) to Mac OS X. Everything is better on the Mac, save Quicken. I used Quicken 2001 on my PC, so I expected Quicken 2003 for Macs to be an improvement. Wrong.

Quicken 2003 doesn't allow for as much customization of views as the PC version of two years earlier. Also, there's no home inventory, which Quicken 2001 for my PC had. Most importantly, I am can't upload my portfolio and balances to Quicken's website, which is one of the features I used to use the most. I had been in contact with a tech at Intuit's support group, but he eventually stopped responding to my e-mails. It doesn't crash on me regularly, but it does occur more often than with any of my other programs.

Two years down the road and the software is worse. Unfortunately, everything I've read about 2004 actually makes it sound worse! Too bad there are no other options - a little compeition might force Intuit to actually improve its product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but not stable!!!
Quicken 2003 for Mac came load on my eMac so I decided to give it a try.I've always kept my financial records on an old fashioned spreadsheet so I thought this would be an easy and more excititing way of tracking my budget.

After spending a couple of evenings learning about the program and getting it set up it closed unexpectedly on me.After that I could open it but if I clicked on the Banking tab or tried to review my budget it would close again.I checked the Quicken on line support but could not find the help I needed there.

Eventually I discovered that I could open a backup copy of my data and that seemed to solve the problem. So I started working from the backup copy.Once again I was now setting up my catagories and shifting some into sub catagory positions when it closed again - same problem all over.

The problems I'm having seem to be primarily related to setting up the catagories so once I get through that process I may be ok.

I had no problems setting up the autodown load from my bank.It turns out I have to download my credit card information in a .qif file and then import it.That takes a couple extra steps but it worked fine also.

    Good luck! ... Read more

    FileMaker Pro 6.0 - Mac

    Editorial Review

FileMaker Pro 6.0 makes data management for individuals and small groups engaging and almost fun. Installation and setup are both surprisingly quick and easy, and the templates and wizards will have most users frolicking with their new or imported databases in just a couple of hours. The interface and design tools are comfortable for Windows users of all levels of experience. The software is not designed for the lowest common denominator, though--advanced users will find FileMaker Pro's scripting language for queries and other tasks handy, if not all-powerful.

Data entry couldn't be easier. For some formats, it's as simple as dragging and dropping folder contents, so multimedia management, for example, becomes almost trivial. FileMaker Pro's data manipulation tools are more powerful than before, which means administrators would do well to limit users or train them carefully. Searches, the meat of the package, are simple enough for beginners but offer enough complexity to keep power users happy. One new timesaving search feature is the extend/constrain function: if a search returns too few or too many results, it takes just one step to expand or contract search parameters.

Web-style integration in FileMaker Pro 6.0 has taken a huge step forward from version 5.5; the look and feel of the desktop is almost seamlessly translated to intranet application. However, those with more than 10 potential FileMaker users should pick up the unlimited-use version of the software. FileMaker can import and export XML, so data can be manipulated and then easily shared with non-users via a Web browser.

While there might be more powerful data management packages available, for a wide range of uses and users, FileMaker Pro 6.0 is tough to beat. --Rob Lightner

5-0 out of 5 stars My most important software package
Our company has been using FileMaker since 1989.As it is the only database Ive ever used (other than a brief experiment with 4D) I really can't compare it with anything else.I'm here to tell you it will do the job you want to do.

I won't use technospeak in my review, as I am here for the novice users (and anyone who is reading a review to determine if this software is for them is probably a novice).FileMaker will keep track of all your company info.Even if you are a one-person company it will work for you. When you have 100 employees on the payroll, it will still work for you.If you have never designed a database before, you can do it.

Now, you WILL have to devote some time to learn the software, but if you are to be administrating a database, youre going to have to be doing some maintenance anyway. With FileMaker, you can begin using your database the first day, then add more features later on as you add more records and more users.I recommend learning FileMaker as opposed to hiring your project out to a developer for the simple fact that YOU know your business best and you will constantly be making changes as your business changes. My philosophy is that it is better for YOU to learn FileMaker than for a developer to learn your business.

Go ahead and get it.You will be able to make beautiful, efficient databases if you take the time to learn it.This product will do the job.I guarantee it.Contact me and I will help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding product that empowers users and designers alike!
      Greetings Amazon reviewers..

Now that you've read the Microsoft commercial below from:

"Reviewer: Andre Da Costa (see more about me) from Jamaica W.I."

Here's the truth, this product has the capabilities for implementing a client / server database network easier than anything currently on the market! And the client / server capabilities are built in! And it doesn't matter if it's based on the PC OR the MAC. Further, once designed and implemented, will work seamlessly with both platforms on the network. Additionally, after extensive research for an insurance client that I just completed designing a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) for, it was BY FAR the least expensive alternative, ESPECIALLY relative to Microsoft. In addition, it has the lowest overhead (computing hardware/software requirements) relative to anything of its capabilities on the market. You can reference these system requirements (along with features) at their web site that really gives a good deal of information. Note these minimum requirements that most systems can easily handle these days:
(compare these minimum requirements to the latest version of Microsoft's Access or any other database for that matter)

      PC
·Intel Compatible 90 MHz Pentium or higher
·32 MB of RAM (or more)
      ·Windows 98, Me, NT4 (SP6), 2000, XP

      Mac
      ·Power Mac or higher
      ·32 MB of RAM
      ·OS 8.6-9.22

      Mac OS X
      ·Apple G3 or higher
      ·128 MB of RAM
      ·OS X 10.1

The client had older PCs using Windows 98SE. Obviously, I used the PC version of the software which is very similar to the Mac version. If I had decided to implement a Microsoft "solution" it would have involved upgrading not only the hardware but the operating systems too. Then, the cost of the Access copy doesn't come cheap if you haven't compared lately. FoxPro didn't fair any better, SQL Server worse. Especially in a clent <==> server design paradigm!

Bottom line, a fully customized relational database designed, developed and deployed in record time with minimal cost to the owner (no new hardware or operating systems) and working from initial installation to this day with minimal database administration. FULLY compatible with either PC or MACs on the network and future operating system upgrades on either platform. Personally, I'm pleased and I know a business that is extremely happy. Win-win situation..

One thing I found rather nice is you can download a 30-day free trial of the basic Filemaker Pro software at their web site to see if it meets your needs - certainly a nice gesture. (filemaker.com)

4-0 out of 5 stars And it works with fine with Excel
An update to my earlier review:Filemaker works great with Excel (contrary to what an earlier reviewer guessed, apparently without testing).Last week I built a small Filemaker database to track contributors and potential contributors to a charitable group with which I work.Yesterday, I received an Excel spreadsheet from another member of the group, and it contained nearly 1,000 names, addresses, and phone numbers.Importing it was a snap:I simply used the "Import" function, choosing Excel as the file-type I wanted to import.Filemaker gave me a nice graphical interface to match Excel columns to fields in my database; it also gave me the chance to add a new field if necessary. Then a button click and the data imported cleanly and quickly, without any problems. ... Adobe Photoshop 7.0-Mac

      Editorial Review

Mixed-media professionals such as photographers, Web designers, and graphic designers will not be disappointed with Adobe's latest incarnation of Photoshop. While the major difference between this and earlier versions is that Photoshop 7.0 is Mac OS X compatible, this version also successfully addresses the issues of file management, easy photo retouching, and smarter output for the Web. In addition, new, improved tools such as painting and an enhanced brush palette allow Photoshop to build on its reputation as the leading tool for image manipulators. New-school designers of wireless applications will smile when they discover that Photoshop 7.0 finally offers support for WBMP-format graphics.

Photoshop 7.0's new file management system comes in the form of a Windows Explorer-like file browser that allows users to easily sort and locate their images within various projects. Users can now organize projects by name, date, resolution, and a number of additional parameters.

The enhanced brush palette allows users to create custom brushes and save them as a preset that can be accessed from the Tool options bar. Users can easily vary different aspects of the brush by changing the hue, opacity, or flow of the brushes for pastels, oils, and charcoal. Photoshop 7.0 also introduces a new Healing Brush and Patch Tool. With this tool, users can easily "heal" their images by removing scratches, blemishes, and other imperfections while also preserving shading, lighting, and texture attributes.

Adobe has taken great strides in revamping Photoshop 7.0 to be more Web-ready than ever before. With the help of its companion software, Image Ready, users can now easily create rollovers and complex navigation bars with selected state by using the new Rollovers palette. Additional Web-ready features include enhanced Web export functions that allow designers to preview images designed for PDAs and mobile phones in the WBMP format. Users can easily create a slide show of their images and post online using the new Web Gallery. For those concerned about posting their images online, they can secure their images with the new password protection feature before sharing them.

A long overdue spell checker has finally been introduced, with wicked multilingual spell-checking capabilities.A new search-and-replace feature allows users to search and replace across different layers in the same document.

While Photoshop 7.0 introduces an impressive array of features that allow photographers and Web and graphic designers to work more effectively with Web and wireless devices, Photoshop still remains the leading tool for anyone serious about digital imaging. No other software package provides users with the ability to create such high-quality images. --Rich Ting ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product... well worth it. Better than CS, IMO.
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 was a significant leap over 6.0. One great new tool is the Liquify filter, which lets you directly manipulate images. Obviously, Photoshop is the De Facto standard for image editing, and likely always will be. Since this is the last version that works with OS 9 anyways, it's not like I could use CS (though I've tried CS, and don't particularly like it).

Version 7.0.1 is very often faster than Photoshop CS is, so it's a good thing to have for very large files.

      Invaluable... nothing beats it. Nothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but Quality
I never had access to many Adobe products, with exception for Pagemaker, because of the high price. But at my high school we have what we they called an Academy of Graphic Arts and Design. There, with the financial help of a well known college, the academy was given a full copy of Adobe Photoshop 7.0!

I really enjoyed learning how to use Adobe Photoshop 7.0.I'm not one to read manuals or help menus and just like to play around. Learning how to use everything is fairly easy.

One feature I LOVED is what is called "layers". You can have a photo in the background and then open other files and drag and drop onto the first picture. Then you can choose to erase part of the pictures you placed on top. But not everything is erased...each layer underneath the one you are erasing is still visible! There are various erasers (shape-wise) too, so it can look blended or have neat edges.

I also liked the variety of "filters". These filters help change the picture. You can add texture to the picture, distort it, add light to a certain area, make the picture look like it on a stamp (as in rubber stamp)...the list goes on.

The one bad thing about this is you can't do "Undo except for the change you just did (meaning if you made a mistake and decided to try something to "cover it up", if you didn't like the outcome of the "fix" you can't go back and change the mistake) EXCEPT if you are layering, you go to the box where it shows each layer and go to the history where you can delete (or "undo") up until the mistake you had made is gone.

My point is, this program is Top Class. The best I have used (and I have tried a few) Although I'd like to try the Windows version, for those who have a Mac (this is the version I used and have experience with) GET THIS if you love photoediting. The possiblities are endless.

Now if only I could save up enough money...

5-0 out of 5 stars Cannot pull myself away
Photoshop 7.0 is incredible. The new paint enhancement are mindblowing.Everyone should learn how to use this program.I have been able to do so many things,Edit and enhance my own artwork and comics, make custom t-shirts, make beutiful portaits and photo collages, just let my artistic mind run wild. This program has opened a world of opportunity, and it should for you to.BUY IT, worth every penny. ... Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0
      by Adobe
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
      CD-ROM (02 August, 2002)
      list price: $99.00

      Editorial Review

For intermediate digital image enthusiasts who don't need Adobe Photoshop, Adobe's barer-bones Photoshop Elements 2.0 works atop the same engine and provides many of the same tools for a fraction of the price.

Elements' interface is less complex then Photoshop, packaging oft-used quick correction tools in easy-to-access locations. The program gears itself toward the novice user looking to learn more about digital image modification and enhancement. You can also enter keywords into a search field and Elements will offer up related walkthroughs and instructions.

Elements can input images from a variety of sources, including scanners and digital cameras. It's more powerful than the average program bundled with any of these devices, so you can make it your default image editor for either or both. Stills can also be snagged from a variety of video formats, including QuickTime, MPEG, AVI, and Windows Media. Before opening images, you can browse through their thumbnails, which include a preview of the image as well as its size and type.

Inputted images can be enhanced, distorted, corrected, or combined into panoramas through the PhotoMerge stitching tool. The new Selection Brush lets users simply paint over an item they would like to cut or copy. While it still takes a steady hand to select non-straight edges, it's easier than using the standard selection tools such as the rectangular marquee or the lasso. Elements works well as a file manager as well, its new batch processing feature allowing users to make changes to several images at once.

Output options are also expansive, including attaching photos to e-mail messages, printing images, or saving them in a smaller Web format and then uploading them to the Internet. Beyond these typical tools, Elements users can create image slideshows in PDF format that can be viewed on PDAs as well as other PCs.

While there are other image editing programs that sell for the same price, Photoshop Elements brings to the table much of the power of its bigger sibling while making it accessible for the average user. --J. Curtis ... Read more

Elements is a program that is packed with many of the same features as the more expensive full version Adobe Photoshop. The features that it doesn't have, like duotones, channel palette and Quickmask, can be worked around with an extra step or two. It is a terrific value.
That said, the learning curve for those new to the world of Adobe, can be pretty steep. I should know - I use it to teach a digital scrapbooking class at an Educational Center in California (yes - a FREE course). For those of you who have not used Adobe Products before, there is 3 to 5 ways to do just about everything - this can be confusing for beginners. Besides a menu bar with drop down windows, there is a toolbar, a tool editor, as well as palettes that dock and separate from the main menu bar. The Layer Palette (A wonderful and useful thing) seems to be particulary hard for beginners to understand.
My suggestion is, if you are just starting to use Adobe product, find a school and take a course BEFORE your purchase. Most of my student do end up buying the software, or a scanner that includes it, by the end of the semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
I have worked with Photoshop for years now but I have never came accross anything as easy to use as Photoshop Elements. I can't think of anything better and more easier to use for created professional results. Really very good product!

This is a very stable, incredibly smooth OS. It launches at lightning speed, is very intuitive and the learning curve is very short. If there is a downside, compatible professional graphic software is in short supply. It is a huge improvement over Windows and previous Mac OS.

Mac OS X does not disable built-in floppy drives. Mac OS Xruns better on computers that are built for it. Running it on a Beige G3 is like running Windows on a 486; you can do it, but it doesn't mean you should. Crashes occour from poorly-designed APPLICATIONS, not OS X. I have had OS X for over a year, and I have had only 2 'kernel panics' (full system lockups). hbj200 is wrong about the 1%. it's more like 8% and growing rapidly, and everyone uses Windows because they believe Bill's propaganda. There is more documentation about digital cameras that networking in OS 10.2 because of Rendezvous (Stable, Efficient Networking for Dummies)
