Sony DSCS75 Cyber-shot 3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $599.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The feature-rich Sony DSC-S75 digital camera presents a very plausible replacement for a traditional 35mm film camera. It features a 3.3-megapixel CCD, a superb Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 3x optical zoom lens, 2x digital zoom (for a 6x total zoom), and other extras such as movie mode and voice recording for annotations.

The DSC-S75 is larger than most of Sony's other Cyber-shot cameras, but it's nicely weighted and benefits from the rubber grip to the left of the lens. The DSC-S75 shares many features with the Sony MVC-CD300, including a variety of modes, such as simultaneous recording of both TIFF and JPEG images, a voice mode that records an audio file of between 5 and 40 seconds together with the still image, and the ability to record both short MPEG movies with sound and animated GIFs. However, unlike the MVC-CD300, the DSC-S75 has only a two-image burst mode and no exposure bracketing feature.

Sony has added some useful features for reviewing and editing images on the camera before they have been uploaded, including a 5x LCD zoom, a slideshow feature, and the ability to enlarge and trim images. You can also divide MPEG movies into two separate files. The DSC-S75 also records the exposure, shutter speed, and aperture setting of each image for later reference.

Playback of images is either via TV by use of supplied AV cable, through a Memory Stick reader (such as the Sony MSACUS1A), or by attaching the camera to the PC via the supplied USB cable. In this last case, the camera is mounted as a new drive on your Mac or PC's desktop, allowing easy transfer of images to the hard drive.

The camera is supplied with an AC adaptor, rechargeable battery pack, 8 MB Memory Stick, AV connecting cable, shoulder strap, a rather short USB cable, and software on CD-ROM. --Nick Baxter

Pros:

  • Good replacement for 35mm SLR
  • Superb Carl Zeiss lens
  • Useful preview options
  • Nice extras, including audio file annotation and MPEG movies with sound

Cons:

  • Only 3x optical zoom
  • Limited to two-image burst mode

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony S75 Great for the amature photographer
Love this camera, Sharp pictures, easy to use, tough, a feature for every situation if you chose to get fancy.Recharagable battery lasts long and charges quick.Negs would be: slight delay between button pressed and pic taken, but seems this is common at this price range.Had it 2 years and taken 4000 pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars kjb
This would get five stars if it didn't take so long to take a picture. As noted in other reviews, there is a significant lag between pressing the button and taking the picture - a real negative when dealing with kids or action pictures.

What I like:

The ability to take a picture in one size and save it later as a different size. This is great for saving small files for emails, and also saving the same picture in a larger format so it has enough detail to print a crisp and clear picture.

The camera uses the same battery, memory stick and power cord as my Sony digital video camera. Less stuff to pack and carry with you on vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera
Not a Pro, but I can vouch for this camera. Great product from Sony. You'll not be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about.Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The SanDisk 128MB Memory Stick, like most 128MB cards, will store on average 142 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 106 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera,64 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 51 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 40 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best all purpose stick
I've got three of these and they work just as well as Sony's.I take pictures with my Sony on them but I use them instead of floppy disks.I put it in my reader at work, home, and at my mother's, and download programs from the internet directly to them, transfers files to them and use them the same way as floppys are use.I haven't used the floppy on any of the computers for the past year.Small as a stick of gum, can be packed in a wallet.Best item invented!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice product
I bought this product for use in my Sony Clie handheld computer. I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the Sony brand memory stick, and I am glad to say that this product has worked flawlessly over the past year.

I would buy a Sandisk product again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets... for the money...
I bought one of these quite some time ago to use with my SLRs (Canon T90s) and it turned out it was totally useless for them. It was way to wobbly so I ended up buying a Bogen tripod and ball head for around [$$$]. This tripod went into the closet until lately when we bought a DV JVC camcorder and for it this tripod works very well. The camcorder is light enough for the tripod to hold it steady enough. The fluid head is a bit of a joke (not really fluid), but it works for what we use it for. And the bubble level is a nice detail. You cannot put many pounds on this and don't expect to take razor sharp pictures on long exposures. But it's an inexpensive alternative for smaller digital cameras and camcorders. It's lightweight and easy to carry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get What You Pay For
It's been a long time since I used a tripod but I managed to get it set up without reading the instructions. There are no instructions so save the box for helpful hints. Tripod is fit for my purpose: mostly indoor use planned. It is hard to get it truely static when pressing shutter release on Minolta Dimage X. I was also horizontally challenged - the base has a little level that is below (BELOW) the camera pad.I would not take this on a rugged outdoor adventure with many uneven surfaces (They will need to make a titaniium one to get it this light but durable; start saving now.) I would not use it around kids, old folks, crowds,or any combination of these because your expensive electonic gizmo is going to going to fly thru the air with the greatest of ease.A nylon or tyvek travel case would be a helpful item.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad tripod, but....
This is a pretty decent tripod, for the price. However, don't be misled by the "fluid effect head." That's why I happened to buy this particular tripod, and it turns out that I already owned one!

I had purchased a tripod made by Ambico which was almost identical about 14 months prior to this purchase. At the place where I bought it, it cost me around 20 bucks. I had decided to get a different tripod because the fluid effect head wasn't nearly fluid enough for me. When this one finally came, I compared the two, and my old one worked just as good as this one.

If you're looking for a cheap tripod that gives you great bang for your buck, then this tripod is for you. If, however, you're looking for a tripod that truly is fluid, look somewhere else. Oh. And if you're going to get this tripod, shop around a bit. You might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Another XP user who can no longer use the Reader
VERY disappointed! It was wonderful with Windows 98, but the driver recommended to download for use in XP doesn't help at all. Sony has no answer. Am also finding that using the memory stick to transport Word or Excel data frequently corrupts the files and loses data. Seems the memory stick is best left to use in cameras then viewed through directly hooking up to the computer.

First, let me say that buying from Asena Shop has been the best by far!I received the item sooner than I expected it.It was in better condition than I expected. The item was easy to set up, and easy to use.Overall, everything from shipment to item beat my expectations.I will, without a doubt, be shopping from this seller again.Thank you so much!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect to use it with Windows XP
I bought the reader a few weeks ago and used it with Windows 2000 and it worked great.I then upgraded to XP and found that the drivers would not work, I went looking for new drivers and found that the US1A will not support XP and that I have to spend more money to buy the new model reader US20 to be able to read my memory sticks with XP.Needless to say I am extremely disappointed with SONY in this case. ... HP PhotoSmart 1115 Inkjet Printer
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $199.94
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Forget having your digital photos printed by someone else. With this PhotoSmart InkJet printer, you can print full-color photos yourself quickly and easily. Print sizes range from 4 by 6 inches all the way up to 8.5 by 11 inches, at up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution. (Note that the highest-resolution photos will require premium photo paper.)

The HP 1115 lets you print directly from your digital camera, using CompactFlash, SmartMedia, or Sony Memory Stick memory cards. You can also connect directly to your computer using the built-in USB port and included HP photo imaging software. Printing is remarkably fast, producing 12 pages per minute (ppm) black and 10 ppm color; the printer includes both a 20-sheet, 4-by-6-inch photo tray and a 100-sheet, 8.5-by-11-inch paper tray.

The HP 1115 features color layering technology from PhotoREt III, printing richer colors for great skin tones, as a quicker printing alternative to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution, while maintaining the same exceptional print quality.

The HP 1115 is both Mac and PC compatible (but optimized for Windows): Windows 98, 2000 Professional, Me, XP Home, and XP Professional; and Mac OS 8.6 or later on G3 and G4 with USB-connect Macintosh. The printer is backed by a one-year warranty, with the option to extend it to three years at additional cost. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I have used this printer for the last two years, though it has not been heavily used.It has completely broken down, will not acknowledge that it has paper, and the "carriage" is broken. It will not feed anything through and constantly has paper jams.I have been told by repair specialists that it will cost several hundred dollars to fix it because the "carriage" is so expensive.Though it does print beautiful photos, I am very disappointed with this product's performance over time!

Great Printer, but does get a bit cranky at times. The 2 side print capability is a plus, saving paper & making printouts more compact.Does a 4 + job on photos, but hard to use the small photo tray.I've used this printer for approx 2 years and just now feel it may be time to upgrade.I feel I made a good choice for my photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars This IS NOT a bargain price
The cartridge is just fine, I use it for printing cards and like the quality of my prints, but Amazon is acting like they are giving us such a bargain. I'm disappointed by this. You can buy this same cartridge at regular price directly from the folks who make the printer for a whole whopping 70 cents more than this supposedly 20% mark down sale price. That is not a sale, it's highway robbery. Now the price for the regular sized cartridge IS a sale, it's cheaper than you can get it directly from the people who make the printer for this cartridge or any other place I've seen so far.
