This CD is a very kickass, and hard to find item. If u cant find it go to pricegrabber.com cuz thats were i got mine at. in my opinion this cd is better then squattas paradise and no gods / no managers bcuz its not over produced (maybe not produced at all). i couldnt find this cd on tent city's web site or anything. you damn well better buy this cd cuz its better then leftover crack or any other CV cd's. to bad they broke up tho.

5-0 out of 5 stars great squatstyle punk-ska
This demo isn't as good as CV's cd No Gods/No Managers (which isn't on Amazon...) because the recording quality is quite bad, but if you can look past that it is a brilliant collection.Sloppy guitars and great innovative ska-punk chords and beats make CV unique. You will never hear another band that sounds like this (apart from Leftover Crack, because it is made up of a few members of CV).I recommend this demo to anyone who likes real punk, not blink 182 or poppy s*** like that, and especially to anyone who likes hard fast sloppy punk.

    Editorial Review

The flaws are easily forgiven in this beautiful version ofLouisa May Alcott's novel. A stirring look at life in New England duringthe Civil War, Little Women is a triumph for all involved. We follow one family asthey split into the world, ending up with the most independent, theoutspoken Jo (Winona Ryder). This time around, the dramatics andconclusions fall into place a little too well, instead of finding life'slittle accidents along the way. Everyone now looks a bit too cute and oh,so nice. As the matron, Marmee, Susan Sarandon kicks the film into amodern tone, creating a movie alive with a great feminine sprit. KirstenDunst (Interview with the Vampire) has another showy role. The youngensemble cast cannot be faulted, with Ryder beginning the movie in a roleakin to light comedy and crescendoing to a triumphant end worthy of anOscar. --Doug Thomas ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I Wish I Had Rented the DVD Instead of Bought!
This was a decent film adaptation of one of my favorite books Little Women and I don't always require a movie to be 100% like the book but I'm a little disappointed with how much was changed and how some of the characters were using modern slang words that they just woudn't have used in the olden days and I can't believe that they didn't have Wynona Ryder utter the phrase Christopher Columbus! like Katherine Hepburn and June Allison did in their film portrayals as Jo. While I think the main cast acted well some of the supporting actors were miscast. I actually like Eric Stoltz, he was great in Memphis Belle but I think he was miscast as Laurie's teacher friend who married Meg. He just played the character as if he was a mamby pamby weakling! The movie was worth viewing once but I'm not sure I would want to view this movie again and I wish I had rented the DVD instead of bought!

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUE TO THE SPIRIT OF THE BOOK!
Yeah, so this movie is not really true to the books with all of the modern feminist PC stuff but it's true to the spirit of the book and I liked this movie. Okay so the Marmee and Meg of the book were too prim and proper to bring things up like women being forced to wear corsets and stuff like that but I don't think that it ruined the movie but just added a different twist to it! The cast was great, but I especially liked Winona Ryder as Jo, Claire Daines as Beth, Kirstin Dunst as younger Amy, and Samantha Mathis as older Amy! If you have read the book and loved the other movie versions of Little Women you may like this too. It has a modernized style but it's good and I recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad interpretation of the classic book
I didn't like this movie too much, I think the director and script writer took too much of the book and added too much of their own, in a way that spoils the movie.
The movie flaws over the most important parts of the book, and on the other hand gives great attention to events invented by the script writer. Throughout the movie there is a feeling that the most important parts of the book pop out of nowhere, for two minutes, and then talentlessly cut-off for some invented event.
In addition the movie is filled with 20th century values, which are completely anachronistic to the time when the plot happenes. For example, there is a protest against Child Labor in China, which makes you wanna shout that even in the U.S and China there was child labor these days, so what's the point of putting it in. It feels as if the writer insults the viewer's intelligence by making his messages as clear as can be, and the credibility of the plot pays for it.
The design of the characters is another problem. Jo is very feminine in this movie and hardly remind the book. Her famous exclamation "Christopher Colombus!" is replaced here by a weak "By Jehosafat"(?). The mother is presented like a hard person. The movie gets lost between the sisters and there is a feeling that none of the sisters get, eventually, enough attention.
In conclusion, I think it's a badly written and talentlessly directed movie. I think it's a misinterpretation of the book, caused by a desparate try to be original and a lousy attempt to make the book "understood" for the modern person, as if anything that was written before 1990 is beyond our grasp. Thus, it ignores the fact that great litrature is timeless and eternal. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Francesca Lia Block, whose Weetzie Bat novels have often beencalled pop fairy tales, here turns to the real thing for some very differentimaginings of Snow White, Thumbelina, Cinderella, Rose Red and Rose White, andother tales. Block's stories are more resonance than retelling, fevered dreamsbehind which the outlines of the traditional tales move fitfully like figuresglimpsed now and then through a summer fog. Veiled references to Block's own LosAngeles appear in the twisty house of the seven dwarfs built into a canyon likeLaurel or Topanga, the redwood forest on a seaside cliff through which Beautytravels to her Beast, the tree-darkened canyon houses with French doors thatopen onto exuberant neglected gardens lush with irises and roses. In theseevocations Bluebeard becomes an aging blue-haired producer, Sleeping Beautypricks her arm with a heroin needle, Red Riding Hood's wolf is a lecherousstepfather, and the Snow Queen is a sex goddess who lives in a marble mansionwith her boy toy, possibly in Beverly Hills. Sensuous images enrich theselanguid and darkly ironic visions: jasmine-scented night gardens, leopardcouches with velvet pillows, luscious food flavored with mint, coconut milk, orpomegranate sauce, cool candlelit baths. As always, Block's poetic allegories ofadolescence are strikingly original and a bit dangerous, a feast forconnoisseurs of YA fiction and savvy older teens. (Ages 14 and older) --PattyCampbell ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy and Reality Make Colorful Blend
This is the first book by Francesca Lia Block I've ever read. It was clearly a good choice. This book takes fairy tales and modernizes them, adding homosexuality, rape and tough love into the mix to provide a good read without the "sugar coating" This book has made me rethink fairy tales in a way I never thought was possible. All of the fairy tales, which have simple, short names such as Snow and Glass (Snow White and Cinderella) are their own entities in this book yet flow in a fantastic way. I recommend this book to many girls over the age of twelve.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly Krass Retellings!
I'm as big a fan of fairy tale retellings as the next person, but these stories were horrible. The prose is horrible with little or no magic or rhythm, and the retellings themselves leave on aghast.

Don't bother with this collection, unless you have considerable amounts of both time and money to waste!

4-0 out of 5 stars very cool...
faerietales were original meant for big people, too, and flb takes them back. there is no hansel and gretel tale in this book, though. the story bones is based on bluebeard, a grimm's tale they don't really use much anymore. someof these stories are things that could happen, and a few of them, well, aren't, but that's why they're faerie tales. this book is great to have with you when you don't have long to wait before something happens, but want something quick and beautiful to keep you busy. ... Editorial Review

Esmé Raji Codell has written a funny, hip diary filled with one-liners and unadorned thoughts that speak volumes about the raw, emotional life of a first-year teacher. Like Ally McBeal in the classroom, the miniskirted and idealistic Codell sometimes fantasizes her career is a musical. Her inner-city Chicago elementary school fades to black as the lunch lady strikes an arabesque or a struggling student performs the dance of the dying swan, all set to her interior soundtrack. (Tina Turner's "Funkier Than a Mosquita's Tweeter" echoes whenever her idea-stealing, dimwitted principal harangues her.) She's a rash, petite, white lady who roller-skates through the halls and insists that her fifth-graders call her "Madame Esmé." But it's not all fun and games: she introduces us to children who fling their desks and apologize in tears, and at one point, after reporting a disruptive student to her mother, who subsequently thrashes the young girl, she dry heaves into her classroom's trash can.

Codell's 24-year-old voice is loud and clear ("Serious gross out," she writes after the scorned principal hugs her), though, on the principle that kids say the darnedest things, she often simply repeats their comments for comic effect. She's got sass, maybe too much self-confidence at times, and though there's no deep introspection in Educating Esmé, you'll be convinced her 10-year-old charges emerge the better for knowing her. --Jodi Mailander Farrell ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Smugness at it's best
As a third year teacher, I am constantly on the look-out for teacher memoirs that can give me some sense of belonging. This book, however, is more of a list of things that "Madame Esme" did right in her first year of teaching. It's hollow, incredibly smug, and rings untrue for me. I can't believe that this woman actually DID teach for a whole year ... everything she tries as a teacher seems to have worked, and I believe if you were to ask her, nothing would have gone wrong. Hollow, useless ... although funny at times, I suspect that's more because she's a good writer rather than a good teacher.

If you are a student teacher or a first year teacher thinking about buyingthis book, you're much better off reading bellhooks, who, though she is a college professor, knows more about pedagogy in her little finger than Esme Codell (or "Cordell" as hermaligned principal refers to her) knows in her whole body.

This is not the realistic world of teaching!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars boy is she conceeded
This book is mildly entertaining, but Esme is so conceeded throughout the book that I couldn't take anything she wrote seriously.

2-0 out of 5 stars Call Me Madame
This book was not what I expected.Based on the title, "Educating Esme," I anticipated reading about a teacher's learning and growing experiences, triumphs and failures, her first year on the job. It is a light, amusing read overall, but I was disappointed that this book was not more reflective and personal. Are we supposed to believe that this was her actual diary or is the format just for effect? It read more like a litany of "Madame Esme's" activities and achievements. One feels that she is pitching for a job morethan baring her soul.Perhaps the title "Educated Esme" or "Esme's Way" would have been more apt.

Esme is smart, empathetic, creative, and has a backbone.I think her students got a lot of love and encouragement from her. They also got a mini-skirted, rock onstage with the hip-hop band role model (In one student's words, "Madame Esme's got it going on.").Esme was antagonistic to nearly everyone else involved in her students' lives - the parents, administrators and other teachers.Having been raised in the innercity and attended public school there, I could easily identifywith her portrayals of some of the the self-serving tenured professionals in the school system. But I was sorry to find so little humility in these pages and scant respect for the parent's critical role in a child's education.

I did benefit from Esme's mention of some of the books she read aloud to her class. There were a couple of titles I took note of and hope to read to my children.

If you're looking for a modern, rather flimsy account of innercity public education with a "To Sir With Love" flair, you'll get a taste of that here.If you can keep your expectations low enough, you may be pleasantly surprised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lenore is a gothic wonderland...
Ah, yes, the ever so elusive mayfly known as a gothic paradise. The Lenore comics, in my opinion, rank right on up there with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and Invader Zim for capturing the heart and soul of the darkness within.Cheery yet suitibly morbid, these grusome tales were passed about my high school like pop corn at a b-grade horror film.

Addictive, humorous, and fun to share with an equally apathic friend.

I would recomend this book to anyone between the ages of 14 and 21 who has ever felt like the whole world was in stark contrast with reality.

If you've ever laughed at a cheerleader that fell on her face, this book is for you.

If you *are* a cheerleader and you've *never* fallen on your face, you're too perfect to exist in this realm, let alone to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars oh my goth
a must have for your collection of cute spooky goth books. similar to those by tim burton, edward gorey, brandon ragan and voltaire. order it, it belongs in every goth's library

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly - Lenore is all hype and utter tripe.
This book seemed to appeal to me from the outside but once I "read" the strips... To say these books are overated is an understatement judging from the praise bestowed upon them by various reviewers here and elsewhere.

    The good:
The only decent thing about Lenore is the artwork. In particular, the front covers are excellent - they really grab you. A minus point is that "Roman Dirge" is obviously ripping off Tim Burton's art style here - but does it well enough for me to forgive that fact.

    The bad:
The stories are total and beyond crap and contain nothing I would say was funny. I'm certainly not offended by the subject matter - I'm only offended by the pure crapness of the so-called "stories". It's like the ideas are there but the creator's obvious lack of imaginative storytelling kills the whole premise totally.

The Lenore character is a great idea but the strips are some of the most boring tripe I've ever read - the sort of stuff doodled by bored, suicidal teenagers.

Don't get me wrong - I was really looking forward to reading Lenore but there's actually little to read and the "jokes" are just unbelievably bland and unfunny. My advice is that "Roman Dirge" finds someone who can write decent stories for the characters because, as an artist, he shows a lot of promise but sucks big time as a writer.

I give this product 2 stars (average) because I really like the art. If the quality of writing matched the art I'd give it a 4 or 5. Shame that it just isn't to be. As it is, the only people who will enjoy Lenore are those looking for exceedingly simple, childish comic strips of little substance or intellect.

One more thing: People go on about Lenore being "dark". Well, it's not dark, it just tries hard to be funny in a sick way (and failing miserably). For a real dark comic book, check out Chester Brown's classic "Ed the Happy Clown" (or any other of his Yummy Fur stuff for that matter). Chester knows how to write and draw stories which are funny, dark, weird, disturbing and sad all at once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The World's Ultimate Dollhouse
When I was 7 years old, my mother, grandmother and a cousin of mine went to Chicago, and one of the places we went was the Museum of Science and Industry. Before we went, my mother told me that as a young girl, she had seen the fairy castle when it toured the country before becoming a permanent exhibit at the museum. She told me how much she loved it, and I couldn't wait to see it. I was not disappointed. This IS the ultimate dollhouse. Every time I go to the museum, you can't get me to leave without seeing the fairy castle.I took my own daughter to see it, and now she loves it, too. The last time we went, I found this wonderful book at the gift shop, and was thrilled that now I could look at my beloved fairy castle whenever I wished. This book is a real treasure, with beautiful pictures of the castle. Anyone who loves dollhouses, and the fairy castle in particular, will love this book. It never fails to provoke happy memories for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairies Live Here!
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the castle in Chicago, and can hardly find the words to say how magnificent it was! Still, in the time I had to view it, so many details were missed. That is why this book is so great. It not only displays the castle with better lighting, it gives you a chance to savor all the tiny details you might never have seen. There is also some wonderful biographical information on Colleen Moore herself. A must for miniature lovers, little girls, and dreamers everywhere!

As a little girl, growing up inChicago in the 60's, one of my favorite things was going to see ColleenMoore's Doll House every year.I'm sure you can probably imagine howmagical this huge, intricately planned, priceless, bejeweled dollhouseseemed in a darkened room by itself, lit with soft lights, telephones allaround it so you could listen to discriptions of each room as you peeredthrough the glass barrier surrounding it.This book captures much of thebeauty of the amazing miniature treasures and the magic of the houseitself-and definitely puts a smile on my face. ... Editorial Review

Writer-director Kevin Smith revives the characters of his indie classic film Clerks for this animated series created for network television. Though it aired for just two episodes on TV, the two-disc set has all six episodes plus a bevy of special features.

The episodes feature store clerks Dante and Randal and their ongoing adventures among the shelves of your local corner store. Never far from the epicenter of these adventures are the irreverent Jay and Silent Bob. Whether it's getting trapped in the walk-in cooler, attending their high school reunion, or fighting rival Leonardo Leonardo (who wants to dominate the local Quick Mart market), Clerks spoofs TV and movies with mocking pop-culture jokes and cameos by a number of celebrities. Ultimately, though, Clerks: The Animated Series suffers at the hands of network censors, lacking the obnoxious punch that made Clerks the film so offbeat and amusing.

Smith doesn't disappoint, however, with the inclusion of a number of special features on the DVD set, most notably the ever-insightful director's commentary with guests Jason Mewes (Jay), Brian O'Halloran (Dante), and Jeff Anderson (Randal). So while the series itself may be ill-fated, featurette on the making of the animated series--including storyboards and information on character development and the comic book influence on the drawing style--make this a robust offering for Kevin Smith completists. --Adam Medros ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clerks Uncensored!
A spin off series of the movie, Clerks Uncensored only had two episodes shown on ABC in 2000. We get to watch Dante and Randal deal with more problems within 6 episodes. Cancelled by "the company" (as Kev calls 'em on the Uncensored commentaries) after two episodes. We get all six eps on this set! Seriously, Kevin Smith is a genius! Awesome show, too bad ABC cancelled it. Watch it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Could have been great
I watch these episodes and I know that this show would have been great had it been allowed to continue, just look at "Family Guy." This series is unique to that, in that it stays true to the film characters humor, while also magnifying the medium of animation and the restricted confines of network TV.The commentary tells an interesting tale of the life of the series even though it sometimes does so at the expense of scene specific. All in all, this release gives you just about all anyone could ask for considering this series.By the way, I'm waiting for the feature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clerks makes it's way to cartoon format
The cartoon adaptation of Smith's classic movie "Clerks", may have been short lived, but the six episodes we're left with are nothing less of classic. Follow Dante and Randal into even more obscure adventures than what takes place in the actual film. Be advised there are only six episodes. Only two were ever aired on television. As far as I know there will not be any more. That's not very fair since this cartoon is on par with all of the hit comedies out there like Family Guy, Futurama and The Simpsons. If you're a huge Kevin Smith or Jay and Silent Bob fan, then you should definitely consider picking this up and owning it. It's also got low price tag, so that's a plus (I mean it's only six episodes). Here's a quick run-down of the episodes :

    1) "Nothing Exciting Ever Happens" - Business at the Quick Stop is threatened when billionare Leonardo Leonardo opens a quicker stop. Dante and Randal have to stop it.

    2) "Trapped" - Dante and Randal get trapped in a freezer at the Quick Stop and remember old times together.

    3) "Discreeto Burriots" - Leonardo Leonardo gets a very bad stomach virus and the Quick stop is investigated for foul play.

    4) "Take The Case" - Jay trys to sue Dante and Randal.

    5) "Class Reunion" - Dante becomes the coach of Leonardo's little league team

    6) "The Fair Across the Street" - well isn't really about anything.

So like I said if you like Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks, Kevin Smith, or anything related to those three things, you need to buy this DVD set. It's very cheap and shows some very entertaining episodes of what would have been a great tv show, had it been given a better chance. Maybe one day it will come back, or may Smith will just release them through DVD. Who knows. All we can do is hope. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Martin Scorsese's 1990 masterpiece GoodFellas immortalizes the hilarious, horrifying life of actual gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), from his teen years on the streets of New York to his anonymous exile under the Witness Protection Program. The director's kinetic style is perfect for recounting Hill's ruthless rise to power in the 1950s as well as his drugged-out fall in the late 1970s; in fact, no one has ever rendered the mental dislocation of cocaine better than Scorsese. Scorsese uses period music perfectly, not just to summon a particular time but to set a precise mood. GoodFellas is at least as good as The Godfather without being in the least derivative of it. Joe Pesci's psycho improvisation of Mobster Tommy DeVito ignited Pesci as a star, Lorraine Bracco scores the performance of her life as the love of Hill's life, and every supporting role, from Paul Sorvino to Robert De Niro, is a miracle. ... Deserves an X rating for all of the gratuitous violence.Little to offer to a Christian-based viewer who ascribes to humanist values.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for sure, and that's a fact.
I'm not really into these "Mob Films", but GoodFellas was quite interesting, and it's not because it has a bunch of actors I like in it. Anyone that hasn't seen it already needs to see it. Even if you're not into mob movies, you'll still enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flip Over
Yes a classic gangster movie. What's the deal with the flip-over?Half the movie is on one side and the other half is on the other side. This would be a 5 star movie but it is stupid that half way into it you have to flip the disc to see the second half.Patton and The Godfather are 3 hours long all on one side of the disc.Very amatuerish. ... My roommate took this camera with her to Chicago. Many of the photos were not impressive, and some were flat out blurry. It was a dissapointment, and frustrating that four rolls of film were just not quite right. This camera will be added to the garage sale pile this summer.I'm looking for another point and shoot...

The camera in general is not bad and in fact affordable, very useful features, but quality of pictures is not too exciting. Works just fine. Pictures made at night are not good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun as a toy.....
I bought this film because I ran out of Tri-X in the middle of a trip and it was all I could find in B&W.On the plus side, it can be processed by your neighborhood 1-hour shop and it has pretty fine grain for 400 speed film.It also seems fairly forgiving of incorrect exposure.I have two problems with it: -firstly, it's just as expensive as Kodak's T-MAX 400CN film, a higher quality chromogenic (i.e. color-process) B&W film. -secondly, if you do any of your own processing and/or printing, this stuff is just as tricky and temperature-sensitive as color film, and the slightly reddish base color of the film wreaks havoc with contrast, especially if you use multi-contrast paper.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good film to get into B&W
I think the best use of this film is to get aquainted with the wonderful world of black and white. It's biggest feature, from the perspective of an beginner, is that you can drop it off at any old lab and they will do a good job processing it.Very few labs do an acceptable job with traditional (non-C-41 process) black and white film, but they are all set up for C-41.

For the person who does there own processing, this film has a few limitations.Being C-41, it is more difficult to process for the home darkroom, and you don't have the same level of contrast control as you have with "regular" Black and White films.Still, it is really fine grained.

Overall, this film is pretty low contrast, and thus records a good tonal range. It scratches very easily though, so be careful with your negatives.

4-0 out of 5 stars try this film
I use this film often for ease of processing and for convenience when purchasing B/W film. B/W film can be hard to find in a pinch. At least these are the two reasons that led me to try out this film. I love this film! I find it to have great contrast in most lighting situations without burning out the highlights or producing inpenetrable shadows. My photo lab developes the film C41 process (the same as color film), but I ask them to print it on B/W paper. The results are great! Printed on the regular color paper the lab uses does produce a "cast". Greenish, brownish, reddish, seems to depend on the lab (and the day!). You might not mind this. Try a roll and if you can get it printed on B/W paper, I bet you will be very pleased with the results. If your lab can't print on B/W paper, use the 4x6 prints as proofs. If you have a picture you really like, they can probably send it out for you to a lab that can make you a print on B/W paper. ... Read more

Carving out a niche in the heady early days of the British punk-rock scene wasn't easy. X-Ray Spex prevailed by creating one hell of a ruckus with guitar and sax providing the wall of noise and by focusing attention on irrepressible bandleader and vocalist Poly Styrene. Her songs dealt with teenage boredom and the absurdities of life in the modern world. Alas, Germ Free Adolescents is the only document this wildly unique and entertaining band left us to remember them by. But what a document it is. Included here are such minor classics as "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo" and "Warrior in Woolworths." --Mike Corrigan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Ten Punk Album
High pitched, screeching female vocals plus amateurish sax playing plus paranoid, anti-technology lyrics. On paper, it sounds like an absolute mess.In fact, it joins Singles Going Steady and the Undertones as one of the catchiest and most lovable punk albums ever.Every song is a little masterpiece, with a memorable hook and some truly zany lyrics. The pace is amazingly fast, but the title track, the one song that slows it down a bit, merits special mention. The dub reggae sound clearly influenced the Slits and Liliput and the lyrics are truly hilarious. The rest sounds like Debbie Harry and Clarence Clemons on massive doses of speed. Ear candy of the highest order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely and Prophetic
I picked up this album after reading an old British punk book ("Johnny Can't Read," or something like that), whose author stated that X-Ray Spex was the only true punk band. That's right, she said the Clash and Sex Pistols were poseurs (I think they're great), and that punk was quickly watered down and standardized... soon to become New Wave.High praise, and the Spex match it with timeless songs about living in a material world -- with sharp criticism, anger, and humor. If you've reached the financial point of middle class (or were born there), with shelter, food, and $ for entertainment/distraction, you know that soon nothing seems enough. The advertisers for corporate spread are always dangling the carrot of MORE.X-Ray Spex let you know that you're not alone in thinking it's all hype and garbage -- even though it seems unstoppable. And, of course, we're (I'm) all hooked on pop-culture and mass production to quite an extent.Polly Styrene holds it up to our face, makes us aware of our own air(waves), and makes it fun.The world IS turning day-glo... and every new movie ad and Regis/Oprah approved lifestyle is Art-I-FICIAL.

So you listen to X-Ray Spex. And you know it's not just you -- the advertised world IS all ART-I-FICIAL!1976's film Network says, "There are no nations, only corporations." Operation Artificial has gone global... so step from media saturation and listen to the prophetic X-Ray Spex... for some *real* (and fun) commentary. In short, X-Ray Spex help you see through the hype. And they have a cool saxaphone :-). ... Editorial Review

Based on Susanna Kaysen's acclaimed journal-memoir, Girl, Interrupted bears inevitable resemblance to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and pale comparison to that earlier classic is impossible to avoid. The mental institution settings of both films guarantee a certain degree of déjà vu and at least one Oscarwinner (in this case, Angelina Jolie), since playing a loony is any actor's dream gig. Unfortunately, director James Mangold seems to have misplaced the depth and delicacy of his underrated debut, Heavy, despite a great deal of earnest effort by everyone involved. It's easy to see why Winona Ryder chose to star in (and executive-produce) this nearly worthy adaptation of Kaysen's book, since it's a strong vehicle for female casting and potent drama. Mangold certainly got the former; whether he succeeded with the latter is not so clear.

To be sure, Ryder conveys the confusion and chaos that signified Kaysen's life during nearly 18 months of voluntary institutionalization beginning in 1967. But the film seems too eager to embrace the cliché that the"crazies" of the Claymoore women's ward are saner than the war-torn world outside, and lack of narrative focus gives way to semipredictable character study. Susanna (Ryder) is labeled with "borderline personality disorder," a diagnosisas ambiguous as her own emotions, and while Jolie chews the scenery as the resident bad-girl sociopath, Ryder effectively conveys an odyssey from vulnerable fear to self-awareness and, finally, to healing. The ensemble cast is uniformly superb, making this drama well worthwhile, even as it treads familiar territory. If it ultimately lacks dramatic impact, Girl, Interrupted makes it painfully clear that the boundaries of dysfunction are hazy in a world where everyone's crazy once in a while. --Jeff Shannon ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good ...
... for what I thought might be a cross between a chick flick and a "self-improvement" pop psychology book.Superior in all aspects to the overrated "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".Angelina Jolie deservedly won an Oscar for her convincing portrayal of a fascinating but ultimately hopeless psychopath.

1-0 out of 5 stars Everyone has their own little maggot in the brain
I was pretty exited to view this movie. Even though it was on a fuzzy vhs and Spanish dub. Well I can tell you it was a grand waste of time and considering this film deals with some of my best interests at heart, it was one of the most boring affairs I have ever had the displeasure of viewing. We start off with the character played by Winona Ryder. She apparently tried to kill her self with...aspirin. Yeah that's right, a whole bottle in fact! That caused me to loose all respect for her immediately. I mean what type of a retard over doses on aspirin for God sakes. A combination of Sleeping pills and tranquilizers would have been more efficient, with a stomach lining tablet first to prevent vomiting. Of course there's the popular paracetamol, but it normally gives you around two weeks to die, during which your skin turns yellow as your vital organs fail. Oh and the Looney bin. Well of course you have your run of the mill inhabitants e.g. the childish one, the fat one, the compulsive liar, the eating disorder and of course Angelina Jolie, our prize inmate. Of course its madness by numbers: The insane grin, hysterical laughing, the wacky hair etc. It's just so predictable.
Don't mention the fact that the majority of the clinically insane are quite shy meek mannered individuals. It is only when you get to really know them that their `weirdness' becomes apparent. I for one lived a whole year with a compulsive liar when I was 13. Told me she was dying of bone cancer. Went for a check up at the conveniently far away hospital every other week, or so she lead me to believe. Unfortunately it turned out she was a compulsive thief as well. Whoops just a little too late. Anyway back to the film. Why is Winona here with all these lunatics? Okay so she's depressed. Aww! Poor baby, aren't we all. Let's wallow in our self pity. I didn't get to university, boo hoo. I mean that's a lot worse then getting molested as a child or watching you mother kill herself in front of you. Like my best friend did. She's has bipolar depression and is a developing alcoholic but she struggles on. Oh and the whole cutting scene that some people have labelled disturbing. Hahahahahah! The trade mark shallow diagonal lines up the arm. Could serious self harmers be more insulted? Perhaps that's why I'm so angry at this film.Anyway, buy this if your looking for the obvious and the cliché. I guess I'm just sick of the constant stereotyping. Not a real look into to any of the mental problems presented here. Right! Time for my pills...

2-0 out of 5 stars "Based on a true story" but ultimately lies
If this movie wasn't claiming to be a true story, I might have given it 3 stars. I read the book, however, and it's obvious that they changed things. Sure, it makes a better movie, but if they're going to claim that it's a true story, they should have stuck with the truth.

The worst part, however, is the ending. It changes the entire point of the story. In the movie, the "good girl" who more or less goes along with the psychiatric program gets better and gets out.The "bad girl" who doesn't ends up pretty much exactly like the "bad girl" at the end of The Craft: crazed, screaming, and in 4-point restraints.

In the book, the true story, the "good girl" gets released and ends up, eh, okay. Not great, but getting by.Years later, she runs into the "bad girl" who also got released and ended up, eh, okay. Not great, but getting by.To change this ending is utterly inexcusable. It changes absolutely everything the author of the book was trying to tell about what institutions are really like and really accomplish. ...
