Little Women Director: Gillian Armstrong Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (25 June, 2002) list price: $9.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The flaws are easily forgiven in this beautiful version ofLouisa May Alcott's novel. A stirring look at life in New England duringthe Civil War, Little Women is a triumph for all involved. We follow one family asthey split into the world, ending up with the most independent, theoutspoken Jo (Winona Ryder). This time around, the dramatics andconclusions fall into place a little too well, instead of finding life'slittle accidents along the way. Everyone now looks a bit too cute and oh,so nice. As the matron, Marmee, Susan Sarandon kicks the film into amodern tone, creating a movie alive with a great feminine sprit. KirstenDunst (Interview with the Vampire) has another showy role. The youngensemble cast cannot be faulted, with Ryder beginning the movie in a roleakin to light comedy and crescendoing to a triumphant end worthy of anOscar. --Doug Thomas ... The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold by Average Customer Review: Hardcover (31 October, 2000) list price: $14.95 -- our price: $10.17 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Francesca Lia Block, whose Weetzie Bat novels have often beencalled pop fairy tales, here turns to the real thing for some very differentimaginings of Snow White, Thumbelina, Cinderella, Rose Red and Rose White, andother tales. Block's stories are more resonance than retelling, fevered dreamsbehind which the outlines of the traditional tales move fitfully like figuresglimpsed now and then through a summer fog. Veiled references to Block's own LosAngeles appear in the twisty house of the seven dwarfs built into a canyon likeLaurel or Topanga, the redwood forest on a seaside cliff through which Beautytravels to her Beast, the tree-darkened canyon houses with French doors thatopen onto exuberant neglected gardens lush with irises and roses. In theseevocations Bluebeard becomes an aging blue-haired producer, Sleeping Beautypricks her arm with a heroin needle, Red Riding Hood's wolf is a lecherousstepfather, and the Snow Queen is a sex goddess who lives in a marble mansionwith her boy toy, possibly in Beverly Hills. Sensuous images enrich theselanguid and darkly ironic visions: jasmine-scented night gardens, leopardcouches with velvet pillows, luscious food flavored with mint, coconut milk, orpomegranate sauce, cool candlelit baths. As always, Block's poetic allegories ofadolescence are strikingly original and a bit dangerous, a feast forconnoisseurs of YA fiction and savvy older teens. (Ages 14 and older) --PattyCampbell ... Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher's First Year by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 June, 2001) list price: $10.95 -- our price: $8.21 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Esmé Raji Codell has written a funny, hip diary filled with one-liners and unadorned thoughts that speak volumes about the raw, emotional life of a first-year teacher. Like Ally McBeal in the classroom, the miniskirted and idealistic Codell sometimes fantasizes her career is a musical. Her inner-city Chicago elementary school fades to black as the lunch lady strikes an arabesque or a struggling student performs the dance of the dying swan, all set to her interior soundtrack. (Tina Turner's "Funkier Than a Mosquita's Tweeter" echoes whenever her idea-stealing, dimwitted principal harangues her.) She's a rash, petite, white lady who roller-skates through the halls and insists that her fifth-graders call her "Madame Esmé." But it's not all fun and games: she introduces us to children who fling their desks and apologize in tears, and at one point, after reporting a disruptive student to her mother, who subsequently thrashes the young girl, she dry heaves into her classroom's trash can. Codell's 24-year-old voice is loud and clear ("Serious gross out," she writes after the scorned principal hugs her), though, on the principle that kids say the darnedest things, she often simply repeats their comments for comic effect. She's got sass, maybe too much self-confidence at times, and though there's no deep introspection in Educating Esmé, you'll be convinced her 10-year-old charges emerge the better for knowing her. --Jodi Mailander Farrell ... Lenore : Noogies by Average Customer Review: Paperback (11 July, 1999) list price: $11.95 -- our price: $10.16 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (34)
The good: The bad: The Lenore character is a great idea but the strips are some of the most boring tripe I've ever read - the sort of stuff doodled by bored, suicidal teenagers. Don't get me wrong - I was really looking forward to reading Lenore but there's actually little to read and the "jokes" are just unbelievably bland and unfunny. My advice is that "Roman Dirge" finds someone who can write decent stories for the characters because, as an artist, he shows a lot of promise but sucks big time as a writer. I give this product 2 stars (average) because I really like the art. If the quality of writing matched the art I'd give it a 4 or 5. Shame that it just isn't to be. As it is, the only people who will enjoy Lenore are those looking for exceedingly simple, childish comic strips of little substance or intellect. One more thing: People go on about Lenore being "dark". Well, it's not dark, it just tries hard to be funny in a sick way (and failing miserably). For a real dark comic book, check out Chester Brown's classic "Ed the Happy Clown" (or any other of his Yummy Fur stuff for that matter). Chester knows how to write and draw stories which are funny, dark, weird, disturbing and sad all at once. ... Read more Isbn: 0943151031 |

Clerks - The Animated Series Uncensored Director: Steve Loter, Chris Bailey Average Customer Review: DVD (05 August, 2003) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $13.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Writer-director Kevin Smith revives the characters of his indie classic film Clerks for this animated series created for network television. Though it aired for just two episodes on TV, the two-disc set has all six episodes plus a bevy of special features. The episodes feature store clerks Dante and Randal and their ongoing adventures among the shelves of your local corner store. Never far from the epicenter of these adventures are the irreverent Jay and Silent Bob. Whether it's getting trapped in the walk-in cooler, attending their high school reunion, or fighting rival Leonardo Leonardo (who wants to dominate the local Quick Mart market), Clerks spoofs TV and movies with mocking pop-culture jokes and cameos by a number of celebrities. Ultimately, though, Clerks: The Animated Series suffers at the hands of network censors, lacking the obnoxious punch that made Clerks the film so offbeat and amusing. Smith doesn't disappoint, however, with the inclusion of a number of special features on the DVD set, most notably the ever-insightful director's commentary with guests Jason Mewes (Jay), Brian O'Halloran (Dante), and Jeff Anderson (Randal). So while the series itself may be ill-fated, featurette on the making of the animated series--including storyboards and information on character development and the comic book influence on the drawing style--make this a robust offering for Kevin Smith completists. --Adam Medros ... GoodFellas Director: Martin Scorsese Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (02 September, 2003) list price: $6.93 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Martin Scorsese's 1990 masterpiece GoodFellas immortalizes the hilarious, horrifying life of actual gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), from his teen years on the streets of New York to his anonymous exile under the Witness Protection Program. The director's kinetic style is perfect for recounting Hill's ruthless rise to power in the 1950s as well as his drugged-out fall in the late 1970s; in fact, no one has ever rendered the mental dislocation of cocaine better than Scorsese. Scorsese uses period music perfectly, not just to summon a particular time but to set a precise mood. GoodFellas is at least as good as The Godfather without being in the least derivative of it. Joe Pesci's psycho improvisation of Mobster Tommy DeVito ignited Pesci as a star, Lorraine Bracco scores the performance of her life as the love of Hill's life, and every supporting role, from Paul Sorvino to Robert De Niro, is a miracle. ... For the person who does there own processing, this film has a few limitations.Being C-41, it is more difficult to process for the home darkroom, and you don't have the same level of contrast control as you have with "regular" Black and White films.Still, it is really fine grained. Overall, this film is pretty low contrast, and thus records a good tonal range. It scratches very easily though, so be careful with your negatives.

Germfree Adolescents Average Customer Review: Audio CD (05 June, 1992) list price: $15.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Carving out a niche in the heady early days of the British punk-rock scene wasn't easy. X-Ray Spex prevailed by creating one hell of a ruckus with guitar and sax providing the wall of noise and by focusing attention on irrepressible bandleader and vocalist Poly Styrene. Her songs dealt with teenage boredom and the absurdities of life in the modern world. Alas, Germ Free Adolescents is the only document this wildly unique and entertaining band left us to remember them by. But what a document it is. Included here are such minor classics as "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo" and "Warrior in Woolworths." --Mike Corrigan ... Read more Reviews (25)

Girl, Interrupted Director: James Mangold Average Customer Review: DVD (04 February, 2003) list price: $14.94 -- our price: $11.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Based on Susanna Kaysen's acclaimed journal-memoir, Girl, Interrupted bears inevitable resemblance to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and pale comparison to that earlier classic is impossible to avoid. The mental institution settings of both films guarantee a certain degree of déjà vu and at least one Oscarwinner (in this case, Angelina Jolie), since playing a loony is any actor's dream gig. Unfortunately, director James Mangold seems to have misplaced the depth and delicacy of his underrated debut, Heavy, despite a great deal of earnest effort by everyone involved. It's easy to see why Winona Ryder chose to star in (and executive-produce) this nearly worthy adaptation of Kaysen's book, since it's a strong vehicle for female casting and potent drama. Mangold certainly got the former; whether he succeeded with the latter is not so clear. To be sure, Ryder conveys the confusion and chaos that signified Kaysen's life during nearly 18 months of voluntary institutionalization beginning in 1967. But the film seems too eager to embrace the cliché that the"crazies" of the Claymoore women's ward are saner than the war-torn world outside, and lack of narrative focus gives way to semipredictable character study. Susanna (Ryder) is labeled with "borderline personality disorder," a diagnosisas ambiguous as her own emotions, and while Jolie chews the scenery as the resident bad-girl sociopath, Ryder effectively conveys an odyssey from vulnerable fear to self-awareness and, finally, to healing. The ensemble cast is uniformly superb, making this drama well worthwhile, even as it treads familiar territory. If it ultimately lacks dramatic impact, Girl, Interrupted makes it painfully clear that the boundaries of dysfunction are hazy in a world where everyone's crazy once in a while. --Jeff Shannon ...
