Ott-Lite L18336 Vision Saver Crane Lamp (18-Watt) Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $199.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Ott-Lite's VisionSaver Lamps are designed to bring the visual acuity of natural daylight to your desk or workspace, without glare (or installing a skylight), in an effort to minimize eyestrain and discomfort. While everyone can appreciate less reflective glare on computer screens, graphic designers will be especially grateful for this light's ability to make details and colors appear clearer, thanks its low heat and high contrast. With a double-jointed neck that can rotate to illuminate large areas, the crane lamp features counterbalancing tension springs and a weighted base for stability. The head swings horizontally and adjusts vertically for precise lighting. The lamp can be converted to a clamp-on model for those who need every last inch of desk space. The included 18-watt bulb is rated to last 10,000 hours, replacing up to a 100-watt incandescent for energy savings. ... Read more Features Reviews (3)
Most of the fixture was manufactured in Taiwan with the Ott-Lite flourescent lamp itself made in Thailand. The appearance of the fixture is satisfactory, but quality control is obviously a problem. Very flashy box! All in all, a disappointment. Better crane lamps can be had at less than half the price.

Bosch MUM 7400 700-Watt Kitchen Machine Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $1,599.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Bosch brand's reputation for excellence dates back to 1886, when Robert Bosch founded Robert Bosch GmbH as a precision-tool and engineering workshop in Stuttgart, Germany. Today, Bosch makes a wide variety of tools, kitchen appliances, and more. The company's MUM 7400 700-watt stand mixer/food machine helps out so much when cooking, it almost seems as if there's an extra sous chef in the kitchen. A small revolution in stand mixing, the motor is placed under the mixing bowl and is one of the most powerful you'll find among mixers of the same size, with a belt drive system that transmits torque better than many other models. The 12-by-14-by-10-1/4-inch (height by width by depth) mixer drives all accessories off a single mounting position and has four speed settings, plus a momentary pulse function, that install just the right amount of control as you go from fluffing egg whites to making bread. The 6-quart bowl is made of stainless steel, kneads up to 12 pounds of dough, and comes with an antisplash cover. All the surfaces of this kitchen machine are easy to clean, and it sports convenient cord storage and suction feet that add stability. A handy instruction booklet, beating and stirring whisks, a spatula, and the exclusive stainless-steel Bread Master dough hook are included (other attachments are available separately), and all accessories are dishwasher-safe. Adding to the cool multifunctional nature of this machine is the included blender that fits onto the same motor and has a 6-cup capacity and an unbreakable stainless-steel jug. When using the blender, the unit is 13-3/4 inches tall. A.J. Rathbun ... Read more Features Reviews (6)
If I hadn't paid a grand for it, I could just shrug it off, but in fact, for around the same money, one can purchase an upscale Kitchen Aid mixer, and a professional (built for bars and clubs) blender, and still walk away ahead. In fact, I own a 18 year old K5 Kitchen Aid...that still makes bread and whips better egg-whites than this unit ever did. My 5 year old industrial blender BTW, still makes morning smoothies with out breaking a sweat. Sure, the best thing about this unit is it's looks, but for actual cooking, save your money and get some real tools, now...to find the box and receipt, and hold my breath....

Espressione Luna Wall-Mount Pump Espresso Machine Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $699.99 -- our price: $499.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Espressione's Luna espresso machine is as much an elegant element of a room's design as a mere java brewer. It can be wall mounted or suspended on a metal support, saving space in the consumer or restaurant kitchen. Produced in Italy, the machine uses mineral water bottles, or other bottles, as the water reservoir, which eliminates the often-cumbersome water tank. All this stylish functionality doesn't mean that the Luna skimps on the espresso-making process. On the contrary, it makes excellent espresso and has a number of great features, including 15-bar pump pressure, a brass boiler with a .7-liter water capacity, a solid stainless-steel body, and a strong thermo block for instant and continuous steam, as well as a UL-rated, 1,450-watt heating element. There are two different systems for extracting espresso and for steaming milk, and a no-water supply protection system that shuts off the machine when the water reservoir is empty. One thing to remember when using the Luna: it only works with ESE coffee serving pods, which resemble a round tea bag and contain the proper amount of ground coffee--7 grams to be exact--to make a single serving of espresso. Luckily, Espressione also has coffee pods available in 100 percent Arabica, espresso, and decaffeinated styles. The 110-volt Luna has a cup warmer on top and measures 15-1/4 by 15-1/2 by 6-1/4 inches (length by height by width). --A.J. Rathbun ... Read more Features Reviews (12)
Cons: Steamer busted on me after 2 weeks of use. Have to take it in to be serviced now. As a side note, I would not recommend the espressione pods with this machine. (The "pour" is too quick.) There are better pods out there. I'm still investigating which brands are best or this machine.
I own this machine and have found it to be awesome. We've had some technical questions and the ESPRESSIONE people are fantastic. Recommend the GRACE PG with great confidence.

Nintendo GameCube Console - Jet Black with 3 Games Average Customer Review: Video Game list price: $399.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review To help you start your GameCube collection, we've created this special bundle, which includes the adventure game Luigi's Mansion, the football simulation Madden NFL 2002, and Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II, a space-combat game. This value pack also comes with an additional controller so you can challenge a friend, a memory card to save your progress through the games, and a six-month trial subscription to Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine to help you keep track of all the latest games. Though it looks like a toy, don't be fooled: the Nintendo GameCube is a powerful video game console that rightly deserves its place among the other next-generation game systems. In fact, its playful, appealing design and small size (the unit is a not-quite-cubed 6 inches) aren't the only features that set it apart from the others. For starters, Nintendo has quite clearly made this a game-only machine. It doesn't try to play your CD collection, run your movies, read your e-mail, or store your MP3 files. The company has concentrated its efforts on games. The prelaunch titles we've seen play uniformly smooth, with bright, fast graphics and great sound. Nintendo says its engineers have removed traditional "bottlenecks" that have, in the past, slowed down processing. New components designed by IBM and MoSys, as well as a large-capacity secondary memory cache, keep instructions moving through the system's microprocessor (MPU) at peak levels. In English: the GameCube is optimized to push speed up while pushing costs down, hence its position at the lower end of the price spectrum. The GameCube is the first Nintendo video game system to use a disc-based media rather than cartridges for its games. Moving the software to disc media generally means lower development costs for the publishers, which, in turn, trickles down to the consumer not only in price, but also in availability and quality, as it's then easier to try out untested game ideas (Pikmin, anyone?). While most other systems likewise have their games stored on discs, the GameCube's 3-inch format is smaller than everyone else's, and is so designed to fit in a shirt pocket as much as it is to deter would-be software pirates. Of course, the main advantage of the GameCube is that it's the home field of one of the world's premier game designers--Nintendo. While powerhouses Electronic Arts and Sega make games for all systems (including this one), you can only play Nintendo games on a Nintendo system. And Nintendo, you might recall, has been hitting them out of the park since it started with Donkey Kong. In fact, here's a roll call of characters and series you won't find on the other consoles: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Kirby, and, of course, Pokémon. A few names that the GameCube will share with the other guys: Madden, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Batman, and Star Wars. The system also comes with four built-in controller ports, so you can easily plug in extra controllers and let friends join in for the multiplayer games--it's even got a built-in handle so you can easily move it to a friend's house. It comes with two memory card slots for saving your progress through games, and there's the capacity for future expansion into the world of online gaming. In short, the GameCube isn't an all-in-one entertainment system, and neither is it the most powerful of the modern video game consoles. But for video game enthusiasts who want to stick with their favorite characters, its value cannot be beat. --Porter B. Hall Unit Specifications

Queer as Folk - The Complete First Season (Showtime) Average Customer Review: DVD (08 January, 2002) list price: $119.98 -- our price: $89.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review They're here, they're queer, and they make Sex and the City look like a demure tea party. Showtime's quintessentially American Queer As Folk--based on the British miniseries--pours on copious amounts of hot and steamy sex. This slick (and slickly entertaining) series shares the same basic concept as its British counterpart--centering on a group of gay friends living in a primarily industrial city--but after that, all bets are off. Whereas the British version focused on the gritty, realistic drama of its characters, the American QAF is a glossy, fun soap opera that occasionally tackles big issues but never lets you forget that life at times can be a party, and you shouldn't be one of those poor suckers starving to death. A good part of the show's charm lies in its cast--boy-next-door Michael (Hal Sparks), ruthlessly seductive rake Brian (Gale Harold), out-and-proud Emmett (Peter Paige), wallflower Ted (Scott Lowell), and nubile teen Justin (Randy Harrison)--who grew from standard gay prototypes to intriguing characters by the first season's end. And while some subplots didn't work (such as Emmett's farfetched foray into gay-conversion therapy), others were quietly affecting, including Brian's coping with his father's death. Some may object to the show's relentless fixation on sex (and gay men--there are just two lesbian characters), but this is a series that in its own polished way is both engrossingly fun and truly groundbreaking. It's liberating to watch an American TV series in which the straight world is only peripheral. Let's hear it for the boys! --Mark Englehart ... Read more Features Reviews (221)

Canon Optura 100MC MiniDV 1-Megapixal Digital Camcorder w/ Built-in Digital Still Mode & 8MB SD/ MMC Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $1,499.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The biggest knock on the Optura Pi was its lack of a high-resolution digital still mode. Sure, it took pictures, but with a resolution of only 640 x 480. With the Optura 100MC, Canon has addressed this issue by including a 1.3-megapixel still-shot mode, and created an outstanding product. Most of the features that made the original so compelling have returned, including the progressive scan CCD (perfect for recording and analyzing that golf swing), and optical image stabilization. The zoom lens is a beefy 10x, but using the digital zoom will push that number up to 200x. The LCD monitor is 2.5 inches, but the camcorder has taken a hearty step down in size itself, so those inches are well spent. The camcorder itself has joined the growing trend of vertically oriented design, making the Optura 100MC a true handheld model. As with all DV camcorders, the Optura 100MC includes an IEEE 1394 port to transfer video footage for editing or dubbing. Additionally, the new Optura includes S-video and composite input and output ports, making it possible to archive all your old analog footage in the pristine DV format. Also included in the kit are a battery, wireless remote, S-video cable, stereo video cable, and 8 MB MMC card. ... Read more Features Reviews (17)
I've had this digital camcorder for about 6 months now. Previously, I had purchased a JVC digital camcorder. That one jammed up about a year and a half after I bought it and wouldn't accept video tapes anymore (I just recently got it to work again but I'm not sure for how long.) I knew of the Canon line of digital camcorders and owned a Advantix Elph camera so I trusted the brand name and bought the Optura. I was pleasantly surprised. The camera takes great video, it could use a bit more light in dark situations so purchasing a light to mount on the top of the camera. I also purachased additional filters and lenses (wide angle and telescopic) but, to tell you the truth, nine times out of ten, I don't use them. As for taking pictures, the camera aspect is great at taking photos for storing on your computer or emailing, but the quality is just not good enough to print out, even at its higher quality level. The pixels can easily be seen and anyone would be able to tell it was a picture printed off your computer. I purchased a longer lasting battery with the camera, and I highly recommend you do as well, because the battery they give you with the camera will only last about an hour and a half before needing to be recharged. I purchased a 4 hour battery for about [$$$] or less and it works great because I can always charge one while using the other. In addition, a 128 MB card versus the card that comes with the camera would be a great purchase. The 128 card allows me to take up to 250 pictures at the higher quality level (I think abt 1 megapixel or so) before being filled up. All in all, a great video camera but if you want to take stills, I recommend getting a real digital camera. Even without the camera functionality, I would buy this model again in a heartbeat. I was able to take great video of the birth of my first child and many other memorable moments since I got it!
