Canon PowerShot A300 3.2MP Digital Camera with 5.1x Digital Zoom
    by Canon Cameras US
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics (15 April, 2003)
    list price: $299.99

    Editorial Review

The Canon PowerShot A300 offers the entry level solution to digital camera users new to the field. Packed with a host of features and a 3.2 mega pixel CCD sensor, this little camera produces great pictures.

Like Olympus digital cameras, the camera is turned on via a sliding lens protector at the front that forces the camera into life. Two AA batteries and the CompactFlash compartment are housed behind a sturdy door that will easy take a beating over the lifespan of the camera without snapping or falling apart. The other side the camera offers a DC and USB port, but unfortunately no video-out to watch your pictures on the TV.

On the rear of the camera, the user is offered a 1.5" TFT screen that is sharp and responsive to changing lights and focuses, as well as, a host of buttons - most of which are self explanatory and you can easily access flash modes, picture review and other options like this without having to plough through plenty of menus.

The camera offers a 33mm f3.6 fixed focal length lens with a 5.1 digital zoom option that offers the equivalent of a 33mm - 168mm lens in a 35mm camera. This combined with shutter speed range of 1-1/2000 sec and ISO ratings of 50 - 400 and a range of pre-programmed settings to cope with landscapes and portrait shooting makes for a nice little camera for beginners. For the more adventurous there is a macro mode up to 5cm, as well as, the option to record up to 3 minutes of movie clips with sound.

For an auto focus fixed lens camera with a digital zoom the quality is quite good. Detail is captured well and greens are differential when it comes to photographing landscapes. The digital zoom is useful for getting into the action, but should not be replied upon for crisp images. Overall as a starter's camera this is an okay place to start. If you are starting out and need a camera that will get you going, this is as good a place as any to start, just don't expect the world. --Jason Denwood, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A few words for fellow adventurers:
I have found this camera to be surprisingly resilient to the repeated abuse I have given it.It's not been left completely untarnished, but it still KIND OF works.

When I left it outside in the sand during a thunderstorm in the fair town of Dirt, Louisiana, it woke up in the morning QUITE gritty and the buttons were a little stubborn, but it still worked perfectly.Photos are of beautiful quality.

I've banged it around the Caribbean without a care in the world, and while it was always a bit too slow to take successive photos of Puerto Rican farmers getting into a bar fight, it held up quite well.

Real problems came after I dropped the poor thing into a hot spring in the Andes of Venezuela.Luckily, I was able to retrieve it, but it would never be the same again. The LCD is completely trashed and unusable and the flash is now nonexistent, but the durn thing still takes pictures!!I can't believe it, either. As long as I'm outside in the sun, photos and video turn out great and transfer effortlessly to my computer.

In short, this camera will take a lot of wear. It's a great camera to take on adventures (especially to places that don't have lithium batteries!), but go easy on the hot springs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!
I'm still wondering how could Canon create such a bad product. I was stupid enough for not read customer reviews before buying it.
The A300 will eat a pair of batteries (even those with more than 2000 mAh) every 10 to 20 minutes, if you're lucky and keep LCD and flash off. It will take a century to respond after you press the shot button and another century to process the picture.
I tried to contact Canon but I guess their customer support is just like their camera - it doesn't work!
    Do yourself a favor: don't buy a Cannon A300.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Camera!
This was a great first camera for me and I feel like I got WAY more than I paid for.3.2MP and high resolution allowed me to touch up in Photoshop and still allowed fantastic print quality.Video recorder has audio. There is no Optical Zoom, which is why I decided to get another camera after I felt like I've "graduated" from this one.Buy, Ni-MH rechargeable batteries. They last WAY longer and this way, you won't have to own your own battery company to like this camera.
Oh, and since Canon cameras all have digic chip processor and pretty much the same operating format, after you're done with this camera, you won't have any trouble when you upgrade to any of the fancier Canon models. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this case
Only 4 stars because I don't like Velcro and I'd like a little more padding.

I have an A75 and am very happy with this case.
I have the following different opinions from other reviewers.
The case offers just as much dirt protection as any SLR case I ever owned. Also if I dropped any of my old 35mm SLRs in their leather case with a hard lens cup, it would have caused just as much damage as with this case.(The camera weighs, what, an eighth as much?)
The scraped up "Canon PowerShot" name plate is evidence of the protection my stratch-less camera has received.

While the case has no strap, any Canon PowerShot camera does.People (including myself) often leave the strap in the box because they know they're going to look for a real case (and expect a strap there).Even on my 1974 Minolta SRT101 the strap is attached to the camera, not the case.Make sure you get the strap if you buy a used camera.

With the strap around my right hand, it's a quick rip of velcro and I'm in shooting position with my finger on the on/off button.
We like these little cameras because they're there when we need them.

4 batteries OR a flash card fit in the pocket.I use 1GB cards and find them hard to use up.However, the truth is that, in practice, I carry a spare card and wonder about my battery life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Price, Good Product
I just bought one of these for my Canon Powershot A95 and the thing is just perfect. It fits the camera like a glove, very snug so the camera doesn't bounce around, and there's a little pocket for an extra flash card as well. This case is VERY affordable, and it does exactly what it claims it does; it protects your camera. Now, this isn't a case designed for a professional photographer with plenty of room for spare batteries and other junk. It's also not waterproof, fire proof or accident proof. This is simply a nice comfy little case to use when on a quiet vacation or to carry your camera around from place to place while in your home town.Simple, cheap, and well-made.I recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Velcro doesn't last
It's a great case for the intended cameras, but with use the Velcro on the flap loses its grip. For the price it should be better. ... Read more

Note: The Canon i860 is no longer being manufactured. You may want to consider purchasing the newer Canon Pixma iP4000 instead.

The pigment-based black ink delivers exceptional clarity and legibility, whether you're printing a holiday newsletter or a detailed spreadsheet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, except for ink messages
THis printer rocks. As a PC consultant, I don't like HP PCs because of their software.I have seen them blow up numerous operating systems, plus HP installs software by the shovelful and gives the user no control over if they want it.
This printer has reasonable software, the image quality is awesome, really amazing. The photos compared to my HP 812C are just amazing.Printing on the 4x6 paper it is finally indistinguishable from a real photo.IT is a bit loud, but I slowed it down using the software driver which made a huge difference.(night mode they call it?).Individual ink cartridges will save lots of cash.

My ONLY complaint it that they warn you when the liquid ink is out, but there is still tons left soaked into the fibers in the resevoir.I printed over 100 pages after getting the first message about black ink - getting the dam pop up message every time.

2-0 out of 5 stars DON'T EXPECT QUALITY TEXT PRINTING
Apparently, this printer's forte is photo printing. I made the mistake of assuming it would print quality text documents too, which seems a much simpler task.I am very disappointed in the frequent ink smears, streaks, and blotches on the pages. It takes frequent cleaning procedures to minimize the streaks and blotches.I am incredulous that the ink smears when a highlighter pen is used on the text. This happens on pages with dry ink that were printed many months earlier!Highlighter pens seem to dissolve the dried ink.Periodically, during printing jobs, including the first page, the printer goes through some internal activity that can be frustrating when trying to print something quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars best printer you can get in this price range
I love to print off picturs I take with my digital camera. This one does them professionally and fast.I Love the separate ink cartriges also.I'm blown away with the features. You will love it so don't hesitate, if you need a printer that does photos this one is for you. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality but at a high price. 50+ cents per photo.
I bought this printer and 80 picture kit for my daughter, and she was very excited.
The easyshare printer is very easy to use, and the quality of the pictures is excellent. However, the price per picture is very high.My daughter did the math and told me she was getting her pictures developed at a local store from the smart card for 19c each. Using this 80 picture kit costs 50c a picture. The quality is better, but in our opinion..not that much better. Hopefully the price of these kits will drop so that it can compete better and make it worth while to use. Or maybe some other vendors will start marketing ink cartridge/paper refills for it at a cheaper price. If I had known my daughter was getting her pictures printed for 19c, I would not have bought this.

1-0 out of 5 stars INK CARTRIDGE RAN OUT HALF WAY THROUGH
I did not even finish my first package of paper before I was told to replace the ink cartridge. That is a GREAT DISSAPPOINTMENT because this unit prints wonderful pictures, and it's easy to use.I'm contacting KODAK for sure!

    Editorial Review

Some people make their living with a camera, and for these people the maturation of digital photo technology means a significant shift in their trade. The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers is for people who are already adept with a camera, and pretty much up to speed on the peculiarities of digital photography, too. The book teaches these people how to use Adobe Photoshop, the standard photo-editing software package. More accurately, the book explains how to use Photoshop for the kinds of work professional photographers do.

Case in point: The removal from photographs of what are politely called skin blemishes. Author Scott Kelby (the editor of Photoshop User offers two strategies: One you can use to remove all traces of a mark but which requires a fair amount of time, and another procedure that delivers "pretty good" results and which can be done on many pictures (such as a set of class portraits) rapidly. Kelby teaches by means of heavily illustrated procedures, each between five and 20 steps long and spanning several pages. A good way to use this book is by scanning the table of contents for a procedure that interests you (say, "Fixing Underexposed Photos," or "Pro Wrinkle Removal"). This will enable you to spot Photoshop techniques you hadn't considered. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use Adobe Photoshop if, for you, the program is one tool out of many in a photographic kit. Tricks teach you how to recolor hair, whiten teeth and eyes, modify unflattering body contours, dodge and burn, apply filters for effect, assemble panoramas, and do a score of other slick photo jobs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this useful tome!
I am SO pleased with this book. Scott Kelby shows you step-by-step methods for really improving your digital photos using Photoshop. I'm very experienced with Photoshop, yet being self-taught, I probably missed out on a few things. This book really helps fill in the holes. I refer to it all the time for little hints and tricks.

It's especially useful for portrait photographers. It goes through lots of different adjustments and tweaks that really make your photos pop.

I also like that it goes from soup to nuts. Everything from file management to displaying your shots on the web or to your clients. I do think you need a basic understanding of Photoshop, but this really does help expand your knowledge of the software as well as your overall photographic look.

    This is a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good supplement to my handle-book's collection
I don't believe in a kinda perfect book no matter what the last is about. When I hear from anybody that I have to buy some edition, just the only one and forget all the questions I had ever asked... well, thanks a lot there is outta my insight. It's too naive to take such a bait.
I can define myself like an advanced Photoshop user and have a strong confidence that if someone going to be familiar with PS, there is no way but to look for different methods to improve your skills. The "Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby is kind the method I have found really usefull for myself. Of course, content of some chapters was well known for me, but that hadn't grieved me because I had bought that book just for the rest chapters with all these tips I didn't know before. And it was worthwhile.
If you still hesitate between pros and cons just read the preface (in a form of conversation between author and Editor) and you'll figure out what you can obtain from this book and what is unidentified after you'll turn over the last page.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid introduction to basic, bad panorama coverage
This is a very solid and well written introduction to the basics, from managing photos to doing simple color correction and touchups. The book is in full color and the examples are of regular people and average pictures that present the problems we have all come to know, and wish to fix, underexposure, overexposure, too much shadow, too little contrast, etc.

Overall I like the book but there are some rough spots. In particular, the coverage of panoramas could be better. The author admonishes you not to pay for panorama software, which he overshoots on the price, and then lays out a complex set of steps that will result in an average panorama that will likely have perspective problems if you take the shots too close. In addition there was more that could have been said about the RAW format, which is critical to getting the most out of your camera.

Still, even with the downsides, this is a good book for digital photographers. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Mixed-media professionals such as photographers, Web designers, andgraphic designers will not be disappointed in Adobe's latest incarnation ofPhotoshop. In this release, Adobe aims hard at addressing the issues of filemanagement, easy photo retouching, and smarter output for the Web. While Adobemanages to successfully address these issues, it also remains true to its photoediting roots. New and improved features and tools such as a painting option andan enhanced brush palette allow Photoshop to build on its reputation as theleading tool for image manipulators. New-school designers of wirelessapplications will smile when they discover that Photoshop 7.0 offers support forWBMP-formatted graphics.

Photoshop 7.0's new file management system comes in the form of a WindowsExplorer-like file browser that allows users to easily sort and locate theirimages within various projects. Users can now organize projects by name, date, resolution, and a number of additional parameters.

The enhanced brush palette allows users to create custom brushes and save themas presets that can be accessed from the Tools options bar. Users can easilyvary different aspects of the brush by changing the hue, opacity, or flow of thebrushes for pastels, oils, and charcoal. Photoshop 7.0 also introduces a newHealing Brush and Patch Tool. With these tools, users can easily "heal" theirimages by removing scratches, blemishes, and other imperfections whilepreserving shading, lighting, and texture attributes.

Adobe has taken great strides in revamping Photoshop 7.0 to be more Web-readythan ever before. With the help of its companion software Image Ready, users cannow easily create rollovers and complex navigation bars by using the newRollovers palette. Additional Web-ready features include enhanced Web exportfunctions that allow designers to preview images designed for PDAs and mobilephones in the WBMP format. Users can easily create a slide show of their imagesand post online using the new Web Gallery. People concerned about posting theirimages online can secure their images with the new password protection featurebefore sharing them.

Adobe has finally introduced a long overdue spell checker with wickedmultilingual spell-checking capabilities. A new search and replace featureallows users to search and replace across different layers in the same document.

While Photoshop 7.0 introduces an impressive array of features that allowphotographers, Web designers, and graphic designers to work more effectivelywith Web and wireless devices, it also remains the leading tool for anyoneserious about digital imaging. No other software package provides users with theability to create such high-quality images. --Rich Ting ... Read more

With a 35mm equivalent range of 35 – 140mm, a large maximum aperture of f/2.0 – 3.0, and macro focusing down to 2 inches, there's virtually nothing this lens can't do. A 4x digital zoom feature extends the telephoto capabilities even further, effectively making it a 16x zoom.

The PowerShot G5 achieves sharp focus with both single and continuous focusing systems, perfect for any photography from sports to still life. With two types of AF, including FlexiZone, where the user defines the focus point anywhere in the composition, and a unique focus-bracketing feature, the PowerShot G5 can achieve perfect focus anywhere.

      Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash Type I or Type II cards in uncompressed RAW format or one of three compressed JPEG formats. The camera uses a USB 1.1 interface and also outputs NTSC or PAL video with monaural sound. It can connect directly to Canon Card Photo Printer and select BJ Printers.

      Movie Mode
It is possible to record video with mono sound in either 320x240 or 160x120 resolution. Total recording time varies depending on the size of the installed storage media, but individual clips may not exceed three minutes in length regardless of the available storage space.

      More Features
The G5's DIGIC Imaging Processor revolutionizes how you shoot digital by allowing the camera to process images faster and improving the accuracy of the autofocus. DIGIC also reduces the effects on noise in your images. The camera also incorporates Canon's iSAPS scene-recognition technology. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC Imaging Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

      Other features include:

      • Intelligent Orientation Sensor can tell whether you shot your photo vertically or horizontally
      • 12 EOS-based Shooting Modes, including two user-defined custom modes
      • The user controls every aspect of the shot, including aperture and shutter speed
      • Compatible with Canon Direct Printing technology
      • 1.8-inch TFT LCD

      Power and Size
The G5 uses an included rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that allows for up to 360 minutes of playback time or enough time to take approximately 450 pictures with the LCD turned on. The camera measures 4.76 x 2.91 x 2.75 inches and weighs 14.5 ounces without batteries or storage media installed.

      What's in the Box
The camera comes with a lens cap, neck strap, AV cable, remote control, and 32 MB CompactFlash card that can store approximately 32 compressed images. It also includes a BP-511 Li-ion rechargeable battery pack, an AC adapter, a USB interface cable, and two software CD-ROMs. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this if you have active children
This camera does a little of everything, video with sound as well as images. The pictures it takes can be fantastic. Unfortunately the subject has to be pretty still or in very good lighting to get a good shot. I took this camera to a soccer practice of a bunch of 10-year-olds in the daytime with heavy cloud cover and not a single photograph turned out. That included the few I used the built-in flash on (it couldn't focus). I also tried shooting some pictures at an indoor game that were disastrous because of the quick subjects (10-year-olds again) and low lighting.

Even during several outdoor games in bright sunlight it just couldn't hack it. I took several hundred photographs to get 30 or 40 worth keeping. Most of the time I was struggling with the camera trying to get it to focus and snap before the children ran away and out of focus.

I also took this camera to Hawaii for a vacation. It did much better when the subject stood still and smiled, but none of the evening sunset-shots turned out.

The camera also has a flaw in that the lens blocks out part of the viewfinder. This isn't much of an issue once you get used to using the LED to line up your shots.

On the plus side, this camera has a very long battery life and can use the Ultra II compact flash cards. The software was also very easy to use (be sure to read the instructions BEFORE loading it onto your computer, not during).

Overall, my recommendation is to spend a little extra for an SLR camera and leave this one alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Full Feature Camera, Some Issues
I have been really happy with the overall performance of this camera. I love being able to change how many pixels I want for my photos. I frequently will use the 5 pixel function so that I can later crop photos as necessary. Sometimes I wish that the camera were smaller. Also, we had to send the camera back to the manufacturer because the battery closure warped and the camera kept losing power. They fixed it quickly and for free.I was happy with the service.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great camera for daily needs
