    Editorial Review

The Nikon Coolpix 990 takes all the features of its popular predecessor, the Coolpix 950, and improves upon them. This 3.34-megapixel CCD offers true (noninterpolated) image resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 for easy cropping and high print quality. The built-in 3x zoom Nikkor lens provides 38-115mm coverage (35mm equivalent) for clear, sharp images with 4x stepless digital zoom. It also features a 1.8-inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD screen for easy composition and playback. Nikon's own 256-element matrix metering and white balance promise outstanding exposure and color balance in every image.

Fully automatic with manual capabilities, the Nikon Coolpix 990 provides 4,896-step multi-area autofocus for quick composition without interruption. It provides a built-in five-mode flash and seven capture modes, including 1.5 fps (frames per second) full-resolution image capture, 30 fps QVGA, and 15 fps QVGA movies for 40 seconds in motion-JPEG mode. The 50-step manual focus gives complete creative control, while the macro focus mode allows you to shoot pictures from as close as 0.8 inches. You may choose between shutter priority and aperture priority exposure modes for greater artistic flexibility without added hassle. This camera also accepts all optional Coolpix lenses and accessories, including fisheye, wide angle, and telephoto lenses and up to five Nikon speedlights (with optional bracket) to light up any scene.

Convenience features of the Nikon Coolpix 990 include its easy-to-use and easy-to-upgrade CompactFlash memory (16 MB card provided). This camera is capable of both NTSC and PAL video playback, and it works with both Macintosh and IBM platforms. Although the Nikon Coolpix 990 can connect to your PC via serial connection, it also offers high-speed USB connectivity for plug-and-play simplicity and faster picture downloads. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I've had mine for 3 years and it's just what I wanted for what I use it for. If anyone wants a great camera to use for just about any task or just fun? Buy it. Buy it now!

1-0 out of 5 stars Old and tired
This product, if still available, isn't a great camera. Look up the canon G2 or G3 or a newer Olympus model.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than average, but not stellar.
I picked up this camera used to do some assignment work for an online publication.I specifically wanted full manual control and the ability to use an external flash (the internal flash is almost useless).

The large handgrip is a welcomed change from most other digicams out there. It feels nice and solid in your hand while the no-slip surface does its job admirably. The shutter release button is solid and the mode jog dial is placed perfectly. The user interface could benefit from minor usability improvements, but for the most part is easy to use and learn in seconds without consulting the manual. And to echo what everyone else mentions, battery life lasts me about 40 shots with the monitor and flash turned off.I take along a spare set of AA batteries for short outings. For longer outings, I mount a DigiPower DPS9000 external battery pack into the tripod mount

Overall picture quality is good, but not to the level of my 35mm film cameras under moderate scrutiny. For web content, picture quality is awesome, though.Resolution and sharpness are perfectly acceptable for 4x6 prints.Nice to have the 3:2 ratio to let you print uncropped 4x6 images.Macro capabilities are great.

Since I prefer to print my personal images, I feel the Coolpix's weakness is in its color reproduction.Photos printed on a Fuji Frontier 370 system seem to lack a certain saturation or 'punch' in various colors - things seem to be on the dull or compressed side and not very vibrant, even if the original scene was. This is especially noticeable when you hold a digital print next to a film print when both have used the same exposure and focal length and have been printed on the same machine.

Sure, I can spend time in PhotoShop adjusting curves and levels, but that's more time consuming than it's worth if you ask me. For a few photos, no big deal. But if I just shot 50+ images that are keepers, I'm not going to spend countless hours tweaking each one.

I found that a semi-decent shortcut is to get the ICC profile for my target printer and batch up all the images in PhotoShop to have the profile applied automatically.I then spend $0.29/print at my local camera shop getting them printed.Inexpensive, fast, sharp, and durable -there's no way I can print at home at that price or time savings, and I doubt anyone else can.

    PROS:
Sharp images (provided you keep the sharpness setting on Auto)
    Easy user interface
    Inexpensive on the used market
    Decent build quality

    CONS:
    Condensed color range
Slow to focus and fire shutter (2-3 sec.)
    Supplied software is almost useless
Viewfinder shows too little of actual image (85%?) ... Read more

Its all-glass f/2.8 3x zoom with continuous 2.5x digital zoom brings you up to 7.5 times closer to the action. You have the choice of using either the traditionally styled real-image viewfinder or a 1.8-inch color TFT LCD monitor to frame your shots. The LCD is also handy for playback.Other technical features include a built-in 6-mode intelligent flash, a self-timer with remote, and a time/date imprinting function.

Using removable SmartMedia cards for its storage system, this camera offers 15 different image-resolution capture modes--including five uncompressed TIFF modes and up to 191 seconds of QuickTime movie capture with sound. Built-in USB connection and serial connection allow users downloading flexibility. The Olympus C-3030 is compatible with both Macintosh and PC platforms. It is the only camera in its class with a 32MB SDRAM buffer for rapid shooting at 3.3 frame-per-second burst mode up to 5 photos, and real-time shooting at 1 photo every second.

In response to one of digital camera users' chief complaints about previous models' power consumption, Olympus has designed the C-3030 zoom with improved battery life. While it will operate on 4 AA alkaline batteries for convenience, it lasts longer with the use of the CR-3V (LB-01) lithium batteries. It can also operate on an optional AC adapter.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Great camera...but
I love everything about this camera except I must say to use a tripod. This camera is just awful if you have a shaky hand. You can't take any "real time" shots.

4-0 out of 5 stars What gives it a star less?
First, the bad things. Too much noise shooting under low light conditions. Also in low light conditions you'll find some green and white little points of light on the image.
The camera has an almost useless flash.
The good things: Video option is very useful. Output to see pictures and clips in TV's. Also you can use it if you want a larger view than the LCD display, just plug it to your TV, VCR etc. Great resolution for high quality printing.
If you have some experience in photography you'll find great all the manual options.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to use, good quality
I spent a lot of time researching digital cameras on the internet and found this one to be a good value. It's fairly compact, and it's lived up to its reputation. The Camedia software makes downloading the photos pretty easy. I just leave the cable hooked up to my computer and attach the camera when I need to download. No need for docking stations. As a digital camera neophite, I'm pleased with my purchase. I leave the 35mm camera at home now. ... Read more

Casio QV3000EX 3.34-Megapixel Digital Camera with 340 MB MicroDrive
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $799.99

    Editorial Review

The Casio QV-3000 Plus digital camera is a 3.34-megapixel camera that offers still photos at 2,048 x 1,536 maximum resolution as well as 320 x 240 pixel movie-mode capabilities. It provides a 3x optical and 2x digital zoom lens, a 1.8-inch HAST LCD screen, and a cursor pad for user-friendly menu selection. Other features include auto or manual focus, autoexposure, auto white balance, a built-in quartz digital clock, an automatic four-mode flash with red-eye reduction, and nine special shooting modes.

While all these features are fairly standard with similar high-end megapixel cameras from other manufacturers, what sets the Casio QV-3000 Plus apart from its peers is its memory storage capabilities. This camera offers CompactFlash card capability much like other digital imaging devices, but also supports IBM's Microdrive--the most powerful method of storing digital images to date. The Microdrive, which is included with the camera, offers an incredible 340 MB of memory. Users can snap up to 400 high-quality images or 19 minutes of 7-frame-per-second video without having to switch memory cards or download. One IBM Microdrive could replace over 11 rolls of film. This storage capacity makes it easy to use the QV-3000 Plus in situations where you'll be away from your computer for an extended time (such as while you're on vacation).

The Casio QV-3000 Plus is USB compatible (although you don't need a USB port to use it) and works with both PC and Macintosh platforms. It operates on either four AA batteries or on an optional AC adapter. Along with the Casio QV-3000 Plus, you receive a USB cable, a serial cable, a Macintosh serial adapter cable, a software bundle, a 340 MB IBM Microdrive, a video cable, a soft carrying case, and a strap. The included software bundle enables you to instantly upload your photos to the Internet, to convert files into e-mail form, and to edit your photos with ease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera.
This camera easy to use, has great quality pictures with 3.34 MP. Long battery live.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Camera
I've had my Casio for just over 2 years. It is extremely easy to use and with the hard drive, I mindlessly shoot shots at the highest resolution (2048x1536)knowing that storage is no issue.Having the HD has changed the way I shoot photos since with "no storage issues" I take multiple photos per topic and decide later on my computer which ones I'll use and delete the rest. Accessing photos with the USB port is as simple as plugging in the USB cable and double clicking the "drive E:" icon that appears in My Computer.Although the Casio software is ok it is not as effective as some of the commercial software that is available. After trying a few packages I've settled in on using Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and Irfanview (which is free) to edit my photos.I've printed 8x10 photos on my Epson ink jet printer with Photo paper and the results are superb. A high resolution, poster size photos can be printed.Since day one, I've been using Kodak rechargeable Ni-MH batteries and battery life has not been an issue at all. The 3x optical zoom I use extensively and I've never used the digital zoom.An excellent camera that I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars this camera is a workhorse
We have used this camera on several three week or longer trips, carrying extra rechargable batteries and using a bigger storage chip.We get up to 1,000 photos, sometimes things get a little slow after 800, who cares!

Weddings, camping, Grand Canyon, Penobscot River: the camera is flexible from macro flower shots to large vistas.

Easy to use, easy to remove unwanted photos, EASY EASY EASY to upload.

    like the view library.

Plan to buy one more so we don't have to share, have bought one for daughter, now thinking about one for son for Christmas.Online pricing today...

Canon PowerShot S100 2MP Digital ELPH Camera Kit w/ 2x Optical Zoom

    Editorial Review

Canon's latest crowning achievement, the PowerShot S100, packs a high-quality digital camera into the tiny, elegant body of Canon's Digital Elph series. With this item, Canon becomes the first to produce such a small digital camera with high resolution. The super-popular Elph APS cameras were favored because users could slip them into shirt pockets and take them anywhere. Now the digital camera has truly come of age with this ultraportable model.

The PowerShot S100 uses the same durable stainless-steel case as the traditional Elph series cameras. It offers 2-megapixel resolution for high-quality photos and prints up to 8 by 10 inches. Canon provides the PowerShot S100 with a high-resolution, low-distortion, all-glass aspherical 2x zoom lens (and a 4x digital zoom as well). The 1.5-inch LCD monitor displays most camera settings with easy-to-understand icons and minimal text. The PowerShot S100 features a 0.37-inch CCD that creates full color or black-and-white images up to 1,600 x 1,200 pixels (it also offers a 640 x 480 pixel image size). The built-in flash uses a light guide and does not need a fresnel lens or a large reflector, making the camera even more compact.

The PowerShot S100 stores images on an 8 MB CompactFlash card. Adobe PhotoDeluxe and PhotoStitch control image management, editing, compositing, and printing, while ZoomBrowser EX or ImageBrowser produce self-running screen slide shows, automatic e-mail preparation, and auto layout. The camera uses a high-speed plug-and-play USB interface, plus it has NTSC-out so you can view your photos on your TV. It's fully compatible with both Mac and PC platforms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Digital Camera that thinks it's a tank!
I bought this camera when i was a sophmore in college. And now, 2 years out of college, a handfull of beautiful days, a half-dozen life changing moments, and umpteen vacations later it's still goes with me everywhere and snaps photographs.all the sticker labels on it have since been knocked off but it doesn't matter because i know what they all do.This puppy is built to last. When I eventually pass this one down in the family and buy a new one, I'll be getting another canon for sure.

If you're looking for a high-value digital camera that thinks it's a tank, get the Canon s100.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better *compact* cameras for beginners
I bought this camera for the same reason many of you are considering it, or have already bought it--it's size.It is amazingly small, it's hard to believe all that has been packed into this camera.I take it with me everywhere, literally, it is so small that I am able to keep it in my pocket, and I don't have to fear that it will get ruined in my pocket because it is so durable. There is also a small covering for the lens, so you need not worry that the lens will get scratched.
The picture quality surprised me, when I first saw this camera I saw how small it was an instantly assumed that the picture quality would not be good--but I was wrong! The picture quality of this camera is outstanding (taking its' size and price into consideration).

However, I do have a few things to complain about...

First off, the battery. This camera uses a lithium battery, I find lithium batteries to be highly inconvenient; because what if you are on vacation, where the nearest place to buy batteries is just a gas station--there is no way that you are going to find lithium batteries there. Not only is it inconvenient, but also the battery life span is short. The longest I've had it work was about 1 hour and 45 minutes. This isn't uncommon in cameras, though, just as long as you bring your charger and spare batteries, you should be fine.

Another problem I had with this camera was the zoom function.Such a small zoom length that you would think that the zoom would be silent since it hardly zooms in...wrong!Very wrong. The zoom function on this camera is so loud that sometimes you will be unable to use it if you find yourself in a situation where you must be quiet.Even just turning the camera on will move the lens a little, resulting in a noisy start-up.

The flash is very weak.Really dissapointing. If you are inside, you can't be any farther away then 10 feet in a lit room.

The last problem I found with this camera was the macro function. The auto-focus on the camera seems to have trouble focusing on the subject. To make matters work, there is no manual override to overcome this problem. The focus is great, though, if you are not taking a macro shot.

These are all the flaws I found in the camera, it's not my first choice in cameras, I have come across many other beginner cameras that I prefer over this camera, but the thing you have to keep in mind about this camera is the size.If you are just looking for something to keep with you at all times, then this is a great camera choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very handy second camera
I've had this camera for three years.I bought it new, when it was cutting edge and very expensive.I put a 128MB CF card in it.

First, I have to say that I have NEVER had the slightest problem with this camera or the software.I've probably taken upwards of 5000 pictures with it, it's been all over the country. The software has been installed on Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP and I haven't had any problems with it.The camera is solid, performs well, takes good pictures, and the battery lasts pretty long if you disable the LCD viewfinder. If battery life were that big a deal, one could purchase a second battery and rotate.

All that said, I am a little disappointed with the quality of the pictures from the camera. They are razor sharp, the color balance is perfect, and the focus is great. When taking pictures of people, however, it shows EVERY flaw in the subject's skin.Scratches, oil, freckles are magnified and come out looking horrific. It requires extensive Photoshopping to fix the flaws.Other cameras taking pics of the same subjects turn out looking much better.I'm going to buy another camera to take baby pictures, but I'll keep this as a travel camera. ... The Epson PhotoPC 3000Z provides you with all the tools you need tocreate memorable, lasting images. Picture quality is superb--with Epson'sproprietary HyPict interpolation/compression scheme, the camera's alreadyimpressive 2,048 x 1,536 (3.3-megapixel) resolution is bumped up to 2,544 x1,904 (4.8 megapixels). The 3000Z can store images in uncompressed TIFF format, and features three levels of JPEG compression. The 3x optical zoom takes youright into the action, helping you to capture great close-ups.

The camera hasshooting modes for a wide variety of situations. Macro mode allows extremeclose-up photography, from 2.4 to 20 inches. The continuous shooting modeenables you to take pictures at 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 frames per second for 41, 7,and 3 consecutive shots (depending upon image quality). In interval shootingmode, the camera wakes to take shots at a user-specified interval between 10seconds and 24 hours and then goes back to sleep. The 3000Z also offers a moviemode, which records up to 25 seconds of 15 fps 320 x 240 video as a QuickTimemovie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn it and love it!
What a great camera!Printing 5x7s and 8X10s on an Epson stylus has been awesome! The biggest challenge here has been finding the right photo paper. The 10 second sound bytes make for a fun slide show with either live or dubbed in sound. The auto settings take excellent photos with a steady hand (like with most cameras). The flash even takes excellent photos at night,as long as the subject is close enough. Its easy to hold and focus's nice with a slight depression followed by the snap shot.I use the sports mode a lot.The indoor sports shots always turn out great, but would recommend the 2X telephoto lense for awesome shots. I store my photos on a disc and print out maybe 10 out of 36 for display or photo albums.the USB port for iMac with the Image expert program is easy to use with the 3000Z.Winter photos seem to get more red eye, which can always be dealt with.

5-0 out of 5 stars A camera to grow with
I have about a years worth of use out of my PC 3000Z.No problems and the pictures are fantastic! This camera will do much more than the mortal photo shooter.I print a lot of 8x10 pictures and you would NOT know the differance from mine and the local photo lab.

4-0 out of 5 stars Epson Photo PC 3000Z Digital Camera
Having moved up from the 750Z, which I dragged around the world and aged to failure in a year (OK for the way I handle cameras), the 3000Z was a big step up in terms of resolution (that's all the editors want). The camera fits nicely in the hand, and the controls are better located than the 750Z. The programming screens are handy, and the branching decisions for setting variables is easier to follow than the picture icons of the 750Z. The flashcard slot is way better designed. And now you can add 49mm lens features like a UV filter.

Complaints? The carry bag is useless. The USB connecting port is awful .. a rubber flap. I really miss the sun-flap to view the video screen in bright sunlight. Without it, it's impossible to use on brilliant days .. the screen becomes a mirror. Perhaps the biggest complaint is that Epson hasn't increased the start-up speed: the camera seems to take forever to set up for the first photo. I've missed so many shots by having to wait that critical 4-5 seconds before the green LED flashes "ready". And when taking pics, the time to take a shot varies from fractions of a second to several seconds (when the subject has long gone).

Overall, still my favorite digital camera. Awesome color reproduction and density. Light, small, fits the hand. Just, please, make it faster. ... Read more

Fujifilm FinePix 40i 2.4MP Digital Camera /MP3 Player, Silver
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $499.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Fuji's FinePix 40i is in a category of its own. Though several manufacturers are producing combination digital camera/MP3 players, all of the other cameras are extremely basic entry-level point-and-shoot models. In contrast, the Fuji 40i is a quality camera that would be worthy of praise even if it didn't feature an integrated MP3 player. Instead of thinking of it as a combination digital camera and MP3 player, it's more accurate to call the 40i a supercompact high-resolution digital camera that also happens to play MP3 files.

With the exception of the lens, the 40i is very similar to Fuji's other SuperCCD cameras (the FinePix 4700 and 4900, for example). Images are captured on a 2.4-megapixel SuperCCD sensor, which features octagonal pixels arrayed diagonally instead of traditional square pixels in a grid. Fuji claims that this system offers improved sensitivity and image detail over a standard CCD. To prove this point, the camera interpolates its 2.4-megapixel images up to 4.3 megapixels at the highest-quality setting. Independent tests typically place these interpolated images on a par with pictures from a 3.3-megapixel camera.

Featuring a brushed metal case with integrated sliding lens cap, the camera feels well made and sturdy. Its overall dimensions of 3.4 by 2.8 by 1.1 inches make it one of the smallest digital cameras on the market.

Our biggest disappointment with the camera is its lens. Virtually all digital cameras of this resolution and price feature zoom lenses; to cut back on size, weight, and price, Fuji has included only a nonzoom lens. The camera does feature a digital zoom, but this merely crops pixels from the edges of your photo and enlarges the remaining pixels, something you could do just as easily at home after transferring the images to your computer. If you're accustomed to having a zoom lens, you're likely to miss this feature. Otherwise, the 40i has all of the bells and whistles you'd expect in a quality point-and-shoot camera: multimode flash and white balance, self-timer, exposure compensation, macro, movie mode, and more. Some advanced camera features are missing--there's no shutter priority or aperture priority mode and no manual focus, but these features are often missing from all but the highest-end digital cameras.

As an MP3 player, the 40i is perfectly adequate, with good sound quality. You can't take pictures and listen to MP3 files simultaneously, and the included 16 MB SmartMedia card holds only around 15 minutes of music. If you're serious about using the camera as an MP3 player, you'll definitely want to invest in a larger memory card. A pair of AA batteries should power the player for nearly three hours.

To keep the record companies happy, Fuji has included a number of features designed to discourage users from sharing their memory cards. To transfer music to the camera, you'll need to use the included software, included USB cable, and the newer "ID" variety of SmartMedia card (look for an "ID" printed next to the card's capacity). Non-ID cards won't work for music, and you can't play cards recorded on another 40i, a Rio, or a card reader/writer. Like many personal audio products, the Fuji includes a wired remote that lets you control most music functions even when the camera is in a pocket, backpack, or briefcase. As a bonus, the remote also works with the camera, operating both the digital zoom and the shutter release.

If you're a gadget lover who always needs to have the coolest gizmos, the Fuji FinePix 40i is a great choice. Its combination of supercompact, high-quality digital camera and MP3 player is hard to beat.

    Pros:

    • Superbly detailed images from an ultracompact camera
    • Durable, brushed-metal case with integrated lens cap
    • Wired remote controls both MP3 and camera functions
    • High-capacity batteries and charger included

    Cons:

    • No zoom lens
    • Copy protection scheme adds complexity to MP3 download process
    • Included 16 MB memory card too small for serious MP3 use

4-0 out of 5 stars missing batterys
were not included in package received as specified on web site ?

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but probably not worth the money.
An excellent camera with a few major faults:
The obvious one - theres no optical zoom.If you look through the viewfinder, and your subject is only taking up a tiny fraction of the display, YOU're the one that's going to have to physically move yourself closer to the subject. The camera cannot do the zooming-in for you.
And secondly, the shutter speed is far too slow.Trust me, you cannot take photos of, say, people dancing. All you'll get is a blur.
Oh, and why Fuji neglected to include the AC Adapter as part of the package is beyond me.Supplying two rechargeable batteries, which take about 13 hours to charge simply isn't on...

That aside, it is a good little camera.TV-Out is more of a gimmic than something you'll use regularly, as the pictures look very fuzzy, even on a decent TV.And it's very very easy to use, and produces very good photos.

But personally, I'd think twice about going for this camera over, say, the Canon Ixus V.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Simple Camera
This is really a simple straight forward tiny digital camera. If you want a huge number of features and a lot of settings this isn't a camera for you.
On the other hand if you want a camera you can take anywhere and tuck in your pocket, you'll never miss a shot with this tiny camera.
It's menus are easy to use, but note that the screen on the back is a bit tiny. No hunting for the flash feature as on many other cameras. It's right on the top so you can flip between Off, Auto FillFlash and Red Eye Reduction.
Great snapshot camera for the pro or as a primary camera for the family photographer who doesn't want to lug around a larger camera. ... Read more

    Olympus E-10 4MP DigitalCamera w/ 4x Optical Zoom

    Editorial Review

The Olympus Camedia E-10 is a near-professional quality four-megapixel single-lens-reflex (SLR) digital camera with a number of unique features. First and foremost, the E-10 features an exceptionally high-quality 4x optical zoom lens with a focal length equivalent to a 35-140mm lens on a 35mm camera, and has a aperture of f2.0-f2.4 to f11.0, depending on how much zoom is used. Unlike many of the digital SLRs on the market, however, the lens is not removable. Olympus works around this by offering an extended set of lens additions that convert the lens from a wide-angle wonder to the equivalent of a 420mm super-zoom. Additionally, while the E-10 is an SLR camera, the LCD monitor also features live preview. Most SLR cameras utilize a mirror to supply the optical viewfinder with its image. Because of this, on most digital SLRs, the LCD monitor does not provide a live preview of the scenes you are trying to capture. The E-10 uses a beam-splitter--basically a prism--that allows the image to speed its way to both the optical viewfinder and the LCD monitor. The LCD monitor also sits on a hinge, letting you tilt it up 90 degrees, or down 20 degrees, allowing you to take pictures from unusual camera angles while still accurately framing the scene.

Unlike most other digital cameras, the E-10 uses both SmartMedia and CompactFlash (Type I & II) for storage. Also unlike many other cameras, the resolution of your image can be selected from 2240 x 1680, 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960, 1024 x 768, or 640 x 480 pixels, an unusually large selection. A histogram function lets you view exposure information after you capture an image, giving you instant feedback about how to improve your picture-taking skills. A 32 MB internal buffer allows the E-10 to take up to take up to four shots in sequence at three frames per second, even when set to record images as uncompressed TIFFs.

The shooting options on the E-10 include all of the typical modes you'd expect to see on a high-end consumer digital camera: program, aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual shooting modes. Other user-controlled settings include exposure compensation, metering mode, ISO setting, flash, white balance, and focus. Users can leave white balance on auto, select from a number of Kelvin temperatures, or manually create a preset. The built-in flash features red-eye reduction, auto, fill-in, and off modes. External flashes can connect to the E-10 through the hot shoe on top of the camera. Exposure compensation can be set from -3 to +3 EV in one-third EV increments. The ISO can be set to 80, 160, or 320. Also, an autobracketing feature takes three pictures, one over-exposed and one under-exposed, and allows you to set the exposure compensation up to one EV step in either direction, in one-third EV step increments. The E-10 uses four AA or two CR-V3 batteries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Digital Camera
I have used the Olympus E-10 continually since 2001. I had owned three previous digital cameras by Olympus but the E-10 was the first model that completely satisfied me. I take photographs for business (technical publishing) and pleasure and mostly use my images in digital form, although I have made satisfying prints up to 16 x 20 inches. I find this camera easy and enjoyable to use and the image quality exceptional. Although newer Olympus high end models have more megapixels and interchangeable lenses, I have not envied them enough to upgrade.

Like all high end digital cameras, the E-10 has a host of features that can be a little intimidating to learn. I felt the E-10 was worthy of the effort and I was inspired to design a publication to help other amateurs master the use of this camera. My E-10s are a continual source of enjoyment and I hope others will make the effort to master its use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the newest - but solid value at a bargin price
I bought my refurbished E-10 online from Olympus. It has functioned perfectly. The cost was 1/3 of the price they charged when the E-10 was first introduced.Since then, the price has continued to decrease as the competition has added megapixels and professionals have moved to DSLR bodies. This makes the E-10 a bargin for the weekend photographer. The camera is built like a brick - but a wonderfully ergonomic brick! The optics are fast and sharp and Olympus are famous for their image quality - even if it is "only" 4MP.The camera is supported by a full range of accessories readily available on Amazon (or eBay) including wide angle and telephoto supplementary lens, cable release, flash, etc. A total system will cost less than the body of a new DSLR.More important, this is (well was) a professional camera, built for professionals with an imposing presence and total control over the image. If you think you need those extra pixels ask how many 8 x 10 enlargements you made last year.If the answer is less than 10 then this could be the perfect digital camera for you - and at a realistic price.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
this is the only slr DIGITAL camera, I've had a slr film camera for a few years and could never go back to a point and click camera ever, and i bought a few digital camera before this one but they weren's slr style and the pictures never impressed me at all, basically i dont have much to compare this camera to digital slr wise, but i am VERY happy with the image quality and everything else about the camera ... 3-0 out of 5 stars WHAT do you EXPECT??
I bought one of these when they first came out almost two years ago - bought it strictly for auction sale pics.I have dropped it several times, it still works.I added an extra 28 MB memory card, and it made a world of difference in the capacity, BUT it totally messed up the LCD screen - my USB connection is loose, so I have to jiggle it sometimes to get it to work - BUT!!!I have been less than nice to it, and it has been great to me for what I paid for it.Close ups are non exisitant (meaning don't even try) flash pictures are always washed out.I believe there is no longer a web site for the company - check that out too. You DO NOT need ANY extra software to download or alter the pics - Jam Cam includes that with the Cam.I WOULD recommend this (with a 28 MB memory card) for a younger person just learning photography, or someone like me that 2 years ago could not afford anything else!!!
